Which HEavy Tank to buy…
Published on 12 November 2012 - 10:33:09

If you were to get only one heavy tank for your SSU army, which one would you get and why?

Definitely the Mao.  It's by far the most versatile, since it's a threat againt infantry, armor, and aircraft.

Well that's what I wanted to get first but the SSU won't be battling against Aricrafts this soon so AA is not a concern for the SSU…

Use the AA and MGs to chew up infantry until the planes come out.

Hahaha well that's an option…but by "this soon" I meant "ever".  I won't buy planes for the Axis, not for a couple of years.  But the Mao is still a great tank and i'm considering it.

You can get cheap planes online or on ebay to use. I have several myself and you can add bits to make them more DUST looking.

Thanks for the info but i'll try to make this as clear as I can:

The only army I have that will have flying stuff is the SSU.  I say this not because I don't have the money to buy Dust stuff (all my SSU and some Axis and Allies units are Premiums from Dust) but because I want all 3 armies to be as asymetrical and unique as possible.

So no planes for the Axis means NO planes for the Axis and that also means that the SSU won't ever need Anti-Aircraft firepower…ever.

I hope I didn't sound rude, that is not my intention.  Just wanted to make things clear cause in my mind and gameplay wise FOR ME:

Axis = Long range firepower

Allies = Mobility and short range

SSU = Aircrafts, troop/walker transport and surprise deployment and "jack-of-all-trades".

So in this unique and asymetrical spirit, I thought about adding 1 heavy tank to the SSU and have fun with it.

In the spirit of "uniqueness", I'd go with the Karl Marx. A very good all around heavy rank with negligible AA firepower and an exclusive heavy tesla gun.

That is my first choice for now…but that mortar is looking powerful!

Even the Lavrenty is a great tank…but as you say the Karl Marx is a bit more unique.

I play my games on two of the Dust playmats but I am worried they are too small to put Heavy mechs or tanks on. If I do get a big lump it will be the Beria as it looks the business!

The Lavrentiy is a bit too vanilla for my taste, and I doubt you'll have much chance of using that flamer with the difficulty this thing will have to move around the board.

I'd go with either the Karl Marx or the Vladimir Lenin. The Nikita looks like a terrible artillery walker, so the Lenin could fill it's role in a devastating way.

The Karl Marx look really cool…except for the 101 points it cost…

101 in a 300-350 points game is a big chunk just for a tank…

Is 400 points too much for a 4x3 tile map?

400 is pushing it on that size.  300 is the most we usually play on a 4x3

The table we use is a 42" x 72"…so if we don't want tiles to exceed the table we're stuck to 3 tiles width…

3x5 tiles…where each deployement zones on the larger width…we'll have to try something :P

 I think 400 is still ok for a 4x3.

Depending on terrain and the actual number of units I'd go as high as 450 on a 12 tile map, especially if my army has more than one near or +100 point units in it.

I don't always play board-games, but when I do I play Tannhauser.

Keep gaming my friend.
