I missed where it said transports could only put them in prow slots. Just found it, and fixed my apparent reading failure. Will be replacing it with a macro cannon of some sort. Thanks for catching it guys.
I'm also a fan of the Iconoclast Destroyer. It gives you a bonus on repair attempts, and is a good compliment to a larger ship.
Sanity is for the Weak!
For fast travel with small cargos, such as smuggling or passenger transport the Orion is just fantastic.
For scouting and light combat duties i cannot ovverate how effective a Tempest class frigate with extra armour is. Considering that with 20 points of armour it is now tougher than ships in the two classes above it (heavy frigate and light cruiser), still very fast compared to the bigger ships that can outlast it in combat and yet with a pair of Turbo-Pyros Melta macrocannon in the dorsal mounts it can melt anything that can keep up with it and out to a fairly good range too.
We used such a ship to startlingly potent effect in our campaign, only retiring it for a Defiant light cruiser after it had taken a mauling when fighting off a trio of lance equipped system ships… it still won but as we discovered lances were the only real weakness to it in combat.

For heavy combat vessels id probably have to pick the Repulsive Grand Cruiser - its so ancient and behemothal and yet also somehow sleek and deadly. Prow torpedo/nova cannon, dorsal lance batteries and a pair of macrocannon/lance/hangars on on each braodside give you a whither array of firepower. The spacious hull allows for plenty of ancillary components such as cargo bays, crew quarters, barracks, munitorums, medicae decks, minelayer gear etc.
Overall my favourite is probably the Repulsive - it scares off a lot of would be attackers but with the right setup can hold its own against multiple smaller ships and go toe to toe with all but the biggest ships, namely battleships as they can match its firepower and outlast it.

iLove the Firestorm-Frigate our group is using… fitted with Torpedos, Pyros Melta-Macros and pretty much everything else is tuned for speed and meuverability, it can outrun pretty much anything it can't outgun. Furthermore Main-Cargo Hold, Laboratorium, Librarium Vault and we're currently on a quest to get a teleportarium. Love that ship :3

Most light cruisers (excepting the Dauntless) and the only heavy frigate we have seen have 20 armour as standard. I still prefer the Turbulent in every way over the Tempest.
I prefer the Star Galleon, simply for it's looks, backstory and aura of grandeur. What a ship. <3
Absolutely the Meritech Shrike raider, its just flat superior to so many hulls.
Once, we were gods...
I love this thread.
*sigh*
my personal favorite is the firestorm class frigate. upgunned sword that has one hell of a punch for it's class. slap a cloaking device on it or an eldar holofield and you really start to get annoying.
for bigger ships I'd have to go with the lathe class monitor cruiser. archeotech goodness in a pretty hard hitting cruiser that if properly outfitted can stay out in the expanse for a very very long time. bad guys will think twice about attacking you in a ship that big, and you can exploit the hell outta anything you find out there.

I also have a soft spot for the Firestorm. It's such a good fighting ship for the money, although a bit short on space for additional components. A good lance and proper macrocannons and a good Master of Ordinance and people will cease to bother you as much.
Aaah, it was good when we made mincemeat of The Fell Hand. He ran and survived though, but had he stayed and fought we'd slain him.

You need to read your Errata:
Lathe-class Monitor Cruiser (page 153): The Lathe-class Monitor Cruiser is listed as having one Dorsal Weapon Capacity Slot. This is incorrect. The correct listing is "Prow 1, Port 1, Starboard 1."
