My suggestion would be to visit your local hobby shop and purchase a 1/35th scale set of World War 2 American Infantry. Tamiya would be best in my opinion. The instructions will give both the colors you need and a detailed drawing of where the color is applied to the uniform.
Countless books and websites around!
Even just putting tank winter camo schemes ww2 will bring up options.
Best book i have ever seen for how to paint vehicles is the Tank FAQ book by Andrea Miniatures
President of the Aftermath gaming club based in UK East Anglia, Norfolk, Norwich.
Also a pro miniature painter having painted for Spartan Games, Crusader miniatures and Wargames Foundry.
May I suggest, Osprey Books on WWII:

"Don't get me wrong, there are certainly some questions, but at the end of the day… there are guys who will argue vehemently that the book never tells them to read the top of the die when its rolled." - Quote from a Game Designer
Try google books I've found a bunch on winter camo stuff. I just searched WWII US Winter Uniforms

Those who dont know the past are condemned to repeat it.
Artizan Designs has some pretty good guides for the US:
