Cruise the Galaxy

Each entry in Starships and Speeders includes not only the profile for the vehicle, but also tips for using the vehicle in games. These include advice on what kinds of beings use the vehicle and for what purpose, as well as specific tips for handling the vehicle in an encounter.

The first section of Starships and Speeders focuses on planetary-bound vehicles that skim along the surfaces of various worlds. Chapter One, Speeders, covers repulsorlift vehicles such as airspeeders, landspeeders, and speeder bikes, like those made famous in Return of the Jedi. These vessels defy gravity, but they cannot leave a planet’s atmosphere. Then, Chapter Two examines ground vehicles. More specialized than repulsorlift vehicles, this category includes vehicles that move along the surface of a planet, as well as some select submersibles. Whether you are racing through the forests of Endor or running down to Tosche Station on Tatooine, this section will provide you with all the vehicles you need to navigate the planet and further immerse yourself in the Star Wars galaxy.

In the next section of the sourcebook, Starships and Speeders takes to the stars with Chapter Three, Starfighters and Shuttles. These pages are filled with the starfighters, shuttles, gunboats, and other spacecraft that soldiers and scoundrels alike use to navigate local star systems. While a key aspect of these specialized craft is their ability to operate with a single pilot and minimal crew, the sourcebook continues to explore the possibilities of interplanetary travel with Chapter Four that focuses on freighters, yachts, and other starships designed for peaceful purposes. Of course, whether or not these vehicles are used as they are designed is a different matter. Although many of these ships are equipped with weapons in case they need to defend themselves, their primary purpose is not military. Rather, much of their appeal stems from their ability to be modified, whether it be for a resource-depleted Rebel troop making do with the ships available, or a criminal looking for a smuggling ship that will not attract attention.

Lastly, the closing section of this sourcebook look at the largest ships in the galaxy beginning with Chapter Five, Cruisers and Frigates. These present you with midrange ships that require a significant crew to operate whether they be civilian or military ships that range from bulk haulers to escort frigates. Then Chapter Six, Battleships and Stations, includes the largest of all spacecraft. For the most part, ships of this scale belong to either the Empire or Rebel Alliance, for few other organizations have the resources or need for such massively expensive and destructive vessels. Filled with potent weapons and operated by hundreds or even thousands of crew members, these vessels show the true potential and might of all starships and can make for massive interstellar battles in your campaigns. In this chapter, the sourcebook even offers players and game masters a closer look at both the Onager-class Star Destroyer and the Nadiri Starhawk-class Battleship that have never appeared in Star Wars Roleplaying before! No matter where your story takes place in the Star Wars universe, Starships and Speeders has the vehicle you need to face any challenge.

Legendary Ships

While Starships and Speeders is the ultimate guide for the full galaxy’s range of vehicles all in one place, this sourcebook is far more than a compendium of vehicles as they have already appeared across the Star Wars Roleplaying game lines. Throughout its pages, Starships and Speeders includes named versions of beloved ship models built to the exact specifications of the pilot who made it famous. Within the book you will find Hera Syndulla’s Ghost (complete with Phantom II), Boba Fett’s Slave I; and of course, no collection would be complete without the iconic Millennium Falcon.

Known best as the ship that completed the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, the Falcon began its career as a humble intermodal tug, transferring cargo pods in orbital freight yards. With each new owner, the ship was modified more and more until it landed in the hands of smuggler Lando Calrissian. In addition to the Millennium Falcon’s already finely-tuned systems, Calrissian outfitted the ship with the polished finish of a luxury sports vessel and even added a hyperspace-equipped YT Dart auxiliary craft to act as an escape pod. The smuggler’s attention to detail kept the ship immaculately ordered and reliable; that is, until the rigors of the Kessel Run left the Falcon as little more than a scorched wreck.

This is the condition Han Solo found the Millennium Falcon in when he won it in a game of sabacc. Rather than focusing on cosmetic repairs, Solo sought to disguise the smuggling vessel as a battered junker, cramming military-spec hardware into the Falcon’s weapons, shielding, and sensor systems and covering key systems with warship-grade hull plating. While effective, these upgrades go beyond what the YT-1300 was designed to handle, making the ship fickle and in constant need of repairs. Both Han Solo and Lando Calrissian’s versions of the ship are featured in Starships and Speeders, and whichever you choose to integrate into your adventures, you will surely find that the Falcon shines as the jewel of this collection.

It also adds new pieces of equipment, including weapons and armor used by heroic and villainous characters whose deeds are whispered about across the stars.

Best in the Galaxy

Even iconic smugglers like Han Solo had to start somewhere in the galaxy. An orphan from Corellia, Solo started with nothing, but through wit, skill, and a little bit of luck, Han became a living legend.

A gift from renowned thief Tobias Beckett, Han Solo’s blaster has been at his side for years. Han’s blaster retains the boxy frame and detachable macroscope of the standard BlasTech Model DL-44, but it conceals a number of special modifications. Beckett’s hair trigger and low-power pulse warning in the grip remain, but Han also tricked out the capacitor to selectively overcharge blasts for better armor penetration. The blaster is never far from Han’s side, usually in a low-slung gunfighter’s holster.

If you happen to come into possession of Han Solo's blaster, you can set it to fire an overcharged shot once per round. Upgrade the difficulty of the next attack with this weapon once to add the Pierce 7 item quality to that attack. This can rip armor to shreds but comes with a severe drawback, as your GM might have the opportunity to have Han Solo’s trusty blaster run out of ammo at the worst possible time!

Handcrafted shortly before Chewbacca’s hrrtayyk coming of age ceremony, Chewie’s bowcaster has been helping him fulfill his life debt to Han Solo for years. A traditional weapon of his people, the bowcaster is effectively a high-tech crossbow that fires explosive quarrels encased in an energy sheath to cut resistance. The quarrels hit hard enough to penetrate the hides of Kashyyyk’s most dangerous creatures and then detonate, causing immense damage to the softer flesh underneath. Chewie installed an automatic recocker system on his bowcaster, so he doesn’t have to manually reset it between shots. Chewie usually wears a bandolier filled with alternate ammunition, such as armor-piercing quarrels, ion quarrels, and a variety of others.

Once per encounter, the wielder of Chewbacca’s Bowcaster may spend a maneuver to load a specialized quarrel and either add the Blast 6, Breach 1, Concussive 1, Disorient 2, Ion, or Vicious 4 quality to the next combat check made with Chewbacca's Bowcaster.

While Han Solo was learning the ropes of smuggling, his childhood friend Qi’ra was ascending through the ranks of the underworld, finding success through manipulation and intimidation. Qi’ra’s chrome-plated S-195 was a gift from Dryden Vos to celebrate her ascension to lieutenant within the Crimson Dawn criminal syndicate. The clean lines of the polished, elegant sidearm draw attention to Qi’ra, giving her an air of nobility—a far cry from her humble origins as an orphan living in Corellia’s sewers.

Once per encounter when making a Coercion or Negotiation check, the wielder of Qi’ra’s S-195 may, as an incidental, draw or gesture to the S-195 to upgrade the ability of the check once.

The Right Tools

Gadgets and Gear also contains hundreds of other pieces of equipment that are a little more common throughout the galaxy, making Gadgets and Gear the ideal book to keep track of your Star Wars equipment.

If you prefer your combat up close and personal, you can equip your characters with damaging blast knuckles. This unusual weapon consists of a heavy, armored glove with a small, integrated blaster emitter. Impact-sensitive plating across the knuckles fires the blaster when the wearer lands a punch, delivering a devastating blow. The blaster emitter is tiny, with almost no Galven circuitry to speak of, giving it a maximum range of mere centimeters. While blast knuckles are undeniably effective, they are also dangerous for the wielder, who may suffer the effects of overheating or even splash damage should the glove bunch awkwardly.

When a character uses blast knuckles, every successful hit inflicts 1 strain on the wielder, making them a dangerous choice of a weapon.

The “Mercy” grenade is a unique gas-based stun grenade which is typically used by large corporations and by covert agencies via shell corporations. The Mercy grenade is a failed riot-control device rejected due to acute side effects including nightmares, memory loss, and intense paranoia. Intelligence agencies, corporate security, and criminal syndicates use the Mercy grenade to cover their tracks, incapacitating potential resisters and erasing witness memories. They can use the Mercy to capture persons of interest, interrogate them, implant tracking devices, and then return them totally unaware that anything had happened.

Anyone hit with one of these grenades must make a hard resilience check, with anyone who fails having a jumbled memory of the encounter, making these grenades an ideal weapon for those who don’t want to be seen.

With so many weapons in the galaxy, you’ll need the right kind of armor to protect yourselves from any threats. Some of the heaviest non-powered personal armor on the market, Steelskin armor is illegal on most worlds and sure to draw significant attention in even the roughest of Outer Rim settlements. The sheer weight of the armor deters many potential users, and only the most physically able of warriors can wear it for any amount of time. Those who can handle the suit’s bulk gain an unrivaled increase in resistance.

Gearing Up

The gadgets and gear of the Star Wars galaxy open up worlds of possibility for adventurers. But it’s up to you to use these gadgets and gear for heroic ends. An Isolated Planet

Although humans and Zabrak have been born, lived, and died on Dathomir, the truly unique Dathomirians are near-humans who practice a strange blend of magicks and alchemy—those who make up the clans known as the Nightsisters. Generations of genetic drift and exposure to the planet’s power from the dark side of the Force have created a distinct people and culture focused on self-determination, strength, and discipline. Other species consider the Dathomirians selfish, dangerous, and cruel. If the Dathomirians cared about the opinions of others, they would agree.

Dathomirians in general want to be left alone, but the Clone Wars, the meddling of the Sith, and the prying of Jedi all threaten to expose their planet and society. The Nightsisters have sent away members to collect intelligence, hone their skills against the vast diversity of the galaxy, and even earn a few credits.

As the Nightsisters continue to grow in power and influence, they threaten to forgo their neutrality in matters regarding Sith and Jedi. Mother Talzin’s manipulations may bring Dathomir too far into the galactic limelight. Some Nightsisters chafe at the growing attention paid to their planet, their sanctuary. Others trust the leadership of Mother Talzin, pushing all Nightsisters to band under her. Some Nightsisters even talk about building their own Sith-like empire in order to control their destiny. Will your character hail from this mysterious planet? If so, what do they see as the future of their world?

Dathomirians begin with average characteristics, but their upbringing gifts them with additional ranks in coercion and survival, as well one rank in the Outdoorsman talent. This impressive ability allows players to remove a setback die from checks to move through terrain or manage environmental effects.

Masters of Witchcraft

Of course, just being a Dathomirian is not enough to strike fear into your foes. Collapse of the Republic also introduces Force users the Nightsisters into the pool of available universal specializations.

The Nightsisters study the Force in a much different way than the Jedi or even the Sith. The unique magickal ichor on Dathomir grants power and wisdom to those strong—or cruel—enough to wield it. In general, the Nightsisters consolidate and collect power, both through alchemy and magicks as well as self-reliance and personal strength.

While the Jedi and Sith might view the Nightsisters as agents of the dark side, the Nightsisters care little about the war between the two groups. The Nightsisters know no serenity or peace like the Jedi, yet they do not give in to rage or overt passion like the Sith. Instead, they freely cross the line between light and dark, embroiled in and thriving in conflict.

The Nightsister Talent Tree reflects their ability to wield the Force via witchcraft, and also their alchemical talents, giving players a whole new way to approach combat. For example, the Ichor Blade talent allows you to customize a melee or brawl weapon with the Pierce 2 and Cortosis qualities making even a simple blade a dangerous weapon.

Alchemical Power

Of course, the Nightsisters couldn’t thrive in conflict without weapons of battle, and Collapse of the Republic introduces new equipment that the Nightsisters can use to enact their will.

One of the most iconic Nightsister weapons is the Energy Bow, while some may view this ancient weapon as archaic, those who wield the bow understand its true power.

Developed by and for the Nightsisters, the energy bow seems strangely out of place in this era of blaster rifles and repeaters. As exotic and deadly as its wielders, this weapon uses a small plasma generator connected to a lightweight alloy bow to produce a dangerous energy bowstring. When drawn by its energy-proof grip, the bow generates a powerful solid plasma bolt that is then fired like an arrow from a traditional bow. The energy bow is silent, lethal, and able to pierce even the strongest armor. With Pierce 4, even the most armored of foes can’t stand up to the pure power of the Nightsisters' Energy Bow.

Of course, sometimes battles require a more personal touch. The mysterious Nightsisters use a number of bladed weapons, the most common of which is a deadly short sword known as a Duskblade. Carried both in battle and for ceremonial purposes, this weapon has a curved, single-edged blade similar to that of a scimitar or cutlass. The blade is broad at the tip and tapers toward the hilt, then flares out again where it meets the minimal handguard. It has a short, one-handed hilt and a guard on the outer edge below the cutting edge. Lightweight, flexible and easy to handle, these swords are lethal in the hands of a trained user.

A New Threat

Dathomir is a mysterious planet, many will never know it is home to some of the galaxy’s fiercest warriors. Though they have lived in isolation for years, the Clone Wars have brought a fight to their doorstep. Will you follow the path of the Nightsisters in your games of Star Wars Roleplaying?

Guardians of Peace

The role of the Jedi has shifted during the course of the Clone Wars. While these leaders have become accustomed to leading small forces on diplomatic missions, their roles have been expanded. Now, these guardians of peace and justice serve as generals of the Republic and lead thousands into the epic battles of the Clone Wars. In this new role, the Jedi inspire those around them, serving not only as leaders, but beacons of hope.

The General talent tree for Jedi allows you to embrace this new role. Strengthening those around you with your Leadership skill while wielding the power of the Force. The danger of this path lies in the possibility that Jedi Generals will forget their ultimate goal: peace. Jedi Generals must remember that they serve not only the Republic, but their Jedi Code and the galaxy as a whole. They have a responsibility to protect planets and their people even as they lead armies to occupy them. The thrill of victory and the rush of adrenaline can cloud the mind of even the most dedicated of Jedi. Victory cannot be the only goal.

A Jedi cannot ignore the binding principle that connects the galaxy, especially at a time of war. While a civilian may not see any utility in silent contemplation of the Force, a Master understands that wisdom can come from anywhere and everywhere. This is the path of many veteran Jedi, and is available as a new talent tree in Collapse of the Republic.

Although the title of “Master” requires the approval of the Jedi Council, this specialization covers overall wisdom, self-reflection, and mastery of the Force. A true Jedi Master requires no formal title, as they know the Force recognizes their ability.

The Price of Politics

Despite their differing allegiances, Senators for the Republic and Separatist Alliance fulfill similar duties. The Separatist Parliament even mimics the structure of the Galactic Senate, where most members previously served. Senators on both sides have the responsibility to represent not only their homeworlds, but also their constituents and their respective governments as a whole. These responsibilities often conflict and contradict, even as these politicians face the danger of a fractured government and a relentless enemy. If you’re willing to throw yourself into the world of Politics, the Senator talent tree might be for you.

Masters of social etiquette, Senators gain bonuses to skills like Charm, Coercion, Negotiation, and Deception throughout their talent tree.

Though many Senators in both governments spend the majority of their time in their respective Senates, some prefer a hands-on approach. After all, seeing disparity, atrocity, or disenfranchisement with their own eyes can make a problem more real and make arguments more impassioned. By traveling to affected worlds, a Senator can get more work done by personally organizing locals, investigating cover-ups, and gathering evidence.

While the Jedi lead one side of the Clone Wars, up-and-coming Separatist Commanders inspire their own forces. Due to the Separatists’ hodgepodge nature, their commanders come from all walks of life. Rebels or patriots, fueled more by passion and ambition than experience, can rise in the ranks through undisciplined but daring tactical decisions.

If you feel the call of duty to the Separatist forces, Collapse of the Republic features a talent tree specifically dedicated to the Separatist Commander.

A Separatist Commander must serve multiple roles, commanding fleets, troops, and tactical squads while coordinating surgical strikes and dealing with logistics and Separatist politics. These commanders have their own take on leadership, utilizing fear and passion to gain the upper hand in any type of conflict.

An Ancient Lineage

Mandalore’s location on the border of the Outer Rim and the inner rims of the galaxy makes Mandalorian Space highly coveted and contested. Historians have debated whether this constant invasion into the Mandalorians’ space led to their ancient warrior culture, or if their prime location led them toward dreams of conquest. Regardless, Mandalore has chosen a peaceful path. The Death Watch, however, sees this as a betrayal of both their past and their future.

The Mandalorian Civil War saw the progenitors of the Death Watch exiled to the moon Concordia. The survivors reformed as the Death Watch, which wants a strong and independent Mandalore ruled by warriors, free from the machinations of the Galactic Republic but also unshackled from the Separatists’ idealistic rebellion.

A Death Watch Warrior utilizes hit and run tactics and rapid, surgical strikes. Without a true army, the Death Watch cannot hold territory, but it can disrupt, destroy, and raze strategic locations such as communication outposts, power plants, and defense systems. To assist in their lightning attacks, each warrior trains in the use of a jetpack.

The Death Watch Warrior Talent tree paints the picture of a mobile and durable warrior. The first half of the tree will see you upgrading your physical abilities as you increase your strain and wound threshold, use your physical abilities to intimidate your foes, and begin to master your jetpack, adding a whole new dimension to battles.

A character using a jetpack operates as a vehicle, which means they require some special considerations during an encounter. These characters can perform the fly/drive maneuver to move any number of personal-scale range bands and avoid most obstacles and terrain while doing so. It is more important to track the character’s location in personal scale. If a character using a jetpack does not perform any maneuvers to move, that does not mean they are staying still. They may be hovering in place, flying in a circle, or otherwise maintaining their relative distance to other characters. How the player narrates this may have additional narrative effects on the scene and relevant skill checks.

It’s also important to remember that a character using a jetpack must perform a maneuver to accelerate or decelerate in order to take off or land safely. While these jetpacks can make you extremely mobile in a variety of situations, advanced warriors like ARC Troopers or Death Watch Warriors can truly take advantage of jetpacks with unique talents and abilities.

There are two different jetpacks featured in Collapse of the Republic, as well as a set of rocket boots that function in a similar way. While nearly anyone can equip a jetpack, mastering their use will be a challenge for any player.

Tools of the Trade

Jetpacks aren’t the only tool of the trade for Mandalorians, their fearsome weapons and iconic armor are all essential to the Death Watch lifestyle.

Typically, skilled Mandalorian smiths custom design and build suits of armor. Each user carefully defines the armor—in keeping with traditional patterns—to sync up with their unique combat styles and preferences. In this way, the suit becomes an embodiment of the wearer’s expertise. Many of these customizations are relatively minor, such as modifying joints to better accommodate maneuvers or incorporating holsters and pockets designed for particular gear. Others are more extensive, integrating a broad range of different armor modifications. This armor holds ancient traditions, and is one of the most iconic looks in the Star Wars galaxy.

Crushgaunts, are strength-enhancing gloves designed centuries ago by the Mandalorians. They are constructed from a reactive, polymer-enhanced material reinforced by beskar plates. When worn, crushgaunts increase a wearer’s grip strength to the point that they can shatter bone, crush durasteel, destroy weapons, and perform other deadly feats of strength. Thanks to their peculiar construction and beskar reinforcement, crushgaunts can even turn a lightsaber blade.

A new display pattern for equipment makes essential stats easy to find!

Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber is fairly standard when it comes to its physical components, a low critical value ensures your enemies will receive long lasting damage, especially with the Vicious 2 trait. However, to the galaxy at large, the lightsaber represents so much more. The Return of the Jedi ability allows the wielder of the lightsaber to spend a destiny point after deflecting a ranged attack to make disciple checks easier for their allies for the remainder of the encounter, inspiring those around them with impressive skill.

Every iconic weapon provides a unique ability for their wielder, giving additional thematic weight to weapons like Han Solo’s Custom DL-44 or Darth Vader’s Lightsaber.

The Right Fit

But these iconic weapons are exceptionally rare, wielded by those who have already proven themselves in the galaxy. Player character’s will have to rely on their own gadgets and gear to survive the conflicts of the Star Wars galaxy. Luckily, this sourcebook contains a wide swathe of options to prepare your character for the adventures ahead.

The soldiers fighting on the frontlines of war may be drawn to the wide variety of blasters throughout the galaxy. From the A280-CFE Convertible Heavy Blaster Pistol to the XL-2 “Flashfire” Light Blaster Pistol, over 60 ranged weapons are detailed in the book, making it the ideal place to find the perfect weapon to keep at your side in a pinch.

While blasters are by far the preferred ranged weaponry of the galaxy’s warriors, projectile armaments are still extremely common. Slugthrowers, the most common projectile weapons, are favored by smaller populations and those without access to blaster weaponry. Slugthrowers rely on chemical explosions to launch metal slugs at high speed toward targets. Flechette weaponry, which relies on sharp-edged debris, as well as dart shooters that impale targets and deliver a variety of toxins are also popular and Gadgets and Gear will guide you to 20 of these unique projectile weapons.

Those that find themselves on the edges of society, living in hives of scum and villainy on the Outer Rim might be drawn to more exotic weapons. Bounty Hunters often use weapons with Tractor Beam technology, and few have stared down the barrel of a custom Wookiee’s bowcaster and lived to tell the tale. These weapons are unorthodox, only found in certain regions of space, but that doesn’t make them any less effective than more traditional gadgets and gear. Over 20 of these weapons are featured in Gadgets and Gear, providing unique weapon options players may otherwise never consider.

Sentient beings have been fighting each other for survival, dominance, and pride in the Star Wars galaxy for millennia. While most now use high-tech weaponry to do so, many still resort to pummeling each other with whatever appendage is most handy. Brawling weapons range from classic knuckle-dusters to high-powered shock gloves, and they rarely require a user to learn new fighting techniques to wield them. Thirteen of these brawl weapons are detailed in Gadgets and Gear, for those who want fight up close and personal.

Unlike brawling weapons, melee and Lightsaber weapons require extensive training to use effectively. The designs vary from simple knives to longer polearms to the legendary lightsabers of the fabled Jedi Knights. Many of these weapons carry cultural significance and are used in traditional rituals or ceremonies. While generally considered inferior to ranged weaponry, melee weapons and lightsabers can be lethal if their wielders are able to close distance. Over 48 melee weapons are detailed in Gadgets and Gear.

Explosives and ordnance, which range from hand grenades and shaped charges all the way up to portable rockets and missiles, dominate battlefields. Explosive technology is capable of delivering a variety of effects and can be surprisingly versatile. Still, most explosive ordnance is restricted primarily to military use throughout the Empire. The process to obtain a permit to use military explosives is arduous, and permits are generally limited to certain mercenaries, local defense forces, and bounty hunters. With Gadgets and Gear, you'll find over 40 ways to solve a problem with explosives.

Each of these weapons can be customized with attachments. Customizing weapons and armor with unique modifications has given smugglers, starship captains, and stormtroopers alike the ability to individualize themselves and, often, send a message to those who would challenge them. From customized blasters to personalized lightsabers, Gadgets and Gear includes over 120 attachment options for your character’s gear.

While all of these weapons can be deadly, the proper armor can protect the savviest of heroes. As quickly as new weapons are designed and employed on the battlefield, engineers are tasked with creating stronger, more versatile armor to combat climbing casualties. Whether the goal is to save lives or simply avoid the costs of training new soldiers, armor is a vital part of warfare. However, even in day-to-day life, anyone who gets involved in a heated disagreement might want to be wearing something sturdy to protect their vitals. Over 50 pieces of armor are catalogued in Gadgets and Gear, including the Mandalorian armor worn by the infamous bounty hunter Boba Fett, and the cold prison of metal and wires that keeps the notorious Darth Vader alive.

The final chapter of the book focuses on the broad topic of equipment. Strewn across the galaxy is a seemingly unlimited number of items that range from weird and silly to essential for surviving in the hostile environments that are found around every corner. From cybernetic augmentations and medical equipment to microdroid listeners and fusion cutters, the Star Wars universe is brimming with a plethora of tools and gadgets that are sure to bring every adventure to life. The Beast

Chewbacca is recognized around the underworld as Han Solo’s more respectable Wookiee first mate, unflinchingly loyal even though he might be a reluctant partner in Han’s wilder schemes. Chewbacca’s loyalty is well-earned: he believes he owes Han a life debt, driving him to protect Han in return. The two met on Mimban, where Solo helped the Wookiee escape Imperial imprisonment and joined a criminal gang on an ambitious heist. The two stayed together afterward and became an inseparable team.

Chewbacca is a fierce combatant. He plays up his appearance and reputation as Han Solo’s muscle, while Han relies on the Wookiee’s reputation for strength and violence to intimidate his enemies. Chewbacca also certainly has Rebel sympathies. While Solo ostensibly makes the big decisions for the pair, Chewbacca has considerable influence and often guilts his partner into doing the right thing.

