It seems strange to me that a crack unit has an advantage on the offensive in a melee, but not the defensive. Shouldn't a defender's melee rating at least be a negative factor on the attacker's die roll?

Not in the rules, but good idea....
Umh, well, later perhaps...
I suppose the big question is whether the one sided melees are based on balancing the game or simplifyng melees. It just seems odd that a mediocre attacker would have as good of a chance successfully assaulting the weakest unit in the opposing army as they would against the best. Of course even if a crack unit is defeated, it will have a better chance of a counter assault, but they may have already lost men in the first assault.
