The Card Game Team with Gen Con Predictions

Gen Con Indy—the best four days in gaming—is fast approaching! And while Gen Con is undoubtedly the perfect place to hear the latest announcements and demo upcoming games, it also plays host to the North American championships for all of our Organized Play games.

Today, the members of the card game team make their predictions about what decks and cards will leave their mark on the tournament field at Gen Con Indy 2018!

Aaron Haltom on Star Wars™: Destiny

Q: What’s your prediction for a winning deck?

At the time of this writing, the metagame seems wide open, and predicting a winner is very difficult. At the World Championship in May, the field was very diverse, with twelve different decks represented among the Top 16. The only teams to be repeated in the top cut were elite Sabine Wren (Empire at War, 40) / elite Ezra Bridger (Empire at War, 38), elite Rey (Two-Player Game, 24) / elite Aayla Secura (Legacies, 29), and elite Boba Fett (Legacies, 19) / elite Seventh Sister (Empire at War, 10). The European Championship in June also had a very diverse field, but again saw those same three teams tending to rise to the top. With the most recent Standard Format Holocron update, however, both Sabine Wren and Aayla Secura now cost one more point to field, forcing those decks to change partners and probably bring a weaker team overall. That puts Boba Fett / Seventh Sister in a potentially good place to inherit the throne.

But now that Way of the Force is out and affecting the meta, things are sure to change. On the Villain side, I expect to see Snoke (Way of the Force, 4) and Arihnda Pryce (Way of the Force, 18) seeing a lot of play. These two solid support characters should go a long way towards making those great seventeen-point characters like Cad Bane (Empire at War, 18) really shine. On the Hero side of things, I expect to see Luke Skywalker (Way of the Force, 56) and Leia Organa (Way of the Force, 73) getting integrated into a lot of teams where both characters are able to shine equally.

With all of these powerful options just opening up, it’s still too early to guess what might come out on top!

Q: If you see those decks as your favorites, what’s a dark horse or X-factor deck that you feel has an outside chance of surprising everyone?

Villain vehicles is an archetype that hasn’t really had its day in the sun yet, but I feel like it could take some people by surprise now.

Planetary Bombardment (Way of the Force, 33) is a heavy-hitter that rewards you for playing numerous vehicles, which is easier than ever thanks to the inexpensive new podracers. This deck also gained some great economy in the form of Testing Procedure (Way of the Force, 27). While this deck might be too one-dimensional to go all the way, it packs enough raw power that it could definitely make a splash.

Q: Are there any new cards from recent sets you’re looking forward to seeing in action?

Yes, so many! Red has been falling behind in popularity lately, but the new release offers some great cards that will hopefully make it a more alluring choice. Suppressive Fire (Way of the Force, 84) opens up a new strategy, allowing you to set up your die removal proactively and First Aid (Way of the Force, 77) is capable of creating a four-health swing for just one resource.

There are also many cards in Way of the Force that have a lot of fun combo potential, and I look forward to seeing if the master deckbuilders out there can get enough value out of them to make them tournament viable.

Q: Are there any “unknowns” in the current meta you’re hoping to gain some insight on from the event?

There are several things I am keeping an eye on as this new meta develops. Will the tools from this set make mill decks rise in popularity? Will Cassian Andor enable a true mill / damage hybrid deck that can go either way? Will Villain vehicle decks become competitive? A new set shakes up the game so much, it’s impossible to predict exactly how everything will shake out. But therein lies the fun!

Q: What’s your prediction for a winning deck?

I think we might finally see Phoenix take home the cup! They’ve picked up a couple of really great cards in the Elemental Cycle so far and I feel like that might give them the gas they need to overtake some of the front-runners like Crab and Scorpion. This includes the powerful Feral Ningyo (Tainted Lands, 36) and Asako Azunami (The Ebb and Flow, 66), who both can leverage the Water Ring to extra effect. This means if you are facing down a Phoenix, pay extra attention to the Water Ring!

Q: If you see that deck as your favorite, what’s a dark horse or X-factor deck that you feel has an outside chance of surprising everyone?

I’d say that the Unicorn are kinda the dark horse (har har) going into this tournament. They have not been top performers on the big stage up until this point, but they have gotten a big boost of new cards in the latest cycle, and I feel they have the potential to put up some really great games against the field. Shinjo Shono (Breath of the Kami, 11) is an especially dangerous new Unicorn character with explosive potential that players will have to watch for.

Q: Are there any new cards from recent sets you’re looking forward to seeing in action?

Ikoma Ikehata (The Fires Within, 46) is a particular favorite card of mine that I am looking forward to seeing in action. The Lion Clan is typically weak on the political end of the conflict spectrum, but Ikehata helps them fight back by keeping your opponent’s most powerful political character out of the conflict. This could help the Lion gain some extra footing, and maybe even secure a surprise province break or two. Additionally, the presence of several Mantis Clan cards like Kudaka (Breath of the Kami, 13) or Yoritomo (The Ebb and Flow, 70) should have a very interesting effect across the board.

Q: Are there any “unknowns” in the current meta you’re hoping to gain some insight on from the event?

This will be the first major tournament to include cards from the Elemental Cycle, which makes this event the first test for a lot of new cards. The odds of a meta shake-up are pretty high, but the entire cycle will not be legal at the time of the tournament, so some new themes might not be fully present. Whatever happens, it’s gonna be interesting!

Danny Schaefer on A Game of Thrones: The Card Game

Q: What’s your prediction for a winning deck?

I'd predict that Targaryen The Wars to Come (The Sands of Dorne, 45) will win the tournament. Targaryen has been one of the top factions lately (alongside Martell and Tyrell), and they get some interesting new cards from the recent Chapter Packs. The Wars to Come builds in particular give players a lot of options for controlling the board and interacting with their opponent—a playstyle that I think top players will find attractive. And it doesn’t hurt that you get to make use powerful cards like Daenerys Targaryen (The Faith Militant, 93), Flea Bottom (Oberyn’s Revenge, 98), and Dracarys! (Core Set, 176).

Q: If you see that deck as your favorite, what’s a dark horse or X-factor deck that you feel has an outside chance of surprising everyone?

I’m leaning towards Stark as a dark horse winner. They’ve spent a long time as one of the weaker factions, but they’ve been gaining some momentum recently. Stark has gained a lot of interesting cards in recent Chapter Packs, including the new Arya Stark (The Faith Militant, 81), Wyman Manderly (The March of Winterfell, 21), and Northern Armory (The Shadow City, 3). Stark is great at putting pressure on the opponent and winning challenges, while also having the necessary interaction to stop any shenanigans, backed up with healthy levels of card draw and economy. This combination of strengths gives Stark the tools to go toe-to-toe with the top decks, and I’m excited to see what Stark players can accomplish at the tournament.

Q: Are there any new cards from recent sets you’re looking forward to seeing in action?

Lots! The Dance of Shadows cycle introduces a ton of exciting cards for various factions. I mentioned Wyman Manderly already, and Meereen (The March on Winterfell, 34) is a new kind of card advantage engine that I expect to make waves in Targaryen decks, particularly those focused around discard pile synergy. The new version of The Wall (The March on Winterfell, 26) is an expensive but powerful location that pushes a deck stealing an opponent’s characters—very different than the original defense-focused Wall.

Most of all, I’m excited to see how shadows does! We’re still probably too early in the cycle for some of the more dedicated shadows-based cards—such as The Queen of Thorns (The March on Winterfell, 23) or The Shadow City (The Shadow City, 17)—to come into their own, but I still expect to see plenty of shadows cards running around.

Q: Are there any “unknowns” in the current meta you’re hoping to gain some insight on from the event?

My biggest question is whether any factions can challenge the “big three” of Targaryen, Martell, and Tyrell. While there’s no doubt that those three are powerful, I know that top players will be playtesting intently and looking for new ways to attack the metagame. As I mentioned, Stark is one of the factions that I think can mount a serious challenge to the top decks. Greyjoy is another faction that has a good mix of disruptive cards and the ability to apply pressure in challenges, making them an interesting contender. Honestly, I wouldn’t be too surprised to see any of the lower-tier factions make waves in the tournament. I’m excited to see what players build!

Michael Boggs on Android: Netrunner

Q: What’s your prediction for a winning deck?

For the Runner, I believe that a run-based Criminal deck has a pretty good chance of winning. For the Corp, my bet is either on Mti Mwekundu (Kampala Ascendant, 114) or The Outfit (Reign and Reverie, 50).

Q: If you see those decks as your favorite, what’s a dark horse or X-factor deck that you feel has an outside chance of surprising everyone?

The mini-factions gained a nice boost from Reign and Reverie. They’ve always been the underdog, but I think people should keep an eye out for them.

Q: Are there any new cards from recent sets you’re looking forward to seeing in action?

Yes! Both the Kitara cycle and Reign and Reverie have been well received by the community. I expect to see a whole host of cards from those two sets, and would be especially happy if someone brings a Saraswati Mnemonics (Reign and Reverie, 34) deck.

Tyler Parrott on Star Wars™: The Card Game

Q: What’s your prediction for a winning deck?

It seems crazy, but the Ewok Swarm deck still seems almost impossible to defeat with traditional dark side strategies. The ability to generate free units with Spark of Rebellion (Galactic Ambitions, 1114) and Logray (Swayed by the Dark Side, 2139), and then keep them around with Native Blessings (Swayed by the Dark Side, 2138) means that the dark side can be facing a very intimidating board as early as turn one, and very few dark side decks have the ability to move fast enough to compete.

For the dark side, the Promise of Power (Allies of Necessity, 2073) Night deck continues to be very effective. The affiliation card allowing Energy Spiders (New Alliances, 956) to fight turn after turn means that it has the ability to close out a game quickly, and the combination of other hard-hitting units gives enough ways to damage enemy units that the light side can’t build up a sustained offense. There's such a variety of styles of this deck that even if you see the key objectives at the start, you can't be certain what the deck might throw at you.

Q: What’s a dark horse or X-factor deck that you feel has an outside chance of surprising everyone?

While it's not a consistent deck, I believe that writing off Light Side Pilots as a deck is a mistake. Leopold Hess proved that the deck can make it to the top tables back in 2015, and Andy Hornby piloted a similar build to the Top 8 of Worlds this past May. The ability to strike multiple times with a Rogue Squadron X-Wing can put a lot of early damage on dark side objectives, which cleanly sets up a Rebel Assault (Core Set, 108) victory once the dark side has stabilized. And if the dark side does build up an efficient defense, well… Trench Run (Core Set, 150) does say "win the game" on it.

I don't think it qualifies as a dark horse deck at this point, considering it won the European Championships, but a hyperaggressive Imperial Navy deck can also be a contender. When the deck features cards this efficient at destroying objectives, it's not difficult to close out a fast game by destroying four objectives before the light side has the opportunity to destroy three. If the light side decks that come to Gen Con aren't prepared to commit completely towards offense or defense, then a poor draw—or a miscalculated play—could easily see the field lose to this aggressive juggernaut.

The 2018 May World Championships have now concluded. This pinnacle of our Organized Play Star Wars™ programs culminated in spectacular finales across each of our competitive Star Wars games.

Many dice were rolled, many cards were played, and hundreds of players from across the world enjoyed five days of intense competition—filled with fantastic plays, and capped by the coronation of five new World Champions.

A Grand Farewell

A Look at the Star Wars™: The Card Game European and North American Championships

Since 2012, Star Wars™: The Card Game has entertained fans with its unique deck-building challenges, thrilling edge battles, and changing tones ranging from drama to comedy. Now the game's production has come to a close, and though we know players will continue to enjoy the way the LCG® interprets the Galactic Civil War for many years to come, Fantasy Flight Games Organized Play will soon arrive at its completion, as well.

We will be saying farewell at our final competitive events—the European Championships and the North American Championships, held at the UK Games Expo and Gen Con Indy, respectively.

Organized Play has been an integral part of Star Wars: The Card Game from its beginning. The game was first presented to the attendees of the 2012 World Championships. We have seen six World Championships, one European Championship, and two North American Championships—all of which crowned champions who have had their legacies fused with that of the game itself.