Chewbacca is almost always encountered with Han Solo, though the Wookiee sometimes has missions or tasks of his own in which the PCs might be involved. Chewie is constantly working on the Millennium Falcon and can often be found wherever the ship is berthed while Han takes care of other business.

Chewbacca is a fearsome foe or ally, and thanks to his life debt, he can spend a Destiny Point to reroll a skill check when aiding Han Solo. Aside from loyalty, Wookies are known for their dramatic temper and tendency to rip arms off. With the Wookiee Wins ability, Chewbacca can spend a triumph during Brawl checks to inflict the Maimed critical injury!

Whether you cross paths with Chewbacca as a friend or foe, he is a force to be reckoned with during any adventure.

Rule Through Fear

Wilhuff Tarkin is one of the Emperor’s most highly trusted officers and one of the most influential members of the New Order. Chancellor Palpatine was instrumental in drawing Tarkin into politics and into positions of increasing authority. Tarkin served as a captain and admiral in the Grand Army of the Republic, and once led his home world of Eriadu in the Seswenna sector. Tarkin has advocated ruling through the fear of force more than through force itself, which he included as a key part of his Tarkin Doctrine.

Grand Moff Tarkin’s influence reaches far beyond the Death Star project. As one of the galaxy’s most powerful political and military commanders, he may become involved in virtually any major Imperial situation. The completion of the Death Star occupies much of his attention, but his support of additional projects, such as Grand Admiral Thrawn’s TIE defender, can lead him to other weapons development and manufacturing facilities in the galaxy. If Rebel PCs become too effective or popular, he may personally lead a force to deal with them.

Going toe to toe with Tarkin can be an intimidating affair: his Commanding Presence can add advantages and successes to his allies and disadvantages and failures to his enemies. Tarkin’s strength comes from his ability to rule through fear, and any characters that oppose him will have to take on an inspired Imperial legion.

The Scarred Hunter

A disgraced Wookiee in exile, Krrsantan fled Kashyyyk by volunteering to fight for the Xonti Brothers. Without Krrsantan’s consent, the Xonti Brothers grafted mechanical enhancements to Krrsantan’s body, making him practically invincible in gladiatorial bouts. Enraged, the black-furred Wookiee fled, eventually becoming an elite bounty hunter hired by the likes of Jabba the Hutt and Darth Vader. However, much of his time is spent partnered with Doctor Aphra, who has promised him a lot of credits and a lead on the Xonti Brothers. Krrsantan has sworn to repay the brothers in kind, in some twisted version of the traditional Wookiee life debt.

Large even for a Wookiee, Krrsantan has black fur braided and decorated with gold baubles to distract from his many scars. The largest, which cuts across his left eye, is allegedly from the blade of legendary Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Krrsantan wears a traditional armored harness and pauldrons in the style of Wookiee warriors from the city of Kachirho. He revels in hand-to-hand combat, even engaging in gladiatorial bouts to the death for fun.

Black Krrsantan can turn up anywhere in the galaxy, but he's most often found in or around spaceports that house extensive criminal networks. There, he might hunt down any number of scum on behalf of galactic power brokers. His work with Aphra often sends him to archaeological sites, museums, and universities. If someone has hired Black Krrsantan to hunt the PCs, he forces a confrontation the moment he feels the odds are even or better. He prefers to fight barehanded, throwing, punching, and choking enemies into submission. Krrsantan prefers direct confrontations, using his bowcaster only if outnumbered.

Taking on Krrsantan in a direct fight is highly inadvisable—with his Pit Fighter ability, the fearsome Wookiee can add 30 to any critical injury roll stemming from a Melee or Brawl check!

Strength in Numbers

Banthas are found on thousands of worlds across the galaxy, with hundreds of variant species demonstrating this mammal’s adaptability. They are able to thrive in a variety of environments, including marshy swampland, verdant forests, harsh deserts, and even polar tundras. Easily domesticated, banthas are used as beasts of burden and as a food source. Banthas are also used as mounts in numerous cultures throughout the stars.

Banthas are most commonly encountered as mounts or as herd animals. PCs may be tasked to guide a herd from one area to another, possibly requiring a variety of tasks to manage the herd and to help any banthas that are caught in distress. When used as a mount, the bantha can be a formidable opponent in close combat. Given their ability to carry a heavy load, banthas can also be utilized to carry PCs armed with heavy weaponry or aid in rapidly moving weapon emplacements.

Banthas can be easily domesticated and can also be used bear the weight of encumbering gear. It’s a slow moving method of travel, but one that is necessary when moving lots of equipment.

Last Days of the Republic

Collapse of the Republic serves as a companion piece and a sequel of sorts to Rise of the Separatists. While the latter book details the first half of the Clone Wars, Collapse of the Republic details the end of the war and the Republic. Along with a new era embraced by this new book, you'll also find new species and specializations included within the sourcebook—all of which played a role in the Clone Wars, including the mystic Dathomirians.

Although humans and Zabrak have been born, lived, and died on Dathomir, the truly unique Dathomirians are near-humans who practice a strange blend of magicks and alchemy. Generations of genetic drift and exposure to the planet’s power from the dark side of the Force have created a distinct people and culture focused on self-determination, strength, and discipline. Dathomirians have average characteristics, but due to their rough upbringing, they also receive several ranks in Coercion, Survival, and Outdoorsman.

Collapse of the Republic also introduces several new specializations, and offers new takes on classic tropes. For example, the Clone Wars have raged on for years, and Clone Troopers have adapted to new battlefield tactics. In the beginning of the Clone Wars, the Grand Army of the Republic consisted of identical soldiers with training along special parameters: ground combat, air combat, and officer and leadership training. Now, different factors have created slight but profound variations.

Three new specializations open themselves up to those who choose to take on the role of a Clone Trooper in Collapse of the Republic. ARC Troopers fulfill the need for small and tactical squads, relying on their peak physical fitness and advanced training to complete their missions. These clones are required to think creatively and independently, are considered the best of the best, and are now available as a specialization tree in Collapse of the Republic.

