Has anyone come up with a way to play a 3 or 4 player game?

Doesn't sound like it needs any special rules. Just plop down two boards and double the amount of forces in a skirmish game. Or play a standard game and give each player one commander and "flank" of the battle.

There's even a scenario up in the support section that uses two game boards and the forces from two core games that's perfect for this.

We use this method:

Assign each player a character/leader.  Each player gets its own command deck with all the cards from that Leader plus a proportion of the genic command cards (say half if both sides have two players).

Each player on a side gets to use a card (or order chit) each turn so no one sits around.  Beaware that more units will activate so its not for purists.  Its makes for a very lively game with everyone involved.

Those sound like fair rules and that they would make for an entertaining night.

Though I have no particular use for them I do hope they do something a little more offical for 4 player games just because it encourages play at game stores which will help to promote the game. It doesn't even have to be a product it could just be some rules in PDF and a few scenarios online.