Champion Cards

As with all of our competitive LCGs, Star Wars: The Card Game—at its apex—has featured The Greatest Prize in Gaming: the chance to inspire the design of a card. Some of these cards have already appeared in the game.

Vader's Meditation Chamber — 2013 World Champion Dennis Harlien
Kyle Katarn — 2014 World Champion Mick Cipra
Wookiee Champion — 2015 World Champion Tom Melucci

Several other cards, however, were designed only after the game's conclusion had been announced. These cards were awarded to attendees at the 2018 Star Wars: The Card Game World Championships—and they will be awarded to each participant of the 2018 European and North American Championships!

Darth Vader — 2016 World Champion Brad Emon
It’s Beautiful — 2017 World Champion Mick Cipra
K-2SO — 2017 European Champion Pawel Zochowski
Profundity — 2017 North American Champion James Lau

All of these cards feature the new Replacement keyword, which alters the normal deckbuilding rules to allow these cards to be included in a deck without being part of an objective set. You simply remove a card with the same sequential number from another objective set and replace it with this new card. In this way, these cards open an astonishing range of deckbuilding options that you and your friends can pursue in casual games.

Each attendee at the 2018 European and North American Championships will receive a complete playset of the completed cards—sharing in the legacies of the champions who created them and continuing the legacy of the game itself. None of these cards will be legal for those tournaments or other official Organized Play events. A downloadable PDF of these cards will be made available online later this year.

Participation

The champion cards are one of our ways of saying thanks to the community and the champions who have made this game great, but they're not the only prizes you'll receive at the 2018 European or North American Championships. In fact, they're not even the only participation prize.

In addition to the complete set of champion cards, each participant at the 2018 European and North American Championships will receive an extended art copy of the complete May the Force Be With You objective set.

That means you'll get full-bleed art on each card in the popular Jedi set: May the Force Be With You; Yoda; Dagobah Nudj; Dagobah Training Grounds; Yoda, You Seek Yoda; and Seeds of Decay.

If your deck has this objective set, you'll be able to swap in the cards right away. You'll feel like you've been to Dagobah, completed your training, and are now ready to confront Darth Vader!

Day 2

Everyone who makes the cut for Day 2 will find Yoda making yet another appearance. The wizened Jedi Master features on the light side of a double-sided plastic Force card. Emperor Palpatine menaces your opponent from atop the card's dark side face.

Each player who qualifies for Day 2 at either the 2018 European or North American Championships will receive three copies of this double-sided plastic Force card.

Top 64

Play your way into the Top 64 at the Star Wars: The Card Game 2018 European or North American Championships, and you'll receive another prize designed to make your continued play more enjoyable—a complete set of acrylic tokens.

For making the Top 64, you'll receive twenty tokens—six each of the game's focus token and shield token, as well as five one-damage tokens and three three-damage tokens. All of these come on a stylish mirrored silver background.

Top 32

Make the Top 32, and you'll receive a commemorative binder to that will stand testament to your performance even as it helps you sort and store all the prize cards you've already received.

Proudly displaying either the European Championship or North American Championship atop a blue background layered with the appropriate flags, this binder holds nine standard-sized cards per page and up to 360 cards total. An elastic fastener wraps over the back to keep it shut securely.

Top 16

The Top 16 participants at the Star Wars: The Card Game European Championship and North American Championship will receive a medal bearing the event's logo.

Top 8

Reach the Top 8, and you'll receive a playmat that ensures the Force will be with you—always. Emblazoned with the name of your event—either the 2018 European Championships or 2018 North American Championships—this playmat offers a fantastic look at the art from the May the Force Be With You objective and tops it off with a symbol that proudly displays your placement at the event, whether that's the Top 8, Top 4, 2nd place, or 1st place.

Top 4

Given how challenging it will be to emerge victorious from all the battles of the European and North American Championships, there can be little doubt that the Top 4 players will all be strong with the Force—and as the Force binds all things together, we'll hope to see them all competing for the top honors at the 2019 World Championships for one of our other Star Wars games!

For their efforts, each of these players will earn a free event ticket for the 2019 Star Wars World Championship tournament of their choice.

Runner-Up

The Runners-Up at the European and North American Championships each also earn a commemorative plaque in addition to their free event entry.

Champion

The greatest of Jedi never fully leave the Star Wars galaxy. They become one with the Force! Accordingly, the winners of the Star Wars: The Card Game European and North American Championships will each find themselves able to manifest in another of our Star Wars games.

Capping off all the other prizes they've won over the course of the weekend, the European Champion and North American Champion each win a flight and lodging for the 2019 World Championship tournament for another Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars game of his or her choice.

We look forward to seeing these champions wielding the Force in their new settings!

The European Champion and North American Champion also win a reserved seat and free event entry for one guest each.

The Force Will Be With You… Always

The 2018 European Championship and 2018 North American Championship will be the final showcase events for Star Wars: The Card Game and its Organized Play. After these events, the Organized Play team will take its leave, and you will be the last of the Jedi. It will be up to you to pass on what you have learned.

The 2018 May World Championships are now just a few weeks away, and they promise five great days of gaming for everyone in attendance.

Players from around the globe will be converging on the Fantasy Flight Games Center to compete in the World Championships for five of the Star Wars galaxy's greatest games—Star Wars™: Armada, Star Wars™: The Card Game, Star Wars™: Destiny, Star Wars™: Imperial Assault, and X-Wing™.

We'll witness top-tier innovation, skill, and competition. We'll find players dominating their games with surprising decks, squads, and armies. We'll watch dramatic turns of fortunes as big games are decided by desperate gambles. And we'll share the action with you—live as it unfolds—on our Twitch stream (Twitch.TV/FFGlive).

Duels for the Fate of the Galaxy

Why World Champion Mick Cipra Loves Star Wars™: The Card Game

While the coming 2018 May World Championships won't see the end of Star Wars™: The Card Game, they will see the rise of its final World Champion. As we announced in January, the final Force Pack from the Alliances cycle, Promise of Power, will also be the last of the game's Force Packs, and the 2018 World Championship will be the game's last.

So what might we see from the game's final World Championship? Will we see a villainous mastermind manipulate the metagame to his advantage, rising through the field almost unnoticed until he pronounces himself Emperor? Will we watch some rogue blast through the field at lightspeed, masterfully piloting her way to the finals? Or will the World Championships close upon a heroic final duel in which the World Champion uses the Force in some surprising fashion to emerge victorious?

Likely, those of us who follow the results at the event and via social media will find a measure of all these things—clever schemes, daring gambles, and Force mastery. After all, they've long been a part of the game, shaping it and the unique experience it offers its players.

Two-Time World Champion Mick Cipra on Star Wars: The Card Game

It is, of course, bittersweet when I think of the upcoming World Championships for Star Wars: The Card Game. It will be great to see so many friends again for five days of gaming, but it is also the last World Championship tournament for our game. I’ve participated in every World Championship tournament since Star Wars: The Card Game came out. Each one has changed my view of what the game is—and what it can be—but this last one… This last one will push everyone to their limits, and it will be amazing.

I love Star Wars: The Card Game. There are three things it does that no other game comes close to and why it’s simply irreplaceable in my heart—objective sets, the alternating strikes and resolution of combat icons, and edge battles. Whoever wishes to take The Greatest Prize in Gaming™ will certainly have to be a master of all three.

Objective Sets

Objective sets were the bold and controversial move that defined Eric Lang’s design of the game. I think they’re awesome; they completely change how you think and talk about cards. Whenever you’re in a discussion with another player about the merits of a single card you’re actually in a discussion about five other cards as well. No card stands by itself in this game, and as a player you must view every card as part of a constellation. Sometimes the constellation fades, and sometimes there’s a new card that revitalizes an old objective set by introducing a new interaction.

If you want the Rebel Saboteurs for their Interrupt ability, you need to consider if the rest of their objective set fits in your deck.

After five years of development, there are a lot of objective sets out there. Will the players at the World Championships stick with what is known and powerful? Or will we see some older sets being dusted off after an innovator has decided that the time has finally come?

During the Regional Championship season, we’ve seen a lot of players experimenting with the new cards from the Alliances cycle. Tom Melucci’s Wookiee set adds additional power to Chewbacca from Wookiee Life Debt (Edge of Darkness, 69–1), which also combines nicely with Desert Recruitment (Desperate Circumstances, 270–1).

I think the main choice players will be torn between at this World Championship is which of the new affiliation cards to run, or even to run any of them. The 2017 World Championship was dominated by mono-affiliation Navy and Dark Lord of the Sith decks on the dark side, but at this World Championship, we should expect to see a lot of split decks. Promise of Power (Allies of Necessity, 2073) is particularly potent as it makes it almost impossible for the light side to lock down an enemy board. It also combos very well with the Energy Spiders in The Spice Trade (New Alliances, 195–1) giving the dark side player two fantastically under-costed units that can keep going turn after turn.

The idea that objective sets are constellations of cards also reinforces the fact that Star Wars: The Card Game is a game of information. As soon as your opponent flops his or her starting objectives you know thirty percent of the deck you're facing. After the first turn, you probably know fifty to sixty percent of what you'll face. By the end of the second turn, you'll know nearly all of what's in your opponent's deck. This is crucial information that lets you know what kind of combat tricks to expect as you can count exactly what cards and how many copies your opponent has remaining. There’s a reason near the end of the game the top players in the cut are always looking through their opponents' discard piles… Which brings me to my next point: Edge battles!

Edge Battles

Ok, I skipped ahead to my third point, but I’ve always been more of an abstract random thinker than a concrete sequential one. Edge battles are the lifeblood of Star Wars: The Card Game. Whoever wins the edge battle will strike first, and all their units in the engagement will be more powerful. Problem is: neither player knows who will win the edge battle until the stacks are revealed, and losing an edge battle can be catastrophic, depending on the board. It is quite the thrill!

The edge mechanic is awesome for several reasons. There’s a high amount of risk analysis that goes into every edge battle, but these battles also lead into another defining aspect of the game that often blows players’ minds when they’re coming from any other customizable card game—they define your card draw. At the start of your turn, you get to draw up to your hand size of six cards. The number of cards in your hand size can change, but every turn presents myriad choices about how to play, keep, or pitch your cards—and the options keep coming turn after turn after turn. Pitching cards in edge battles is one of the key ways you can thin your deck to see the cards you really want to see.

Tossing The Prince's Scheme into your edge stack might not be a good move if you don't have a unique Scum character in the battle, but sometimes you just need to draw—and in this case, cycling that third card allows you to draw the Emperor.

It was also pointed out to me years ago that one of the key skills a player must develop in Star Wars: The Card Game is identifying which edge battles are actually important. Some edge battles are simply irrelevant, while others are risky for one player but not the other. Occasionally, however, you will find those edge battle that decide the fate of the galaxy. If players blow their good edge cards in edge battles that are low risk, they may not have the hand they need on a future turn. Other times, players will want to engage in edge battles simply to pitch cards out of their hands so that they can dig for the cards they really want to see.

Having a game plan for the important edge battles is something players at the World Championships have to have in mind when they create their decks. I’ve long been a subscriber to the idea that a deck should have two to three “aces” for clinching the important edge battles. Traditionally, this means Twist of Fate , but by this point in the game, the options have expanded.

The light side still has the classic Millennium Falcon set (Edge of Darkness, 72–2), which comes with both Edge 1 and a Twist, but now light side players also have three varieties of Speeder Bikes and Captain Rex (Desperate Circumstances, 271–2) for additional Edge. Also, the timing of Teamwork (Allies of Necessity, 261–5) will catch a number of dark side players off-guard and have them kicking themselves.

For the dark side there’s still Twist of Fate, but a number of the classic objective sets that run it have fallen out of fashion. Very few players run the old staple Counsel of the Sith (Core Set, 20–1) anymore, despite its fantastic card draw and edge capabilities. The Tatooine Crash (Edge of Darkness, 82–1) has also fallen out of fashion, although it has found new life in a few decks with Vader's Army (Aggressive Negotiations, 267–1).

Last year, the Imperial Navy relied on the strength of the two Twists from their two copies of The Tarkin Doctrine (Imperial Entanglements, 178–1) and the Edge potency of an army of Gladiator-class Star Destroyers (So Be It, 1000) to hold back the light side, but with the introduction of the "Starting Reserve: 7" affiliation cards and new card draw options for the light side, a number of players have given up on even trying to compete in edge battles as the dark side. Some players will opt for dark side aggro lists that don’t really even care about Edge battles. Others will slot in Guri (Jump to Lightspeed, 170–2) to punish the light side for winning the edge battle.

Combat Resolution

Once an edge battle resolves it comes time for players to alternate focusing their units to strike.

I love this mechanic for two reasons—the decision tree of how to resolve the strikes and the visceral feel of resolving them. In most situations there’s a “correct” order for how a player should resolve strikes in order to eke out the maximum amount of damage, but sometimes a player must choose between opening up further attacks or keeping their units alive—to secure board position or push for the final blast. The choices involved in these strikes keep the game complex, and any slip-up can hand a game to your opponent.

This year, I look forward to seeing how the new fate card Allies of Necessity (Allies of Necessity, 2079) changes the resolution of combat icons. It will be particularly interesting to see how players allocate the black gun and black blast to their units during the Edge battle when they know that they’re going to the lose the Edge battle and will not strike first.

The other reason I love resolving combat icons is that it is fun to see who exactly is doing what on the battlefield. Of course, it’s fun to lock down the entire rebel fleet with Emperor Palpatine (Core Set, 23–2) and his tactics icons, or to obliterate the Executor (The Forest Moon, 200–2) in one strike with Yoda (Join Us or Die, 112–2). But for me that’s not nearly as much fun as taking down the Chimaera (Imperial Entanglements, 179–2) with Jawa Warriors (Trust in the Force, 2173), or going to battle with Luke’s T-16 Skyhopper (Technological Terror, 256–2) and Yoda’s favorite lizard (Join Us or Die, 112–3), bidding four Allies of Necessity, and taking out the Emperor and an objective in one go. There’s a certain glee that Star Wars: The Card Game players get the more ridiculous the situation becomes, and as a community we’ve grown to revel in it.

There are, of course, many more aspects to Star Wars: The Card Game that you'll see come together at the World Championships, but I tried to touch on the elements that are unique to the game. Whenever the top players play against each other, you can expect to find their duels fueled by intimate knowledge of the objective set system, edge battle risk analysis, and combat icon resolution feature prominently in their games.

The Order of Inquisitors

Throughout the first season of Star Wars: Rebels, the Lothal rebels are haunted by the menacing Grand Inquisitor. As the series progresses, however, they learn of an entire order of Inquisitors—all dedicated to stamping out the remains of the Jedi. Now, with Promise of Power, you can bring this terrifying dark side force to your games.

Your journey into darkness starts with this set’s objective— Order of Inquisitors (Promise of Power, 2195). This objective has a simple effect that can help you bring your forces into play: you simply reduce the cost of the first Inquisitor card you play each turn by one. Four Inquisitor cards in the set give you plenty of options for using the cost reduction. And as we’ll see, your Inquisitors can work quite well together.

The Seventh Sister (Promise of Power, 2196) is a fearsome combatant. Between the elite keyword and a good array of combat icons, she’s already worth her weight, but she’s even more valuable for the way that she makes your opponent approach the edge battle. Whenever The Seventh Sister is attacking, edge battles look radically different. Instead of alternating playing edge cards, your opponent must first put any number of edge cards into their edge stack. Then, after you’ve seen how many cards your opponent commits, you can choose how many cards you want to place in your own edge stack!

If it looks like your opponent has dumped most of their hand into the edge stack, you can mitigate your losses or wipe away your opponent’s efforts with a Twist of Fate. Or, if your opponent only commits a single card, it may be easy for you to tip the edge battle in your favor. No matter how your opponent chooses to act, The Seventh Sister is a powerful tool for upsetting your opponent’s plans.

Two other Inquisitors arise to stand beside The Seventh Sister as you pursue the goals of the dark side. The Fifth Brother (Promise of Power, 2197) and The Eighth Brother (Promise of Power, 2198) can both be lethal in pitched battle, and they both receive rewards based on units leaving play. Whenever The Eighth Brother leaves play, you can deal a damage to any unit, and whenever an Inquisitor unit leaves play, you can remove a focus token from The Fifth Brother!

Of course, you’ll be able to trigger these abilities when one of your Inquisitors is defeated, but it’s much more powerful if you have a way to trigger them whenever you choose. Fortunately, Double-bladed Lightsaber (Promise of Power, 2199) is just the tool that you need. This Weapon enhancement grants another unit damage icon, and more importantly, it allows you to return the enhanced unit and Double-bladed Lightsaber to your hand at any time! With the Double-bladed Lightsaber, you can strike and disappear before your opponent can return fire.

Finally, this objective set concludes with a way to harness the power of the Inquisitors and interfere with your opponent’s plans. Press For Answers (Promise of Power, 2200) is an event that reads, “Action: Look at the top X cards of your opponent’s deck. Discard 1 of those cards and return the others to the top of the owner’s deck in any order. X is the number of unique Character units you control.” By using your Inquisitors to put fear in the heart of the light side player, you can control their plans and gain insight into what they might try to do next.

A New Star Wars™: The Card Game FAQ is Now Available

The latest version of the Star Wars™: The Card Game FAQ is now online! This update contains the usual clarifications, updates, new questions, and other minor changes that come with refining the rules. In addition, today’s update includes a couple rules changes and an update to the restricted list that tournament players should be sure to read about. Learn why these changes were made directly from the developer in the paragraphs below, and then download the new FAQ to see all the changes for yourself!

FAQ Update

This update to Star Wars: The Card Game is intended to set the stage for the upcoming World Championship in May. The goal of this update is to ensure that the rules are coordinated with the most recent product releases and the metagame remains as enjoyable as possible!

To that end, we have cleaned up a pair of rules and added a few groups to the restricted list.

Rules Changes

The first rules change clarifies the wording surrounding damage, so that card text works as intended. The word “dealt” in regards to damage now operates with its expected English meaning, rather than having the specific meaning of “damage that has already made it onto the card.” This reversal does not change any card interactions except for that of Confronting the Terror (Assault on Echo Base, 255), which will now redirect all damage from a single source back to that source’s controller.

The second rules change is a reversal of a previous ruling regarding blank enhancements. If an enhancement’s text box is made blank, it is no longer discarded. An enhancement will only be discarded if its attachment conditions are contradicted, not if they cease to exist. This clears up the inconsistency between enhancements that attach to other cards and enhancements that attach to the play area.

Restricted List Updates

The light side Restricted Group 5 has been updated. This was originally created to break up two of the most powerful light side Jedi objective sets: May the Force Be With You (Join Us or Die, 567) and Spark of Rebellion (Galactic Ambitions, 1114). A third card is being added to this group, so that it cannot be played with either objective set: the Guardians of Justice affiliation card (Allies of Necessity, 2063). The consistency of May the Force Be With You, the explosive potential of Spark of Rebellion, and the edge advantage of Guardians of Justice have proven to be too dominant in the tournament metagame. Aspiring Jedi players will have to choose which of the three powerful effects they wish to leverage in their battles against the Empire.

A new restricted group is being added to the light side as Restricted Group 6. This group contains Fleeing the Empire (Core Set, 56) and Sacrifice at Endor (Between the Shadows, 652). Funeral Pyre (Between the Shadows, 654) is a powerful card, but it is limited by a requirement of focusing to trigger its ability, while Leia Organa's (Core Set, 88) powerful refreshing ability is mitigated by the inconsistency of when it can be triggered. Funeral Pyre mitigates Leia’s inconsistency and Leia mitigates Funeral Pyre’s once-per-turn-cycle limitation. In addition to allowing players to completely dictate which Characters get to participate in a turn, it has enabled an effective late-game infinite combo alongside Rescue Mission (Core Set, 117) that removed interaction from the game.

The last restricted group added to the light side is Restricted Group 7. This one breaks up another powerful Jedi combination: Matter Under Mind (The Forest Moon, 959) and Running the Canyon (Technological Terror, 2040). These two sets have been paired to great effect, as Brainiac (The Forest Moon, 960) is able to alter the text of Luke’s T-16 Skyhopper (Technological Terror, 2041) to make it deal two objective damage with the first light side event played each turn. When combined with Memories of Home (Technological Terror, 2043) in the Skyhopper’s objective set, the three cards have allowed light side players to deal four damage to dark side objectives each turn cycle without ever attacking, so long as they can hold the Force. While some amount of direct pressure is valuable for a game, this combination is too effective at allowing the light side player to win without participating in the most interactive part of the game: engagements.

One restricted pod has also been added to the dark side in the wake of the release of the final pack. Dark Side Restricted Group 5 contains I Don’t Like You, Either (A Wretched Hive, 1167) and Double-Crossing Droid (Promise of Power, 2205), breaking up the same two cards that were restricted in Restricted Group 3. Using I Don’t Like You Either to copy an event, Chain Reaction (Promise of Power, 632) to copy the objective’s ability, and the objective to copy Chain Reaction again, a Scum player can conceivably resolve a single event four times (or an opponent’s event three times). As this interaction only costs one card, one resource, and four objective damage, it has proven too efficient and remains on the restricted list.

This update will help keep the game diverse for everyone attending the World Championships next month and will hopefully carry into the final tournament season in the summer and fall.

Learn More About the Side Events at the 2018 May World Championships

"Well, if there’s a bright center to the universe, you’re on the planet that it’s farthest from."

There's an unintentional irony to Luke's claim that Tatooine was the planet farthest from the "bright center" of the Star Wars galaxy. Yes, Tatooine was a remote, Outer Rim desert planet, and Luke knew precious little of its history or the legacy that he would help establish for the planet as a home to some of the Galactic Civil War's most important encounters.

But even before Luke—and those watching him from the audience—would realize the full sweep of Tatooine's place within the larger Star Wars saga, we realized one thing: the planet was wild, dangerous, strange, and thrilling. Tatooine was a place where anything could happen. Tusken Raiders could ambush you. You could meet a hermetic Jedi Master. You could get into a deadly brawl in a seedy cantina.

And here's why this matters: this May 2nd – 6th, the 2018 May World Championships are coming to Roseville, MN. And right at the middle of the action—in the center of the spotlight, at the center of the galaxy—you'll find the World Championships for Star Wars™: Armada, Star Wars™: The Card Game, Star Wars™: Destiny, Star Wars™: Imperial Assault, and X-Wing™. But outside of the spotlight, at the tables farthest from the bright center of this event, you'll find a number of side events where anything can happen…

A Legacy of Fun

The Galactic Civil War wasn't won on Tatooine, but the planet's legacy runs deep through the Star Wars saga through its influence on many of the Galactic Civil War's most notable figures—Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo, and Jabba the Hutt. Similarly, the battles from the 2018 May World Championships side events won't find their way into the history books, but they will influence your experience of the larger event.

After all, the 2018 May World Championships are more than a chance to play your favorite Star Wars games at the very highest level; they're a five-day celebration of the Star Wars galaxy's greatest tabletop gaming!

Accordingly, there's something for everyone at these side events. Every game is accompanied by at least one side event that's free to enter, and World Championship attendees are encouraged to play in these events—even for the games that they may only play casually.

The side events schedule has already been posted and is available below. Also available now are the event descriptions, which provide the information you need in order to prepare an event-legal deck, army, squad, or fleet. These descriptions will present you a better idea of what you might expect from the different formats—such as the X-Wing Team Epic event or the Imperial Assault 4 Player event.

In addition to the free events that you'll find for each of the games, the 2018 May World Championships will feature an ongoing series of "On Demand" events for X-Wing and Star Wars: Destiny.

You'll find Hangar Bay Events for X-Wing on Friday and Saturday, and fans of Star Wars: Destiny can find On Demand pods running Wednesday through Saturday. Whether you use these events as an excuse to test new decks, fly a squadron of four T-65 X-wings, or put your Rivals Draft Set to good use, they all offer you a chance to enjoy the challenges presented by new formats.

After all, you can choose a Destiny pod for the Standard or Trilogy constructed formats, or enter the Draft or Sealed events. Likewise, the Hangar Bay Event comes with its own unique restrictions. As with the Hangar Bay Events taking place at this year's System Open Series events, you'll have the option to bring two squad lists to the table, and then you'll have the chance to look at your opponent's lists before you choose which of yours to play. And as in the System Open Series, the squads for these Hangar Bay Events must use the "skilled rule," which states that the printed pilot skill values of your pilots must differ from list to list.

Of course, what makes the Hangar Bay Event really special—and the alternate Star Wars: Destiny formats—is that the alternate format doesn't just encourage new list-building; it leads to a wholly different play experience.

You'll fly pilots that you might otherwise miss. You'll draft supports that roll damage, but play more slowly than your games of Star Wars: Destiny usually do. Even in the constructed Trilogy events, you might find yourself inclined to make more use of the newer mechanics—plots and indirect damage—than you normally would.

And when you participate in these side events, the result is that your experience at the 2018 May World Championships is more rounded and energizing than if you were to come and focus entirely on the top-level challenges of the World Championship tournaments. Certainly, those battles will hold the spotlight. Everyone's coming for the top-level competition. But when you go home, you'll bring more energy back to your local playgroup—and you'll be more fully inspired to start dabbling in new tactics—if you've already shared in the laughs and smiles and crazy experimental tactics from the year's side events.

Learn What Lies Ahead for Star Wars™: The Card Game Organized Play

Twilight is upon us, and night must fall. But there's still time to complete your training. There's still time to reach out and feel the Force. There's still time to participate in Star Wars™: The Card Game Organized Play.

For months, the Alliances cycle has given you the chance to explore the possibilities inherent in decks with two or more affiliations. New affiliation cards have encouraged more creative designs. We've seen powerful units from the original trilogy joined by the most recognizable characters from Rogue One and Marvel's Darth Vader comics. And soon, as we announced in January, Promise of Power will bring the cycle—and the game—to their climactic conclusions.

That means the 2018 May World Championships will see the game's final World Championships… but they will not see the game's last event. There is another. In fact, there are several more:

2018 Season One Organized Play

As players everywhere are well aware, the Alliances cycle has been unleashing a fantastic array of deck design options, and experimenting with all the new designs will take you at least a full season. That means there's plenty of reason to keep diving deeper into the game's Organized Play events, to meet up with your friends, unleash the power of your Sith, coordinate your Rebellion, or grip the galaxy so tight with your Imperial Navy that you choke the hope right out of the Rebel upstarts!

Of course, the arrival of a new season of Organized Play heralds the arrival of new prizes, and the prizes for the season's Twist of Fate tournaments feature a wealth of cards and tokens designed to inspire fear in your opponents… and help you master your own fear.

Among the prizes, you'll find an alternate view of the Empire, a riveting look at an assassin droid in action, and a chance to focus with all the strength of a Jedi. Best yet, the prizes cover all of the Top 16 places at each event, meaning you don't even have to make the top tables to claim your share!

As the final World Championships for Star Wars: The Card Game, the 2018 World Championships promise to be an epic event. There will be one final tournament. Climactic confrontations between Jedi and Sith, between Imperials and Rebels—all leading toward one final Champion. One final legacy.

Will you be the one to claim this final World Champion title and the glory and prizes that go with it? If so, you'll need to apply for your ticket by February 21st. You'll also need to stay on top of the new Alliances cycle metagame, refine your deck, hone your instincts, and learn both patience and control. This is a game, after all, in which players jostle back and forth, trying to tease their opponents into making a slight mistake—any misplay that can open a defensive gap—and then you pounce, striking with lightsabers, Stormtroopers, Droids, Star Destroyers, Ewoks, and anything and everything that might pile on the pressure.

While all this year's World Championship participants will enjoy a wealth of custom prizes, only one will go on to become the Champion, and while that player will not be able to help design a card for a future product, he or she will still be able to work with developers to design a card—a prize card that can be slotted as a replacement into any objective set.

Additionally, the 2018 World Champion will receive a seat, flight, and accommodations to the 2019 World Championships for the Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars game of his or her choice.

There's nothing that can directly replace the sweeping, orchestral scope of Star Wars: The Card Game, nor its edge battles, or the back-and-forth dance as players seek the moment to commit their forces in full. But the Star Wars galaxy is a vast place, full of the possibility for adventure. The Star Wars saga continues. And a player as skilled as the Star Wars: The Card Game World Champion will likely be able to convert his or her skills toward success in the duels of Star Wars™: Destiny, the dogfights of X-Wing™, the epic fleet battles of Star Wars™: Armada, the tense skirmishes of Star Wars™: Imperial Assault, or the heated infantry battles of Star Wars™: Legion.

Finally, because there will be no Star Wars™: The Card Game National Championships in 2018, any World Championship attendees who present their 2018 Star Wars: The Card Game National Championship bye cards will be able to redeem them for an amazing playmat—one that boldly embodies the power and wonder that reside at the heart of Fantasy Flight Games Organized Play in the Star Wars universe!

2018 European and North American Championships

After all the action of Season One, there are two final shots at top-tier comeptitive play for the aspiring Jedi, Sith, generals, admirals, and crime lords on either side of the Atlantic.

The 2018 European Championships will run June 2nd – June 3rd at the UK Games Expo in Birmingham.
The 2018 North American Championships will take place at Gen Con Indy.

As the final competitive events for Star Wars: The Card Game, the 2018 European and North American Championships will echo throughout the galaxy—and throughout the ages. Join with the game's other die-hard fans, and try to conquer them one last time!

Like the other European and North American Championship events, these will offer their Champions the chance to work with the Organized Play team to select a card to receive an alternate art treatment. This card can be chosen from one of the other Star Wars games supported by Fantasy Flight Games Organized Play.

Like the 2018 Star Wars: The Card Game World Champion, the 2018 European Champion and 2018 North American Champion will earn a seat, travel, and accommodations for the 2019 World Championship tournaments for the Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars games of their choice.

Additionally, participants in the 2018 European and North American Championships can redeem their Star Wars: The Card Game National Championship bye cards for the same playmat available at the World Championships.

Finally, as a thank you to all the players who have supported Star Wars: The Card Game through the years, we will award a special participation prize to all attendees at the 2018 European and North American Championships—two copies each of a selection of champion cards. Like the card design inspired by the 2018 Star Wars: The Card Game World Champion, these cards will be able to slot into any objective set. This May 2nd – 6th, you'll find these conflicts—and more—exploding onto the tables of the 2018 May World Championships!

Hosted at the Fantasy Flight Games Center in Roseville, MN, the 2018 May World Championships feature the world's top players for five of our Star Wars games:

Attend these five days of top-tier Star Wars gaming, and you'll find fast-paced duels of dice and cards. You'll find X-wings screaming into action against TIE fighters. Capital ships bombard each other amidst swarms of fighters and bombers. Teams of Rebels, Imperials, and mercenaries race through narrow corridors and peek around corners.

You'll witness dramatic turns of fortune, see far-reaching plans come together at the last possible moment, learn how the Force flows through all things… and find yourself in contention for a wide array of exclusive prizes!

What Are the Prizes?

As the pinnacle of Fantasy Flight Games Organized Play, the 2018 May World Championships will feature both the world's greatest competitors and some of the world's greatest prizes.

Everyone who attends will receive an array of participation prizes. Likewise, all participants will have the chance to spend prize tickets to claim the goodies available on the event's prize wall. And, of course, you stand to win additional prizes when you can string together a number of victories in your favorite game's World Championships.

STAR WARS: Armada

Star Wars: Armada is a game of massive battleships, thunderous battles, and visionary tactics, and the prizes for the 2018 Armada World Championships celebrate the game's layered identity.

Participation

In addition to the World Championship Card Binder and pack of 100 World Championship card sleeves, each Star Wars: Armada participant receives a black Star Wars: Armada 2018 World Championship t-shirt, ten Prize Tickets, and an alternate art version of the Leia Organa commander card.

A central figure in the Star Wars saga, Leia has played many roles—spy, diplomat, tactician, and soldier, just to name a few. In the artwork on this card, we find Leia, the leader who inspired countless Rebels to believe they could prevail against the Galactic Empire and its monolithic military.

The Rebellion needed other heroes. It needed strategies, and it needed weapons. But its victory began with nothing but hope, and few people embodied the Rebellion's hope quite as powerfully as Leia Organa.

Prize Wall

This year's prize wall will feature a number of cards and prize items that have formerly appeared in previous Organized Play kits. It will also feature a new ship card designed especially with Star Wars: Armada in mind—a frosted plastic version of the Gladiator I-class Star Destroyer!

With its ability to race straight into the thick of combat and punish foes with its armament of black dice, the Gladiator I-class Star Destroyer has long been a favorite of Star Wars: Armada players everywhere, and this beautiful card will make your use of the ship all the more memorable.

Command Tokens

Every player who manages to win at least two games in the Star Wars: Armada World Championships earns a complete set of command tokens. These eye-catching tokens feature black print on mirrored gold acrylic, and they make assigning your commands as aesthetically pleasurable as tactically satisfying.

While each player with at least two wins will earn a single set, players can earn a second set of these tokens by managing to win at least three games on Day 1, or claim a third full set by conquering the field with an undefeated record of four wins.

These tokens are also available on the prize wall.

Top 32

The Top 16 players from each Day 1 event in the Armada World Championships will be recognized as part of the game's Top 32 and claim a set of twelve custom attack dice—four of each color: blue, red, and black. Each die mixes its attack color with a distinctive silver swirl.

Top 16

Just like the heroes of the Battle of Yavin IV, each of the Top 16 participants in the Armada World Championships—the Top 8 from each Day 1 event—will receive a stunning commemorative medallion.

Top 8

To join the Top 4 players in either Day 1 event at the Star Wars: Armada World Championships—and make the Top 8 overall—you'll need to steer numerous engagements to your advantage—often by ensuring that the game's most important shots are fired at precisely the range at which you hope to fire them.

You can't win with your fleet of Corellian Corvettes if your opponent catches them point-blank with her Star Destroyer's main battery. And she'll want a plan to punish your ships with all of her Star Destroyer's blue and black attack dice.

Establishing the range of your engagements is vital, and you'll find this fact beautifully reinforced the complete set of custom range rulers and distance templates awarded to each of the Top 8 participants.

Top 4

From the opening crawl of Star Wars: A New Hope, we learned that the Rebel Alliance had just "won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire."

But as we learned in Rogue One, there would have been no victory without the actions of Admiral Raddus and the fleet that he commanded from his flagship, the Profundity. Without the Profundity, the Rebel Alliance wouldn't have secured the Death Star's secret plans, the Galactic Civil War would have ended early, and the fate of young Luke Skywalker might have taken a dramatically different course.

There's little question that Rogue One established the Profundity as one of the most important ships in all of Star Wars, and it flies majestically above the surface of Scarif in the art print awarded to each of the players at the Armada World Championship who advance to the semifinals as one of the Top 2 competitors in their Day 1 events.

Runner-Up

In addition to everything else he or she wins over the course of the Star Wars: Armada World Championships, the 2018 World Championship Runner-Up flies home (or walks or drives) with the Profundity proudly depicted on a World Championship Finalist plaque.

Gaining command of this copy of the Profundity is truly an accomplishment worthy of display!

Champion

In games of Star Wars: Armada, fleet admirals need keen minds to coordinate their ships and squadrons, to recognize their opponents' traps, to set traps that their opponents won't recognize, and to enter engagements with ships powerful enough to obliterate your enemies.

In addition to all the other prizes that the World Champion will claim over the course of the tournament, he or she will win a World Champion trophy; a flight, hotel room, a free seat, and a companion seat for the 2019 World Championships; plus a set of three ship trays boldly displaying the iconography of the mighty Galactic Empire.

Finally, the World Champion wins The Greatest Prize in Gaming, a chance to work with the game's developers to inspire the design of a future card. Josiah Burkhardsmeier inspired the design of Thrawn. Shown orbiting the planet of Scarif—and dwarfing the pair of Star Destroyers flying in front of it—the Death Star was a technological terror with no equal, and its ability to destroy whole planets raised the stakes of the Galactic Civil War.

Immediately iconic, the Death Star was central to the conflicts of Star Wars: A New Hope, and the alternate art by Darren Tan makes it possible to imagine all that the Empire hoped the Death Star would accomplish—as well as the horrible destruction that it wrought on Jedha, Scarif, and Alderaan.

Of course, if you don't have a National Championship bye card to exchange for the playmat, you can still claim a copy by redeeming the appropriate number of prize tickets!

Token Sets

Throughout the game's Swiss rounds, your victories from game to game won't just bring you closer to the elimination rounds—they'll also speed you along the path toward a set of custom tokens, all of which feature black print on mirrored gold acrylic.

Every player who manages to win at least six games (or earns 18 tournament points) will earn a set of six custom shield tokens.
Eight victories (24 points) also earns you a set of six focus tokens.
Ten victories (30 points) allows you to round out your other token sets with five 1-damage tokens and three 3-damage tokens.

Stylish and functional, these tokens are the perfect prize to put to immediate use in your elimination rounds. They are also available on the prize wall.

With a cast of characters that spans the entire Star Wars saga, Star Wars: Destiny is the fantastic, fast-paced "what if?" game of Star Wars duels that allows you to imagine nearly any confrontation you can imagine.

What would happen if Maul teamed up with Agent Kallus to confront Luke Skywalker and Rey? Who would win in a battle between Han Solo and Jango Fett? Could Hondo Ohnaka successfully lead a pair of Jawas against Captain Phasma and her First Order Stormtroopers?

Nearly anything's possible in Star Wars: Destiny, and the prizes for the 2018 Star Wars: Destiny World Championships celebrate the game's imaginative approach to the Star Wars galaxy.

Participation

In addition to the World Championship Card Binder and pack of 100 World Championship card sleeves, each Star Wars: Destiny participant receives a black Star Wars: Destiny 2018 World Championship t-shirt, ten Prize Tickets, and an alternate art version of Emperor Palpatine .

At twenty-eight points for two dice, the Emperor is an army unto himself, and he is more than capable of dealing with his challengers and their insurrections. On this alternate art version of the card, we see the Emperor unleashing a storm of Force lightning, and the evil glee in his expression is entirely unmistakable.

The stunning, full-bleed artwork on this card makes it a pleasure to wield the dark side of the Force against your foes, but should you fall? Well, then the fact that the card features a faded image of Emperor Palpatine on its back may mitigate your sorrows as you flip your card in defeat.

Prize Wall

This year's prize wall will feature a number of cards and prize items that have formerly appeared in previous Organized Play kits. It will also feature an epic addition to the game's collection of alternate art images—a panoramic collection of five Battle Droid cards that can stand side-by-side-by-side to form your entire thirty-point Separatist army.

With art created by JBCasacop, these cards reinforce the fact that your Battle Droids gain strength in numbers. Even if you don't start with one of these droids in play, there's a chance you can deploy entire battalions of them from your Separatist Landing Craft. And if there's any chance you'll send two or more of these droids against your opponents, you'll want to use your prize tickets to pick up these neatly designed new cards.

Swiss Rounds Rewards

The participation prizes aren't the only prizes you can win at the 2018 Destiny World Championships without needing to make the cut to elimination rounds. There are a pair of custom prizes available to all players who manage three or more wins during the tournament's Swiss rounds.

Every player who manages to claim at least three victories will earn a plastic Kanan Jarrus card. Designed around art inspired by Kanan's appearance in Star Wars Rebels, this card is every bit as tough as the Jedi that it lets you bring to your table.
In addition, players who manage to win four or more of their games can claim a set of translucent droideka shield tokens. A stylish alternative to your basic shield tokens, this droideka design is powerful enough to concern even the most seasoned Jedi.

The plastic Kanan Jarrus card and droideka shield tokens are also available on the prize wall.

Top 32

The Top 32 players in the Star Wars: Destiny World Championships will—if they choose—be able to play their elimination rounds atop a playmat that sets the fearsome dark side user Maul against a backdrop of the Sith temple on Malachor.

Top 16

Just like the heroes of the Battle of Yavin IV, each of the Top 16 participants in the Star Wars: Destiny World Championships will receive a stunning commemorative medallion.

Top 8

To join the Top 8 players at the Star Wars: Destiny World Championships, you need to master your timing—you need to use every action in just the right order at just the right time.

Accordingly, each of the Top 8 players at this year's World Championships will win a set of eleven power action tokens—featuring artwork to match the cards they're associated with. Power actions entered the game with the Legacies set of booster packs, and these stylish tokens are a useful tool to help you remember when and if you've used all the actions available to you.

Top 4

As a reminder that Star Wars: Destiny draws its inspiration from the whole Star Wars saga, the Top 4 prize takes us several decades away from the Maul playmat and transports us to the desert sands of Jakku, where we find Rey gazing wistfully in the direction of the setting sun.

This beautiful print features art by Aurore Folny, and it radiates so much warmth and calm that it may very well be the perfect thing to help you relax after a long day of heated dice-and-card battles!

Of course, there is no higher tier of competition than the one you'll find at the 2018 Imperial Assault World Championships, and the available prizes represent a little bit of everything that make this game great!

In addition to the World Championship Card Binder and pack of 100 World Championship card sleeves, each Imperial Assault participant receives a black Star Wars: Imperial Assault 2018 World Championship t-shirt, ten Prize Tickets, and an alternate art version of Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight .

The Force is strong with this version of Luke Skywalker, and his art exudes the confidence that comes with his abilities. No longer just a farm boy from Tatooine, this Jedi Knight can deflect incoming blaster fire with his green lightsaber, cut through enemy armor, and take the fight straight to the enemy—often dispatching multiple foes in a single activation.

Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight was the top Force User at last year's World Championships, and while Darth Vader has been on a rampage lately with his new Driven by Hatred upgrade, this bold and confident version of Luke may still be the light side's greatest hope in a confrontation with the Dark Lord of the Sith!

Prize Wall

This year's prize wall will feature a number of cards and prize items that have formerly appeared in previous Organized Play kits. It will also feature a custom victory point dial—one that might make your march to forty points feel entirely calculated and inevitable.

Featuring art of Grand Admiral Thrawn posing proudly before a trio of Death Troopers, this dial reminds us that we need to enter our games with a winning plan. Take the time to study your opponent, execute your plan, and allow your opponent to win some minor victories—your goal is to win the war… and the game!

Status Tokens

Every player who manages to win at least three games in the Imperial Assault World Championships will earn a set of five status tokens—Hidden, Bleed, Stun, Focus, and Weaken. These eye-catching tokens feature black print on mirrored silver or gold acrylic and add new joys to your beneficial conditions, even while taking some of the sting out of the negative ones.

Each player with a record of 4-2 will earn a single set, players can earn two sets of these tokens by managing to go 5-1 on Day 1, or claim three full sets by conquering the field at 6-0.

These tokens will also be available on the prize wall.

Top 32

The Top 32 players in the Imperial Assault World Championships will claim a set of twelve custom dice—two of each color: blue, red, yellow, green, white, and black. Each die mixes its base color with a distinctive silver swirl.

Top 16

Just like the heroes of the Battle of Yavin IV, each of the Top 16 participants in the Imperial Assault World Championships will receive a stunning commemorative medallion.

Top 8

To fight your way to the Top 8 of the Imperial Assault World Championships, you'll need a solid strategy—one that balances your efforts toward attack, defense, and objective points. You'll need a keen and discerning eye, so that you can spot your opponent's moments of weakness. And once you spy that crack in your opponent's armor, you'll need to commit to your attack.

Above it all, though, you'll need a capable army—one that provides a flexible assortment of speed, resilience, firepower, and sheer numbers. Showing up with a strong army won't guarantee you a win, but showing up with a weak army will almost certainly lead to a loss.

Accordingly, you can be fairly certain that every player in the Top 8 has an army worth showing off, and each of these Top 8 players will be happy to arrange their armies atop the Top 8 playmat—a long and narrow playmat designed to hold your deployment cards and tokens neatly alongside your edge of the play surface.

Top 4

Players who make the Top 4 at the Imperial Assault World Championships should be proud of their accomplishments—perhaps as proud as Grand Admiral Thrawn appears on the art print the players will receive.

This print features the same art piece as the custom point dial that the players will have already won for making the Top 32, but here you'll see the full piece and in vivid color. Frame this print and place it on your wall, or find some other way to display it. But you will want to display it—because this art work, created by Adam Schumpert, offers a vision of the Grand Admiral that fully resonates with his reputation as a shrewd tactical genius.

Runner-Up

In addition to everything else he or she wins over the course of the Imperial Assault World Championships, the 2018 World Championship Runner-Up claims a Finalist plaque with artwork of a combat-ready Ahsoka Tano.

As a padawan, she fought in the Clone Wars. As an intelligence operative, she was crucial to the maturation of the fledgling Rebellion. And as a Rebel leader, she inspired all those around her and saved two of her friends from near-certain death at the hands of Darth Vader.

STAR WARS: X-Wing

At the 2018 X-Wing World Championships, you'll find the galaxy's greatest pilots flying for the Rebellion, the Empire, and the various criminal masterminds aligned with the Scum and Villainy faction. You'll see laser fire flying in all directions, missiles erupting into the sides of enemy ships, and talented aces deftly swerving away from deadly minefields.

With a metagame that's as wide open as it has ever been, X-Wing is absolutely brimming with possibility. But there's one thing that always steers a game in your favor—skill.

Anticipate your opponent's maneuvers. Fly to intercept and take careful aim. You'll want to bring your very best game. There's no higher level of X-Wing competition than you'll find at the World Championships, and the prizes are designed to reflect the skill you'll find on display!

Participation

In addition to the World Championship Card Binder and pack of 100 World Championship card sleeves, each participant in the 2018 X-Wing World Championships receives a black Star Wars: X-Wing 2018 World Championship t-shirt, ten Prize Tickets, and an alternate art version of Fenn Rau .

A Mandalorian ace who fought alongside the Jedi during the Clone Wars, Fenn Rau served Mandalore as the leader of Skull Squadron. After the war, he sided with the newly formed Galactic Empire and continued to serve Mandalore as the leader of the Protectors of Concord Dawn. It was in this position that he first met—and fought against—the members of Phoenix Squadron, who later convinced him to join the Rebel Alliance.

The alternate art verison of Fenn Rau depicts him in his Protectorate starfighter, with the Skull Squadron's symbol proudly displayed on his helmet. Rau's legacy may be muddied by his shifting allegiances, but his skills as a pilot are clear for all to see.

Prize Wall

This year's prize wall will feature a number of cards and prize items that have formerly appeared in previous Organized Play kits. It will also feature a new set of white and red range rulers.

It's always a golden moment when you realize you've flown into your initial engagement exactly as you'd hoped—but that golden moment will be reinforced and rarified as you line up your shot with one of these new range rulers.

Swiss Rounds Rewards

The participation prizes aren't the only prizes you can win at the 2018 X-Wing World Championships without needing to make the cut to elimination rounds. There are a pair of custom prizes available to all players who manage three or more wins during the tournament's Swiss rounds.