The biogeneticists on Kamino understood that a clone army needs specialized commanders. While non-clone commanders could serve the function, the Kaminoans wished to sell a fully staffed military as a whole package and took on the challenge of providing an independent thinker with unwavering loyalty to their buyer. A Clone Commander can come from the soldier’s ranks, having shown a natural ability to command, or can be engineered on Kamino through specialty training. The Jedi lean on these commanders to advise them, enforce discipline, and execute the Jedi’s orders. These Commanders are also a new specialization featured in Collapse of the Republic, inspiring those around them with their exceptional leadership qualities.

Cloning, training, mental implants, and programming pale in comparison to field experience. Even the engineers on Kamino and the skeptics in the Republic government can’t deny the skill and talent of a veteran soldier. A training program can’t take into account all the variables of combat, so veterans rely on firsthand knowledge of battle, tactics, and even psychology. Engagement with the enemy means learning about the enemy, and a clone commander or Jedi is wise to ask the counsel of a veteran on any tactical matter. Perhaps your specialization is the Clone Veteran, who relies on their battlefield experience to get them through the quickly escalating Clone Wars.

Secrets of the Clone Wars

The Game Master also gains plenty of new tools in Collapse of the Republic, including profiles of prolific NPCs from the latter days of the Clone Wars.

Though he was originally a slave rescued from Tatooine, Anakin Skywalker has become one of the greatest warriors in the Jedi Order by the time of the Clone Wars. He favors a proactive stance that borders on recklessness, but the clones of Captain Rex’s 501st respect his style of leading from the front. Still, his lack of patience has gotten him injured and even captured many times, requiring his former master Obi-Wan Kenobi to save him. Promoted to Jedi Knight in the wake of the Battle of Geonosis, Skywalker still works closely with his former master, and he is never far from his Padawan, Ahsoka Tano.

As the Chosen One, Anakin Skywalker has an acute control over his Force powers and he can provide a boost to other Force-sensitive characters in an encounter, or use his leadership skills to direct a large-scale battle in the Clone Wars!

Beacon of Hope

Jyn Erso’s fight against the Empire started with the loss of her parents at a young age. In truth, her father, Galen Erso, put her on this path with the family’s escape from his Imperial servitude. After Imperial forces abducted Galen and killed Jyn’s mother, Lyra Erso, on Lah’mu, Saw Gerrera rescued and raised Jyn. For eight years, she learned to fight and hate the Empire alongside extremist insurgents. Though Jyn became an excellent fighter, Saw abandoned her to protect her from those who wished to gain access to her father and his work.

Jyn flies under the radar, keeping to the Outer Rim and using a number of aliases, such as Liana Hallik and Kestrel Dawn. She's a consummate loner who trusts no one, so interactions with the players will typically be short and rude. Though she became a loner after her abandonment, campaigns set years before the Battle of Yavin might find her fighting alongside Saw Gerrera. Unlimited Power

Emperor Palpatine is almost single-handedly responsible for the destruction of the Republic and the creation of the Galactic Empire… but to the vast majority of the populace, he is simply the Senator from Naboo who rose to prominence and ultimately became Chancellor of the Republic before the Clone Wars erupted.

Most, but certainly not all, galactic citizens would be horrified to know Palpatine’s true identity as a Sith Lord and enemy of the Jedi. They would be equally dismayed to learn how he manipulated those in power into handing him control and then engineered the Clone Wars to secure his position with an iron grip. Palpatine masterfully played both sides without either learning the truth.

Everyone knows who the Emperor is, but it's important to remember that almost no one knows what he truly is. The player characters should fear the Emperor because he embodies unfathomable political and military power, not because of his connection to the dark side. If they're unlucky enough to encounter him, they'll soon learn that the Emperor almost always travels with an overwhelming military escort. Even if they avoid direct contact, his agents are seemingly everywhere, and some are rumored to use the Force. The Emperor might make a surprise public appearance where the players are located if they're currently in Imperial space. In fact, if any of the PCs are Force users, they may even attract the attention of Palpatine's true self, Darth Sidious.

The Legendary Hunter

Widely regarded as the finest bounty hunter in the galaxy, Boba Fett is living the life his father groomed him for. An unaltered clone of Jango Fett, Boba trained under the best bounty hunters since birth, including Jango Fett, Aurra Sing, and Zam Wesell. After a failed attempt to avenge Jango earned Boba a stint at a maximum-security prison on Coruscant, he resumed his training and eventually claimed his father’s mantle as the best bounty hunter in the galaxy.

Boba Fett is a bounty hunter who has passed into legend. Stories told of his deeds have been exaggerated and passed along between criminals for years, leading many to surrender just at the sight of his T-shaped visor and Mandalorian armor. Boba Fett is a man of great will, seemingly indestructible and capable of relentless pursuit—he usually stalks targets by intimidating and blasting his way through witnesses until he catches up to them. In combat, he uses his jetpack to ambush and blitz opponents with an arsenal of powerful integrated weaponry.

Part of the Tribe

Ewoks are a species of short, furry, bipeds native to the forest moon of Endor. Their fur coloration ranges from white and tan to brown and even black, with the occasional member having blotchy spots or stripes. Deceptively strong for their size, Ewok hunters are capable of besting larger opponents. Ewoks also have a tribal society, living in vast forest villages built high in the trees of their world. Although their technological level is not high, they have mastered advanced construction techniques and build great platforms, bridges, and huts among the great trunks and limbs. Some Ewoks even sail through the air on gliders made from leather and vines, and for hunting, the Ewoks have developed a variety of weapons such as spears, axes, bows, knives, nets, and slings, as well as larger complex weapons like battering rams and catapults.

Aggressive Negotiations

While many equate the struggles of the Republic with the ground fighting seen on Muunilinst and Malastare, battles continue under another guise in the political arena. The Umbarans, deft at navigating the factions and ambitions of their homeworld castes, revel in the intrigue and backchannel diplomacy that whispers down the halls of the Senate. With their uncanny ability to sway others to their cause, some wonder whether they aren’t capable of some form of mind control. Their shadowy reputation is only deepened by their aversion to bright sunlight and their superior senses in darkness. For those Umbarans who have fallen out of the caste systems and have turned to a life of crime, their entrancing gaze allows them to flourish in the underlevels of Coruscant and the back alleys of industrial words and far-flung outposts.

