Worst unit?
Published on 18 March 2012 - 09:54:15

Ok, we all have our favourite squads or walkers. But what about the opposite? What are the worst units in Your opinion?

Axis: There can be only one winner here - Hermann, mysterious failure of the game designers. Completely obsolete unit since the arrival of Heavy Laser Grenadiers.

Allies: I would say The Gunners, The only values of these guys is low cost - 20 points and "knife & grenades", but they are too universal - they cannot destroy a medium walker in one turn with even miraculous rolls, they are not a serious threat to enemy infantry, and the UGLs are IMHO inferior to Axis` panzerfausts.

Cm'on the gunners? Those guys are great compared to recon boys! And don't forget the fail of the year: the blackhawk:D

for axis I agree but for allies I would always put recon boys below the gunners.

Well, recon boys are even cheaper and they actually CAN kill enemy infantry, what makes them kinda specialized. Yeah, Blackhawk sucks, but with Fast and All-in-one it can pull off at least one heroic action. Still pretty chaep for a walker.

I can't call the Hermann the worst.  I saw a buddy completely shut a flank down with 3 of them a week ago

For me, maybe gorillas without Marcus and for allies I have a rough time making Hammers useful

Big fan of the Hermann. Gamewise maybe underdone but it has more of an advanced design compared to the Luther. Integral part of my Lazor list (for better or worse).

Axis units: anything Ape or Zombie, female characters in singlets.

Allied units: Captain America conversions, the Jockey Mech and chef hats.

For Axis I would say have to go with the Hermann, in packs or in Dust Warfare I'm sure it will prove alot more usefull but currently it has failed to prove its worth versus similarily priced units.

For the Allies I would have to go with the Recon Boys or the 'jack of all trades - master of none' Death Dealers.

Loth.  A close combat walker that only moves 1, will never make it to a fight.

My new favourite saying: "That is like taking a Loth to a knife fight."

The gunners have their use, they can take on infantry and make a start on a walker (or finish it, if damaged). When I started playing the Recon Boys seemed useless but since the revamped points costs have been introduced I think that each unit has its place and use.

Yes you may feel a unit is not as good as another unit but if you have 15 points left would you rather say "OK army done, let's play" or "OK I'll stick in a unit of Recon Rangers"

I'm not saying you aren't allowed to feel certain units aren't worth taking. What I'm saying is that some day somewhere you will happy they tagged along with the rest of your army.

I have trouble making the Hammers work but that is mostly because in the heat of the game I forget what infantry units can and can't hurt them in C and end up getting 5 dice rolled against them, scoring 2 or 3 hits.

But I can say it in three languages!"

Recon Boys in a walk. At 15 points, no AT ability, no ability to kill Armor 3 infantry, and only 2 UGLs, they don't have much to be proud of. For 15 points, I would MUCH rather bring a squad of 13 Foxtrot and Crack Shots. 2 activations, arguably better anti infantry ability, and they always count as in hard cover.

Recon Boys need to have their cost reduced to about 12 points for them to really be all that useful, ESPECIALLY compared to Recon Grenadiers.

The Hermann performed quite well in the couple of games I've played with it, and the Loth means serious business once you manage to maneuvre it on a flanking position, both for infantry and heavy walkers (two kampfzanges!!) with its charge and self repair abilities.

As much as they perform admirably in an anti-infantry role, I must say the Recon Boys; at least their Axis counterpart features a modicum of anti-tank power, but the Allied squad has close to nothing to compensate (it would need more UGLs or even just the Scout ability).

I admit, the Recon boys for allies made me doubt their viability when in the initial description (first boxed set) they basically were only defined as "having the highest casualties of the Allied forces..."

Death dealers are the worst squad for the allies. A victory mg can kill infantry but the bazooka can't even take a light walker out in one turn so its pointless.

Axis its the zombies and the gorillas are pretty much canon fodder with damage resilence.

It's only a game so have fun.