Every player who manages to claim at least three victories will earn a plastic card that combines the upgrades from the Protectorate Starfighter Expansion Pack—Fearlessness and Concord Dawn Protector. Whether you use these upgrades to enhance Fenn Rau's combat abilities—or play them with your Concord Dawn Veteran—these upgrades transform your standard Protectorate Starfighter into an absolute terror in tight quarters.
In addition, players who manage to win four or more of their games can claim a set of three ship marker tokens. We've all had to find some way to mark our ship's location in order to track another ship's movement through its base. These custom tokens offer an elegant solution—and simultaneously commemorate your successes at the World Championships.

These items will also be available on the prize wall.

Top 32

The Top 32 players in the X-Wing World Championships will claim a set of eight custom dice—four red attack dice and four green defense dice. Each die mixes its base color with a distinctive silver swirl.

Top 16

Just like the heroes of the Battle of Yavin IV, each of the Top 16 participants in the X-Wing World Championships will receive a stunning commemorative medallion.

Top 8

If you hope to fly into the Top 8 players at the X-Wing World Championships, you'll need to know your ships and their maneuvers inside and out. You'll need to know whether you'll clear an asteroid by a fraction or slam straight into it. You'll need to anticipate your opponent's maneuvers, and you'll need know if your response is likely to put you just inside—or outside—your opponent's firing arc.

Maneuvering is everything in X-Wing, whether you're flying in formation with a swarm of TIEs or swerving through obstacles with Han and the Millennium Falcon. And if you make your way to the Top 8, you're proving yourself an expert flyer.

Accordingly, the Top 8 will be able to celebrate their piloting skills with a set of white and red maneuver templates—designed to match the range rulers from the prize wall that they may have claimed earlier in the event.

Fly with these templates, and you're letting your future opponents know that your ships don't end up in the right position by accident; it's thanks to your skill as a player.

Top 4

By the time you reach the Top 4 of the 2018 X-Wing World Championships, you'll have played through numerous close calls, scraped past some nasty shots, fired some clutch shots of your own, and endured plenty of dramatic highs and lows. You'll have enjoyed some fast-paced action and some truly fantastic piloting through the tightest of conflicts.

The art print you'll win for making the Top 4 celebrates these dramatic turns of events with Vlad Ricean's stunning rendition of a Protectorate Starfighter as it swoops down from the skies to race through a craggy pass, while molten lava glows red hot beneath it.

Runner-Up

In addition to everything else he or she wins over the course of the X-Wing World Championships, the 2018 World Championship Runner-Up claims a Finalist plaque decorated with the same artwork as the Top 4 art print.

Trust in the Force Is Now Available for Star Wars: The Card Game

The Star Wars galaxy is a place of adventure and danger, a place where anything can happen. Perhaps most of all, it’s a place where you want close friends and allies standing by your side. You can bring the iconic characters of the classic trilogy and Star Wars Rebels together with Trust in the Force, the fifth Force Pack of the Alliances cycle for Star Wars™: The Card Game, now available at your local retailer and online through our webstore!

The Alliances cycle has nearly drawn to its close with the release of Trust in the Force. As it pushed the boundaries by encouraging players to bring their factions together in a single deck, it also turned an eye onto the past cycles of Star Wars: The Card Game. Within the ten new objective sets (two copies each of five distinct sets) found within Trust in the Force, you’ll find a copy of Obi-Wan Kenobi that rewards you for working across factions and two other sets that mark a return to the battles of Hoth.

Back on the Ice

In the first cycle of Force Packs for Star Wars: The Card Game, The Hoth Cycle, players were drawn into a thematic journey through the entire Battle of Hoth—from the Empire’s first probing efforts to find Echo Base to the Rebel Alliance’s desperate flight after the walker assault. Now, the Imperial Navy objective set from Trust in the Force gives dark side players a way to make Walker units more dangerous than ever before.

Two towering Walker units lie at the heart of this objective set, starting with Blizzard 1 (Trust in the Force, 2178), the AT-AT that General Veers rode as he commanded the assault on Echo Base. Like all AT-ATs, Blizzard 1 offers high damage capacity and a punishing array of combat icons, as well as the elite keyword. However, like many other Walker units, it also offers you the chance to forfeit your combat icons for another effect. In this case, you can simply discard any participating unit, so long as it doesn’t have an enhancement attached to it. If your blast damage would be useless (such as when defending against a light side attack), discarding an enemy unit outright can be more powerful.

You’ll also be able to punish your opponent’s forces with another Walker, Blizzard 2 (Trust in the Force, 2179). While it’s not an elite unit like Blizzard 1, Blizzard 2 has the edge (1) keyword, making it that much easier for you to win the edge battle. Blizzard 2’s effect is not as openly dangerous as Blizzard 1, but it offers a far more insidious effect. Instead of using Blizzard 2’s combat icons, you can instead set the Balance of the Force to the dark side and skip the Force phase this turn! By guaranteeing that you’ll hold the Force through the entirety of the next turn, Blizzard 2 can help you spread the power of the dark side across the galaxy.

The downside of marching heavy Walkers into battle is their high resource cost. Especially earlier in the game, before you’ve had a chance to establish your economy, investing a large amount of resources to play a single unit could be fatal. Fortunately, this set’s objective gives you a way to reduce the cost of your assault force. So long as you have Blizzard Assault (Trust in the Force, 2176) in play, you can reduce the cost of the first Walker unit you play each turn by the number of Hoth objectives that you control. Potentially playing Blizzard 1 for just two resources makes Blizzard Assault an invaluable addition to your objective lineup—and you can keep it around longer by using Battle of Hoth (Trust in the Force, 202) to remove damage.

No assault on Echo Base would be complete without the Imperial general who led their forces into battle: General Veers (Trust in the Force, 2177). General Veers makes all of your Walker units elite, and you can also play him as a pilot on one of your Walker units. As we’ve already seen, Walker units are known for having an additional, powerful effect, so long as you forfeit your combat icons. With General Veers piloting a Walker, that unit can both trigger its Reaction and resolve its combat icons! This additional firepower may even give you the edge that you need to declare a Decisive Victory (Trust in the Force, 2180), destroying enemy enhancements even as you blow up objectives.

You may be fighting the Battle of Hoth all over again—or you may be forging unlikely alliances across the galaxy, finding new friends, and fighting side by side. Whether you fight for the dark side or the light, you’ll find new cards in the Trust in the Force expansion for Star Wars: The Card Game!

The 2018 May World Championships are the pinnacle of Organized Play for five of the Star Wars galaxy's greatest tabletop games—Star Wars™: Armada, Star Wars™: Destiny, Star Wars™: Imperial Assault, Star Wars™: The Card Game, and X-Wing™.

For five days, the top competitors for each of these games will gather at the Fantasy Flight Games Center in Roseville, MN. They will come from across the globe to represent their local communities against the world's best players. They will roll dice, move ships, and play cards. And they will battle for the fate of the galaxy.

But it's not just the fate of the galaxy that's at stake. The World Championships will feature a wide range of exclusive prizes, including The Greatest Prize in Gaming, the World Champion's opportunity to inspire the design of a future card for his or her game.

Do you think you have what it takes to claim the title of World Champion? Players with reserved seats can claim those seats now, and other players can now apply for the remaining seats!

The Schedule

The 2018 May World Championships are five days of thrilling competition. But they're more than just competition. They are an energetic, five-day celebration of the Star Wars galaxy.

Throughout the World Championships—and in a host of side events—we will see ace starfighter pilots engaged in fantastic, high-speed dogfights. The galaxy's most iconic heroes and villains will leap into heated lightsaber duels. Cunning fleet admirals will spring traps that they lay far in advance. And Rebel strike teams will race across contested battlefields—only to find themselves confronted by Darth Vader, the Dark Lord of the Sith.

There's a whole galaxy of action and drama to explore, and the five days from May 2nd – 6th are jammed full of top-level competitions and thrilling side events. We have at least one free side event planned for all of our games, and to accommodate the tremendous demand for more X-Wing and Star Wars: Destiny events, we have taken advantage of our auxiliary space at the Radisson to offer a slate of On Demand Hangar Bays and Destiny pods.

Step-by-Step Application

1) Make certain you submit your application through the correct form and by the appropriate deadline.

Regional Champions, National Champions, Galactic Qualifier Champions, World Champions, and other players with reserved seats should use this form. Applications due March 26, 2018 by 11:59 PM CDT.
General applicants (without reserved seats) should use this form. Applications due February 20, 2018 by 11:59 PM CST.
Members of the press should use this form. Applications due March 30th by Noon CDT.

2) FFG will draw names from the general applicants and send invitations to all players who are awarded seats (via reserved seats or lottery).

3) Once you receive an invitation, you may purchase your ticket.

Important Notes

All applications must be submitted and received through the forms we provide.
Limit 1 application per person.
When you apply for a game with multiple Day 1 events, you are not applying for a specific day. Your day will be assigned. Your application for other games will not be taken into consideration.
You may swap your event ticket for Day 1 of an event with another player's ticket for a different Day 1 of the same event. You are responsible for finding another player to swap with. (We recommend the 2018 May World Championships Ticket Swap community forums.) Both members of a swap must fill out the appropriate form (https://tinyurl.com/y8v5pulv), and all exchanges must be submitted by both players by April 17th at 11:59 PM CDT.
After all ticket swaps are processed, players who swapped tickets will be contacted if they still hold tickets for multiple events on the same day. Players will be asked to indicate which ticket will be cancelled and refunded.
You may not exchange the event ticket for one game for the event ticket for another game.
There is no charge to apply and no obligation to make a purchase. Your application does not guarantee you the opportunity to purchase one or more open seats for the 2018 May World Championships.
The number and percentage of applicants selected will be determined based on availability.
Application acceptance and reserved seats are specific to their game (and day).
Purchases not completed by listed deadlines will void acceptance or reservation.

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce Promise of Power, the final Force Pack of the Alliances cycle for Star Wars™: The Card Game!

Throughout the Alliances cycle, you’ve been encouraged to forge new alliances across affiliations. Jedi may work closely with the Rebel Alliance or the Smugglers and Spies of the galaxy. The Sith may rule an empire, wielding the Imperial Navy and Scum and Villainy alike as weapons against the light side. For many, these alliances make them stronger—the whole becoming greater than the sum of its parts. But for some, unlikely alliances can lead to nothing but turmoil and chaos.

Promise of Power is the final Force Pack of the Alliances cycle, marking the climactic conclusion of the cycle. With ten new objective sets (two copies each of five distinct sets), this Force Pack continues to reward players for melding affiliations together in a single deck. Promise of Power also introduces plenty of characters from Star Wars Rebels, bringing a new version of Ezra Bridger, Cikatro Vizago, and more Inquisitors into the game.

In addition to being the final Force Pack of the Alliances cycle, Promise of Power marks the completion of Star Wars: The Card Game. Over the past five years, Star Wars: The Card Game has seen five deluxe expansions and six cycles of Force Packs, ranging from the Battle of Hoth, through the pilots of the Rogue Squadron cycle, the forest battles of the Endor cycle, and the most recent changes of the Opposition and Alliances cycle. With the conclusion of the Alliances cycle, the game will be complete, and the Star Wars World Championships in May will be the final Organized Play World Championship for the game.

The Conflict Within

As you’ve seen throughout the Star Wars saga, finding allies is usually helpful, giving characters a measure of strength and resolve they would not have otherwise possessed. Still, that’s not always the case, as we saw at the end of the second season of Star Wars Rebels. There, Ezra Bridger was drawn into a tumultuous struggle between the light and dark inside himself—a struggle aptly represented in the Jedi objective set from Promise of Power.

You get a hint of the struggles to come with the objective of this set, Twilight of the Apprentice (Promise of Power, 2186). This objective simply reads, “Reaction: After the Balance of the Force changes sides, draw 1 card.” In most cases, the light side wants the Balance of the Force to remain with the light as much as possible. While that may still be true in a deck using Twilight of the Apprentice, you’ll also find plenty of rewards for having the Balance of the Force on the dark side in this objective set.