On the front lines of battle, a more direct approach is required. The clones born and bred in labs on Kamino form the indisputable backbone of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). Their genome was carefully selected for superior strength and speed, and from the time they are decanted, their athleticism is put to the test in a series of rigorous trials. Alongside their physical training, battlefield tactics and discipline are drilled into clone recruits from an early age, all to ensure that the Republic is provided with the perfect fighting force. Yet, as they face their first true tests in the field, the clones must learn to balance their inborn tendencies for loyalty and obedience with their newfound desire to forge their own paths and identity. Flung into squadrons as battlefield commanders, pilots, or troopers, these soldiers gain strength from the familiar sight of their brethren. All three of these archetypes are represented as specializations with the new Clone Soldier career!

The Clone Officer specialization makes use of their training to command their brothers-in-arms in battle and lend them an ear when the going gets tough. Clone Pilots specialize in piloting the iconic Low Altitude Assault Transports (LAATs) and All-Terrain Tactical Enforcers (AT-TEs), gauging the lulls in battle to deploy complements of clone soldiers swiftly while sustaining minimal casualties with the Assault Drop talent. The unsung heroes of the Clone Wars, Clone Troopers serve as the rank-and-file infantry in the GAR and are equipped with an impressive arsenal to match. These soldiers excel at employing heavy weaponry to devastating effect, including the gunnery emplacements found on artillery installations, vehicles, and starships. No matter their role in the squad, hard experience teaches these clones the best ways to take out their enemies. With access to the Clanker Killer talent, clones can prove their brute effectiveness at dispatching CIS droids en masse, seizing on every opportunity to take the perfect shot or aim for the battle droids’ weaknesses.

Finally, the Masters of the High Council have rallied the Jedi to serve as leaders and special operatives in the conflict. Whether they’re leading the vanguard, pursuing dangerous special missions, or directing strategy from the gunships, the fighting capabilities of the Jedi Knights and their Padawans are revered and feared around the galaxy. Jedi Knight serve as warriors, diplomats, ambassadors, and scholars all at once, entering into “aggressive negotiations” at need or staging daring rescue missions for Senate dignitaries. Padawans learn from experience, and they can come through in unpredictable and surprising ways. No matter their level of experience, the Jedi must harness their skills and wisdom to see justice done and avoid letting the high emotions of the battlefield tempt them to the dark side.

Beyond the Clone Soldier and Jedi careers, players looking to create character concepts well-suited to the Clone Wars will also be able to choose from the Force-Sensitive Outcast, Republic Navy Officer, Republic Representative, and Scavenger universal specializations. The story of the Clone Wars is at once an epic tale of grand battles and sweeping political gamesmanship, as well as a deeply personal saga, featuring stories of courage and loyalty, temptation and redemption. Will the player characters pursue their duty at any cost, or will they question their orders and seek their own destiny?

Rise of the Separatists—coming very soon to a game store near you—aids players and Game Masters alike in exploring the tones and themes of this period of galactic strife, with new mechanics and narrative frameworks to bring to your Star Wars Roleplaying campaigns.

Introducing the Players

The fates of entire factions rest in the hands of the individuals who care deeply for their cause, but the challenges of war—and the costs required for victory—can sometimes cause those same people to break with their former allies and masters. To dramatize these conflicts and set up situations to force the player characters to face the same choices, GMs need to understand the motivations of the different factions, as well as the behind-the-scenes machinations of each faction’s most powerful actors.

Rise of the Separatists looks in-depth at the origins and organization of the biggest players in the Clone Wars, from the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems to the Jedi Order and the secretive Sith. Game Masters will benefit from a deep dive into the political structures of the Republic, from the past and present factions of the Senate, to the committees and bureaucracies that oversee Republic policy. A cast of political aides and NPC profiles for prominent figures like Padmé Amidala allows GMs to craft their own intrigues and double-crosses involving threats of corruption, sedition, militarism, or secession.

Seen by some as a new, authoritarian extension of Republic authority, the Jedi Order plays a key part in the current state of galactic politics. An overview of the hierarchy of the Jedi High Council and the other councils of the order offers plot hooks and moral quandaries for player characters to explore. Many wonder whether the Jedi have lost their way, sacrificing introspection and balance with the Force for immediate results on the battlefield. For the Separatists, this once-proud tradition seems to have become a mere pawn of the corrupt and ineffectual Senate. And with the Jedi sustaining heavy losses in the escalating fight, padawans are swiftly promoted to knights, and forced to train even younger padawans before their own training is truly complete.

This era sourcebook also pulls back the curtain on the inner workings of the Grand Army of the Republic. A huge bureaucracy is vital to oversee the deployment and supply of clone regiments, local garrisons, and starfighter patrols, as well as medics and mechanics. In addition to fleshing out the forces of the Republic, including stock NPC profiles for archetypal figures, this book also provides Game Masters with a wide array of battle droid minions and adversaries to build up the CIS armies in their games, as well as the figures who have worked behind the scenes to secure their planet’s independence and prosperity. From the cunning Count Dooku to villains like Asajj Ventress and General Grievous, GMs can challenge the PCs with true nemeses over the course of the entire campaign.

Though the true origins of the Clone Wars are shrouded in secrecy, the citizens of the galaxy are all too familiar with the cost they have had to bear. Profiles on the planets Geonosis, Kamino, Naboo, and Tatooine during this era provide additional context for the fighting as well as high stakes for the continually unfolding conflict. Each planet features modular encounters and planet-specific histories, points of interest, and recaps of famous battles fought there during the Clone Wars.

Setting the Stage

In addition to the wealth of information on the major players in the conflict and the worlds at stake, Rise of the Separatists includes guidance and new rules for recreating the feeling of The Clone Wars television series in your campaigns. Game Masters will find an entire chapter dedicated to rules for squads and squadrons, directions for structuring a session in the style of a film serial, and suggestions for expanding the cast of player characters through troupe-style play.

Jedi generals and ace pilots can call upon the rank-and-file to fight at their side in times of desperation, and the new rules for squads and squadrons let players lead these units into battle and command them into formation. Each formation gives a squad or squadron unique benefits, whether they are going dark to infiltrate an enemy position or putting together a search party to find lost allies or locate CIS scouts. Armed with these new optional rules, player characters can strike a decisive blow against an enemy or live to fight another battle thanks to the noble sacrifices of their comrades. In addition to these mechanical resources, Rise of the Separatists supports GMs in setting the stage for a truly epic confrontation, with suggestions for instances when zooming in or zooming out of the action can best capture the action and embroil the PCs in the conflict.