To begin, you’ll discover a new copy of Ezra Bridger (Promise of Power, 2187). While the Balance of the Force lies with the light side, Ezra Bridger gains edge (1), and while it’s with the dark side, he gains elite. No matter which side controls the Force at any moment in the game, there’s a benefit for Ezra. Similarly, you may equip any Force User or Force Sensitive unit with Ezra's Lightsaber (Promise of Power, 2189). While the Balance of the Force is with the light side, the enhanced unit can’t be targeted by enemy events—and while the Force is with the dark side, the enhanced unit gains additional combat icons!

It’s easy to see that at certain points, you may wish to switch the Balance of the Force, if only to seize the Balance of the Force before your turn begins. The Echoes of the Force (Promise of Power, 500) fate card included in this set helps you manipulate the Force struggle, while Use Your Power (Promise of Power, 2190) simply allows you to set the Balance of the Force to the other side, potentially changing the fates of your characters or the outcome of the game in a moment.

Still, there are certain units that much prefer the Balance of the Force to be set to one side in particular. "Old Master" (Promise of Power, 2188) may be much more than he appears—but his agenda is clear, at least in Star Wars: The Card Game. Though you cannot commit “Old Master” to the Force, whenever the Balance of the Force is with the dark side, the power of “Old Master” grows considerably. In most circumstances, the light side would prefer to hold the Force on its own side, but this objective set challenges you to adapt to the moment, and perhaps search for power in places where you would ordinarily never go.

Swayed by the Dark Side Is Now Available for Star Wars: The Card Game

Throughout the Alliances cycle for Star Wars™: The Card Game, you’ve been driven to push the boundaries of individual factions and forge alliances with the other great powers in the galaxy. You may be bringing the ancient order of the Jedi together with the Rebel Alliance and a coalition of Smugglers and Spies. Or, you might try to harness the power of the Scum and Villainy in the service of an Imperial Navy led by the Sith. No matter which side of the Galactic Civil War you find yourself upon, you’ll find new cards for your decks soon—Swayed by the Dark Side, the fourth Force Pack in the Alliances cycle is now available for Star Wars: The Card Game!

Like the other Force Packs of this cycle, the ten new objective sets (two copies each of five distinct sets) included in Swayed by the Dark Side give you new ways to build your decks. You can walk the streets of Tatooine cities at Night alongside units like Myo or Black Krrsantan, or relive the climactic trench run at the end of A New Hope with backup from Biggs Darklighter. You may even choose to forge your alliances with the creatures native to the forest moon of Endor, the Ewoks.

Sacrifice and Unity

In Star Wars: The Card Game, the Ewoks have long specialized in fighting together against the forces of the dark side. Alone, Ewoks can be overwhelmed by stronger or more technologically developed forces. But when fighting together, they’re even capable of destroying an entire legion of the Emperor’s finest troops.

Of course, the first step to overwhelming your opponent with hordes of Ewoks rushing across the battlefield is to call them into action. Feast of Honor (Swayed by the Dark Side, 2141) is the perfect tool to start gathering your forces, because this free event reduces the cost of every Ewok unit you play this phase. Ewoks are already known for having relatively cheap deployment costs, and when you reduce them further with a Feast of Honor, it’s easy to see how you could flood the board.

Having plenty of Ewoks in play is crucial for making the most of the Ewok Ally (Swayed by the Dark Side, 2140). You’ll find two copies of this unit in the objective set, and so long as you control three or more Ewok units, your Ewok Allies gain edge (1), making them even more dangerous. What’s more, with a deployment cost of two, they only cost a single resource to bring into play when you’re holding a Feast of Honor, making them a perfect investment for a cheap, cost-effective unit.

One of the biggest weaknesses of Ewoks has been their fragility in battle. Though they can accomplish great things when united, they can fall in battle relatively easily when caught individually. The objective of this set, Native Blessings (Swayed by the Dark Side, 2138) offers a partial counter. Native Blessings boasts a massive eight damage capacity, and it also bears the protect Ewok keyword, helping you keep your units alive when it desperately counts. Of course, there may be reasons that you actually want to sacrifice your Ewoks to attain a greater goal. Ultimate Sacrifice (Swayed by the Dark Side, 2142) lets you cancel the effects of any event—potentially stopping your opponent’s plans in their tracks. The only price you need to play is sacrificing one of your Ewoks.

Even being sacrificed is not necessarily the end for your Ewoks, however, especially when you have Logray (Swayed by the Dark Side, 2139) in play. Logray is a formidable unit in combat, and he makes all of your Ewoks elite warriors, keeping them from being pinned down by focus tokens. More importantly, however, after Logray is focused to strike, he immediately lets you put an Ewok unit with a cost of four or lower into play from your discard pile. With the ability to keep recurring your Ewok warriors, even in the face of punishing losses, Logray can bring any Ewok deck to the next level.

The Regional Championships for Star Wars™: The Card Game are high-level events, offering some of the greatest and most spirited competition to be found in your region and, as a result, they draw players from far and near. This means the events aren't just fantastic opportunities to try out your newest decks; they're also great opportunities to meet new players and enjoy more of the game's extended community.

Desperate Circumstances Is Now Available for Star Wars™: The Card Game

The droids of the Star Wars galaxy have long been denied the privileges and rights granted without hesitation to the organic beings of the galaxy. Some are willing to serve or suffer without surcease, but for other droids, this ignominy is an insult—an incentive to push against the tide, capturing whoever stands in their way for the cause of droids across the galaxy. Now, you’ll have your chance to stand beside them—Desperate Circumstances is now available for Star Wars™: The Card Game at your local retailer!

The Force Packs of the Alliances cycle form a pattern of bringing the factions together, beginning with new affiliation cards and continuing through objective sets that reward you for bringing multiple affiliations together into a single deck. Desperate Circumstances is the latest installment in that cycle, and here, you’ll find a resurgence of Night cards with the Nightsisters, a collection of the strange beings seen in the cantina in A New Hope, and iconic characters like Captain Rex.

Today, we’ll take a closer look at the Scum and Villainy objective set from Desperate Circumstances!

Automated Assassins

From the days of the Core Set, capturing your opponent’s cards has been a theme for the Scum and Villainy of the galaxy—holding enemy cards facedown at Scum and Villainy objectives. Still, although the potential to capture cards was always there, the perfect union between ways to capture cards and ways to benefits for captured cards has been elusive for many decks. Now, in Desperate Circumstances, you’ll find another objective set that helps to marry these two ideals into a single potent deck.

It begins with ways to capture your opponent’s cards. You may simply post a Bounty Listing (Desperate Circumstances, 2136) for your opponent’s units. This enhancement can provide a resource in a pinch, but more often, you’ll be focusing it to trigger its ability—after any enemy unit enters play, you can focus Bounty Listing to capture that unit! You’ll undoubtedly find that your opponent is a little less likely to invest significant resources into a hard-hitting unit if there’s a good chance that the unit will simply be captured as soon as it enters play.

Of course, you don’t necessarily need to wait for your opponent to play a unit in order to capture it. Security Protocols (Desperate Circumstances, 2114) is a new fate card that allows you to look at the top three cards of your opponent’s deck. Then, you can capture any one of those cards that you choose, place one card on the bottom of your opponent’s deck, and place the final card back on top of the deck. Of course, this lets you potentially capture another card, but it also gives you a slight ability to search for the unit that you need to capture—something that comes into play with IG-88D!

IG-88D (Desperate Circumstances, 2134) provides you with an outlet for all of the cards that you capture at your objectives. The multiple versions of IG-88 have entered the game one by one, each offering different tools to the Scum and Villainy faction, and each bringing different abilities to the table. Like previous versions, IG-88D is no slouch in combat, whether or not you’re able to win the edge. More important, perhaps, is his ability to simply remove an enemy unit from the game—as an Action, you can discard any captured unit to destroy a target copy of that unit.

In many circumstances, your opponent won’t know exactly which units you have captured at your objectives. Because of this, he may have no idea what’s coming when he declares an attack with his most powerful units. In the face of having units destroyed without warning by IG-88D, even the most stalwart attackers will be forced to reconsider their battle plans.

It’s also worth noting that IG-88D is a Droid unit—and one who’s more than willing to fight for the rights of Droids across the galaxy. The secondary theme of this objective set empowers your Droids and makes them even more dangerous than they already are. In addition to IG-88D, you’ll find another Droid unit in this objective set: the Rogue B1 Battle Droid (Desperate Circumstances, 2135). Though this Droid features no special abilities, it has the combat icons to pose a threat, whether it’s attacking or defending. And what’s more, the final cards of this objective set can make all of your Droids surpass the inhibitions of their programming.

The objective of this set, Automated Assassin (Desperate Circumstances, 2133), allows you to pump out more damage, simply by having your Droids participating in engagements. With this objective in play, whenever an engagement with one of your participating Droid units ends, you can deal one damage to any other participating unit. One damage might not seem like much when considered on its own merits, but it can quickly stack up when you combine it with the damage that’s already being poured out by IG-88D and the Rogue B1 Battle Droids.

Finally, you can help your Droids reach their full potential by staging a Droid Uprising (Desperate Circumstances, 2137). This one-cost event has a simple effect—it simply gives the elite keyword to all of your Droids for the refresh phase, letting them clear their focus tokens without inhibition. Holding the Force may be difficult for a deck built entirely around Droids, especially when they’re pitted against powerful Force Users. Giving your Droid units the elite keyword can help to mitigate the effects of being committed to the Force.

An Uncertain Future

Even hidden among the arid sand dunes and rocky outcrops of Tatooine, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi posed a tremendous threat to the Galactic Empire, its tyranny, and its lies. He was a threat not only because of his skills as a warrior, Force user, and former general, but because he could inspire hope—as a survivor of Order 66. He hadn't been defeated. He lived. He could still fight back.

In Trust in the Force, we find a new version of Obi-Wan Kenobi entering Star Wars™: The Card Game (Trust in the Force, 280-2), one with the power to protect and inspire others, offering new synergies with units from each of the game's different light side affiliations.

Arriving in the Danger in the Wastes objective set (Trust in the Force, 280-1), this is an Obi-Wan at a crossroads. We recognize the old hermit who watched over the young Luke Skywalker from afar, silently and secretly protecting the boy and his family from the dangers presented by Jabba the Hutt, his enforcers, and even bounty hunters like Black Krrsantan. But we also recognize the Jedi Master's desire to lead the fight against the Empire—to provide the Rebellion with the Edge it would need to win more victories.

There's also a powerful remnant of the guardian impulse in this version of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Allied with any of the game's Smugglers and Spies, Obi-Wan gains protect Character; his protective instincts are not limited solely to Luke Skywalker, after all, but to all those threatened by the Empire, the Hutts, and other thugs and mercenaries.

All told, this new version of Obi-Wan finds himself pulled in a variety of different directions—and trusting the Force to guide him.

Regardless of the different directions in which he may have found himself pulled, we know that Obi-Wan ultimately stayed on Tatooine, remained hidden, and watched over Luke until the fateful day that Luke's new R2 unit brought the two together. The Danger in the Wastes objective set reflects this fact by supporting Obi-Wan's extended stay on Tatooine with a Steadfast Settler (Trust in the Force, 280-3) and Krayt Dragon Howl (Trust in the Force, 280-5). These suggest the different people with whom Obi-Wan would have interacted and the subtle ways he drew upon the Force in those moments when he felt compelled to do so—no lightsabers were needed when he could simply scare the weak-minded away from their misguided pursuits.

At the same time, the objective set provides us with Obi-Wan's Robes (Trust in the Force, 280-4), an enhancement that reminds us of the tremendous impact Obi-Wan could make outside of Tatooine—working either with the Rebel Alliance or the Smugglers and Spies subverting the Empire in their own ways. Whenever it is attached to a Character and you control a Rebel or Smuggler card, Obi-Wan's Robes increases your reserve value by one—or by two if the enhancement is attached to Obi-Wan himself.

Obi-Wan's Robes can easily have an even greater impact on your games when they're combined with the larger starting reserve values offered by Jedi: Guardians of Justice (Allies of Necessity, 2063). Imagine your opponent's surprise when your strange, old desert hermit pulls back the cowl of his robes to reveal the face of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi Master. Backed by the whopping nine cards in your hand, your Obi-Wan will have more than enough tricks and Force icons to emerge the victor from any confrontation!

For Obi-Wan, the other residents of Tatooine, and all those oppressed by the Galactic Empire, the future may be uncertain, but if you trust in the Force—and let it flow through your hand—your opportunity will come. You'll be able to hold your ground, protect those around you, and then—when you sense the time is right—you can strike a blow for freedom!

It Binds the Galaxy Together

The Force binds the galaxy together, and it flows through Star Wars: The Card Game as you cycle your cards each turn. Some opportunities you seize. Some cards you play. Others you let pass, discarding them, or using them in your edge battles.

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the upcoming release of Swayed by the Dark Side, the fourth Force Pack in the Alliances cycle for Star Wars™: The Card Game!

With sixty new cards (divided between two copies each of five different objective sets), Swayed by the Dark Side continues to explore the bonds of friendship, duty, and honor that drive many of the galaxy's pilots and soldiers, as well as the fear, hope, and greed that compel others to take action.

Among these new objective sets, you'll find new units and tactics for the Sith, Imperials, Scum, Jedi, and Rebels. You'll find cards to carry you from the Imperial strongholds of the Core Worlds to the forested moons of the Outer Rim. You'll find new enhancements, events, and Fate cards that support decks built around multiple affiliations. And you'll find a number of recognizable, high-impact characters taken straight from the films and Marvel comics, including Biggs Darklighter, the Ewok Logray, and the notorious Wookiee bounty hunter Black Krrsantan!

Unsavory Contracts

After making his debut in Marvel's Darth Vader comics, Black Krrsantan has quickly become a fan-favorite, and he makes his Star Wars: The Card Game debut in Swayed by the Dark Side.

Tall, dark, and deadly, the black-furred Wookiee bounty hunter (Swayed by the Dark Side, 279-2) has been seen most frequently in tow with the notorious Doctor Aphra (Allies of Necessity, 263-2). But their partnership isn't driven by the sort of loyalty or friendship that has long kept Chewbacca united with Han Solo. The primary bond between Doctor Aphra and Black Krrsantan is a matter of credits. Aphra owes Krrsantan a great number of credits, and the Wookiee has elected to keep her safe in order to guarantee his repayment.

In the comics, the adventures these treasure-seekers share are marked by chaos, cunning, and violence, and Star Wars: The Card Game allows you to explore new adventures for the duo when you play with Doctor Aphra's objective set, Rogue Archaeology (Allies of Necessity, 263-1), and Black Krrsantan's set, Unsavory Contracts (Swayed by the Dark Side, 279-1).

Just as in the comics, Black Krrsantan makes an ideal enforcer to serve alongside Aphra. Even though Aphra's ability and objective set appear geared more toward realizing the destructive potential of Droids like 0-0-0 (Aggressive Negotiations, 267-2), BT-1 (Aggressive Negotiations, 267-3), and IG-88B (Solo's Command, 188-2), they can just as easily contribute to the defensive potential of a dark side deck built around using Black Krrsantan's Targeted Strike and Tactics icon—as well as those on Aphra and other characters—to establish an unassailable late-game.

In such a partnership, Aphra's Rogue Archaeology objective can generate valuable shields, even during an engagement—provided you can play a BX-series Droid Commando (Allies of Necessity, 263-3). And Black Krrsantan provides the muscle, taking down enemy units with his Targeted Strike and the extra unit damage provided by Aqualish Arms Dealer (Swayed by the Dark Side, 279-3) and Allies of Necessity (Swayed by the Dark Side, 279-6).

Krrsantan can even enable Doctor Aphra to conduct her Droid Reconstruction (Aggressive Negotiations, 267-5). Since Krrsantan's objective set contains a point of Influence on its Underworld Contact (Swayed by the Dark Side, 279-4), and since the Underworld Contact is a Mercenary, you could extort the Contact for a point of damage with Unsavory Contacts to remove a focus token and make the resource available to play another event. In this way, you could potentially surprise your opponent with the timely play of an event as disruptive as Reversal of Fate (Edge of Darkness, 81-6) or Springing the Ambush (Lure of the Dark Side, 106-5).

Finally, the Unsavory Contacts objective set contains another pair of cards that lend a great deal of strength to any deck that pairs Black Krrsantan with the members of another affiliation—whether those are Aphra and her Droids or other units like Vader, Stormtroopers, or Star Destroyers.

When you have an engagement with units from at least two different affiliations, the set's copy of Allies of Necessity (Swayed by the Dark Side, 279-6) is, as World Champion Mick Cipra previously noted, effectively as good as both Heat of Battle (Core Set, 169) and Target of Opportunity (Core Set, 170) combined. Sure, it's a bit trickier to pull off, but it gives you both the extra unit damage and blast damage you'd normally get out of the other fate cards, and with Black Krrsantan's Targeted Strike, that extra unit damage is arguably more valuable than the one point of damage you'd apply directly with Heat of Battle.

And the second of these cards, Alliance of Evil (Swayed by the Dark Side, 279-5), functions similarly—although at action speed. As with Allies of Necessity, Alliance of Evil forces you to target two of your units that don't share an affiliation and then grant a bonus to each of them. One gains a point of shielding; the other gains edge (1). And both keep these bonuses until the end of the phase.

The biggest difference between Alliance of Evil and Allies of Necessity, however, may be the fact that the units don't both have to be part of the same engagement. Accordingly, even though it may feel counter-intuitive to wait until after an edge battle to play Allies of Necessity to give edge (1) to one of your units, you can give it to the unit you've held back for a second engagement, especially if you need the point of shielding to keep Black Krrsantan, Aphra, or another key unit from being destroyed or being suppressed by your opponent's tactics icon.

Wookiee Rage and Rebel Wingmen

With all the tricks and destruction that Black Krrsantan and his Unsavory Contracts bring to the Scum and Villainy affiliation, all the support the Rebel Alliance gains from Biggs Darklighter (Swayed by the Dark Side, 276-2) and Red Three (Swayed by the Dark Side, 276-3), and all the other options provided in the Force Pack's other objective sets, Swayed by the Dark Side promises to make it difficult to choose between the affiliations.

So it's a good thing the Force Pack furthers the Alliances cycle's efforts to make it easier to play two or more affiliations in the same deck!

Honor the Ewoks and their sacrifices. Advance the Sith agenda under the cover of Night. Terrorize nearby star systems with your Star Destroyers and bombers. The game's affiliations are no longer as divisive as they once were; the only truly enduring conflict is between the light and dark sides of the Force. Will you stand with the armies of light, or will you be Swayed by the Dark Side?

Across the Star Wars saga, the alliances and friendships between characters have formed some of the most memorable pieces of the story—just as much as the epic conflicts between adversaries like Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. When you can rely on your friends, there’s no limit to what you might accomplish. Now, those alliances become more important than ever before. Aggressive Negotiations, the second Force Pack in the Alliances cycle for Star Wars™: The Card Game, is now available at your local United States retailer!

The Aggressive Negotiations Force Pack continues the major themes of the Alliances cycle, bringing the ways that affiliations can work together to the forefront of your attention. With ten new objective sets (two copies each of five distinct sets), you’ll find new ways to use many decks, whether you’re focused on capturing your opponent’s cards or unleashing the power of the Wookiees. With recognizable characters such as 0-0-0, BT-1, and Chirrut Îmwe and two new fate cards entering the game for the first time, there are plenty of new alliances that could give you the edge as you play out your conflicts in the Star Wars universe.

Trust in the Force

Within the new Jedi objective set included in Aggressive Negotiations, you’ll find Chirrut Îmwe, a warrior-monk dedicated to the Force. Though Chirrut is sworn to be a guardian and a protector, he possesses undeniable skills in combat. He is a character balanced between defense and offense—a character of quiet insight and explosive attacks. Fittingly, this objective set mirrors that dichotomy, with three defensive cards and three offensive cards.

Chirrut Îmwe (Aggressive Negotiations, 2096) is a powerful character, who’s perfectly capable of hitting hard in a fight, taking down enemy units and objectives alike. Still, though his combat icons are balanced, his ability is more defensive in nature—when an enemy card effect or combat icon would place focus tokens on Chirrut, you can prevent the placement of one of those tokens. Combined with the elite keyword, this ability helps ensure that Chirrut won’t be tied down or distracted by your opponent. He’ll always be where you—and the Force—need him to be.

Chirrut is joined in this objective set by a Mirialan Mystic (Aggressive Negotiations, 2097). Although this unit has no unique abilities, her combat icons make her naturally suited to defense, using her tactics icon to neutralize your opponent’s most dangerous unit. And if the Mirialan Mystic or Chirrut Îmwe should fall in battle, Trust in the Force (Aggressive Negotiations, 2095) gives you a way to recover from your losses. Whenever a Jedi Character unit leaves play, Trust in the Force lets you put a non-Jedi unit with equal or lower cost into play, maintaining your board position, even in the face of losses. Of course, you’ll need to forge alliances with other affiliations to make the most of Trust in the Force, but with the other rewards offered by this cycle, that’s hardly a problem.

While the first three cards of this objective set are more defensive in nature, the other three cards take a decidedly more aggressive bent, starting with a copy of Heat of Battle (Aggressive Negotiations, 65). By dealing a damage to any unit participating in the conflict, Heat of Battle is perfect for eliminating weakened units or softening them up before your attack.

If a unit is too tough to be destroyed by Heat of Battle, the Handcrafted Light Bow (Aggressive Negotiations, 2098) is the perfect enhancement to spread more damage around. This enhancement can be given to any Character unit, raising its damage capacity and granting it more unit damage. Of course, the Handcrafted Light Bow is much more dangerous in the hands of a master like Chirrut Îmwe. While the Handcrafted Light Bow is attached to Chirrut Îmwe, he can deal one damage to every participating enemy unit after he strikes—spreading a swath of damage across every unit that opposes you.

Of course, some units are simply too strong to be taken down by a few points of damage—and you may desperately need to stop those units before they strike. If you don’t have a way to focus a unit with a tactics icon, then Stunning Blow (Aggressive Negotiations, 2099) could be just what you need. This zero-cost event has a simple, but effective Reaction: “After a target unit takes 1 or more damage, place 1 focus token on that unit.” By focusing a unit that you damage, you can ensure that even if you don’t destroy that unit, it won’t be able to strike back and disrupt your well-laid plans.

A New Star Wars™: The Card Game FAQ is Now Available

The latest version of the Star Wars™: The Card Game FAQ is now online! This update contains the usual clarifications, updates, new questions, and other minor changes that come with refining the rules. In addition, today’s update includes multiple additions to the Restricted List and changes to term definitions that tournament players should be sure to read about. Learn why these changes were made directly from the developer in the paragraphs below, and then download the new FAQ to see all the changes for yourself!

Greetings Star Wars: The Card Game players!

Gen Con 2017 is fast approaching and with it comes an update to the Star Wars: The Card Game FAQ. Within it you will find a pair of additions to the Restricted List and a few changes to definitions of terms.

First, May the Force Be With You (Join Us or Die, Objective Set 112) and Spark of Rebellion (Galactic Ambitions, Objective Set 229) have been added to the restricted list together. Each will now anchor its own particular style of deck rather than combining the strong defensive tools of Yoda ’s set with the explosive potential of Kanan ’s set.
Endor Entrapment (So Be It, Objective Set 205) and Technological Terror (Technological Terror, Objective Set 259) have also been placed on the restricted list. The ability of the Death Star Engineers to ensure that a Gladiator-class Star Destroyer was always ready to both attack and defend made for a board state that was difficult to assail.
A rare combination of card effects made it possible for a Light Side player to occasionally end up attacking one of his or her own objectives. Text has been added to the “Engaging Objectives” entry to prevent this from happening (as was always the intent).
Lastly, the terms “Control and Ownership” have been added to the Definition section to explicitly spell out the difference between these two concepts. A number of entries related to control change already exist within the Game Play section, and each has been referenced in the full definition.