With the variety of stories unfolding against the backdrop of war, the troupe style of play can assist groups in exploring all the stories and settings the Clone Wars has to offer. Rather than trying to contrive scenarios in which a group’s clone and Jedi characters always work together, players can create multiple characters to feature in different scenes and storylines at different times. Rise of the Separatists advises players and GMs on how to swap between these different troupes during a session, including guidance for balancing spotlight time and exploring a range of character motivations. Additionally, the tropes associated with film serials detailed in this book can help GMs maintain the frenetic pace of an action-adventure series, as well as keep your players coming back for more by ending on a cliffhanger.

The Clone Wars were a time for friends and foes to demonstrate their skill and true allegiances, but the conflict will take a toll on them all. When the Separatists unleashed their legions of battle droids on Geonosis, they did not expect for the Jedi to have an entire army mobilized, fully trained and equipped for battle. In Rise of the Separatists, a whole new arsenal is available to deploy to your tabletop campaigns.

As the second Star Wars Roleplaying Game era sourcebook, Rise of the Separatists showcases iconic Clone Wars era vehicles and starships, including AAT-1 hover tanks, LAAT/i transports, AT-TE walkers, Venator-class star destroyers, and more. Players can find new attachments and gear to upgrade their firepower and supplement their protection when facing superior forces, while GMs can steer ever-more-deadly droid vehicles and battleships into combat against the heroes. And for the cunning—or the opportunistic—the influx of arms into the galaxy and the scrap left in the wake of battle present countless possibilities to profit.

Armories and Armaments

The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) bears the responsibility for outfitting soldiers with the necessary weapons and armaments to conduct war, and for their upkeep. This alone creates a markedly different tone compared to a campaign featuring credit-strapped scoundrels, underdog Rebel heroes, and on-the-run Force-sensitives—but it also places a greater charge on those soldiers to avoid losing excessive materiel. In addition to their regular loadout, clone soldiers are sometimes granted special issue equipment to execute a boarding action, planetary assault, reconnaissance mission, or other special objective. Adaptability on the battlefield is key, not only in terms of tactics employed to counter Separatist forces, but also overcoming and capitalizing on the terrain itself, whether the GAR’s soldiers are infiltrating the corridors of a starship or staging a jungle invasion planetside.

To return order and peace to the galaxy, clone soldiers march into battle with powerful, sturdy weapons and armor whose cost in credits would be out of reach of most galactic citizens—even if such a weapon did find its way onto the black market without a clone firing key. Such power comes with a cost, however, with weapons like the DC-15 blaster rifle and the Z-6 rotary blaster cannon being notoriously heavy and even prone to overheating. Some clone soldiers, especially marksmen, modify these weapons to increase their reliability and accuracy. When the fighting is fiercest, squads might be assigned flame troopers wielding the BT X-42 heavy flame projector, while the RPS-6 rocket launcher can disable or destroy enemy vehicles in the steady hands of a clone trooper.

All clone soldiers are clad in laminate armor that favors protection over comfort, offering soldiers some protection from blaster fire and even enabling them to survive for short bouts in vacuum. Advanced Recon Commando (ARC) trooper armor affords improved mobility at great cost to the Republic, but the integrated commlinks and scanning technologies are essential to the success of these troopers’ missions.

Some of the fiercest combatants on the battlefield, however, are the Jedi knights. These legendary guardians and peacekeepers of the Republic have sometimes adopted the suits of the clone troopers for protection, using only the most important pieces of laminate plates to avoid impeding their lightsaber forms and acrobatics. This so-called “Jedi Commander armor” is a stark reminder of the violent new reality commonly faced by the once-peaceful Order.

With war raging and no end in sight, the training of a padawan must continue, despite the difficult circumstances. To join the fight alongside their masters, Jedi apprentices quest to obtain a kyber crystal to focus the energies of their lightsaber. In Rise of the Separatists, players using the Jedi career can choose from the simple elegance of crystals from Ilum, the mysterious healing properties inherent in Thontiin crystals, or the rare but devastating power of the Zophis crystals, as well as other modification options to personalize their lightsaber.

Dogfights and Dropships

Just as versatile as the GAR’s ground forces is the Low Altitude Assault Transport/infantry (LAAT/i) airspeeder, which simultaneously serves as a troop transport and gunboat, laying down impressive air-to-ground and air-to-air support fire. First deployed during the Battle of Geonosis to resounding effect, this ship has become mainstay on the battlefield and has proven its resilience, even in the face of superior firepower.

The LAAT/i is a balanced ship with good speed, fair handling, and superb survivability, all of which are necessary for the pilot and copilot to safely deliver their payload—whether that’s three squads of clone soldiers, four troopers on speeder bikes, or laser cannon fire. Squads rely on the LAAT/i to get where they’re needed, and to help them secure important objectives or concentrate firepower against entrenched enemy positions. When serving as fire support, two to four gunners have an array of weapons systems at their disposal, such as laser cannons and turrets, guided missiles and air-to-air rockets, and in special cases, even the “Droidbuster” EMP missile launcher, capable of devastating the main form of Separatist infantry.

For the knights of the Jedi Order, their pursuit of justice and peace frequently takes them to far-flung reaches of the galaxy, where they must undertake delicate negotiations on their own. Stealth and speed are paramount to avoid detection by the CIS navy, but in the worst-case scenario, pilots must be able to defend themselves until help arrives or they can seize the chance to flee. The Delta-7 Aethersprite-class interceptor fits the bill perfectly: a swift and responsive starfighter that packs an impressive punch for its small size. A built-in astromech droid assists with targeting and minor system repairs, but primarily serves to interface with hyperspace docking rings so that the ship isn’t burdened with the weight of its own hyperdrive. These ships are excellent support craft in large fleet battles, but they can also hold their own in a dogfight.

The ships you’ll find in Rise of the Separatists go beyond simple speeders and smaller starfighters. The Separatists and the Republic have brought entire planets’ worth of industry to bear in order to emerge victorious. From the Venator-class star destroyer—impressive carriers capable of laying waste to enemy emplacements and ships in atmospheric encounters and space battles alike—to the Munificent-class heavy frigates of the CIS navy—almost entirely automated and defended by squadrons of screaming-fast vulture droids—both sides are well matched, ensuring that victory will come down to those individuals whose crafty gambits and brave sacrifices can turn the tide.
