Webmaster of www.front-toward-enemy.us, Jeremiah has been a vocal fan of Dust Tactics since its first publication. Thanks, Jeremiah!

As the war lingers on, the Allies and the SSU continue to create new weapons to combat their respective enemies. In America, the Allies develop new advanced aircraft to combat the Axis’s latest attempts to regain air-war superiority. Meanwhile in the Sino-Soviet Union, their weaponsmiths focus on meeting the threat of the Axis and the Allies’ latest team-serviced heavy weapons.

A Powerful Storm Approaches…

The SSU has been focusing much of their weapons development efforts on Tesla technology. These powerful weapons fire deadly lightning bolts at the enemy, combining some of the benefits of a laser weapon with the wider coverage of flamethrower. The initial efforts of the SSU required a large VK power source and needed to be mounted in a tank hull because of weight. However, recent efforts have resulted in smaller power sources, creating less powerful, but still effective, Tesla weapons.

The Red Lightning is the first of these smaller weapons, serviced by a three-man team and mounted on a small, wheeled carriage. It’s designed as an anti-infantry weapon, but remains capable against all but the most heavily armored vehicles. Wise commanders should remember, however, that it is not a designated anti-tank weapon, and will fail to take down most tanks with a single shot.

With the Red Lightning providing a big firepower boost to SSU infantry units, SSU forces have seen some gains on the Eastern Front. But the North American stalemate requires a longer-range weapon to combat the Allies’ use of heavy artillery and mortars. In response, the SSU have developed their own mortar. The Hailstorm, a long-range multi-use 120mm mortar, is crewed by a four-man team, and is able to devastate a majority of ground-based targets from almost any range.

Both the Hailstorm and the Red Lightning are cheap and effective ways to increase a company’s firepower. In addition, both are small enough to be transported in the SSU’s infamous transport helicopters, allowing you to bring these heavy weapons to the front quickly. Many commanders will want to bring both new heavy weapons with them into battle.

SSU Airborne Strike Force
Unit Point Cost SSU Airborne Transport + Hailstorm + Red Lightning 40+21+18 SSU Walker Transport + Nastasia 40+34 SSU Airborne Transport + Frontoviki + The Treadikovsky 40+19+7 Striker 62 Frontoviki 19 Total 300
In the above army, the majority of the SSU’s force is airborne, allowing them to move quickly across large battlefields. It is a well rounded force capable of taking down all but super-heavy tanks. Admittedly, super-heavy tanks would present a major threat to this army, but due to the narrow streets and alleys of the Russian cities and villages, they aren’t often seen on the battlefields of the Eastern Front. If large heavy ground vehicles are a major concern, Striker can be exchanged for one of its more heavily armed brethren, or for a couple KV-47s. These will be able to provide the anti-armor punch you’re looking for, but they won’t have the same range or speed as an attack helicopter.

An additional thing to take note of is while this army initially deploys in only five activations, once it’s on the ground it will actually have nine. But if that’s not enough for you and out-activating your opponent is a primary goal, then you might to want to focus on a more traditionally oriented ground force, like the one below.

SSU Mechanized Infantry Company
Unit Point Cost The Medvedi 44 Ohotniki 22 Fakyeli + The Derzhavin 28+5 Jnetzi 12 Nabludatyel 5 Red Lightning 18 Hailstorm 21 Nastasia 34 Natasha 32 Frontoviki + The Treadikovsky 19+7 Chinese Volunteers 12 Nikita 40 Total 299
As you can see, SSU commanders are capable of fielding a wide array of cheap and highly effective infantry and medium armor units, making out-activating many opponents an easy affair. But don’t assume that activations alone will win the day; foolishly sending wave upon wave of cheap infantry to be dashed to bits against heavy armor will quickly result in defeat. Appropriate use of skills, existing cover, and timing is still necessary to a decisive victory.

Ugly Ducklings…

The Allies have one of the largest air forces in the world, rivaled only by the Japanese naval air force in the Pacific. But in order to maintain their air superiority, the Allies must constantly advance their aircraft technology. When the Axis first began to field jet-powered aircraft, it took Allied pilots by surprise. Their speed and maneuverability was like nothing that had been seen before over the skies of Europe. It was quickly clear that the Allies would need small maneuverable jet fighters of their own.

However, as the Allies’ designers tried to cram more and more power and armament into the new planes it was clear it would not be nearly as small or maneuverable as their Axis counterparts. Ultimately, the P-48 Pelican is a far more heavily armed aircraft than the Fledermaus, but its size greatly affects its ability to maneuver, especially in the tight spaces. Unlike the turn-on-a-dime Fledermaus, the P-48 will dread low flying between the buildings of Zverograd on the Eastern Front. The Pelican makes up for some of its shortcomings by having a top speed equal to the Fledermaus, as well as a vectored thrust system allowing it to land and take off vertically.

There are several variants of the P-48—the X-variant and the C-variant being the most common. The P-48C is outfitted with the same heavy machine guns as all P-48s and is further equipped with two large bombs, allowing it to destroy many heavily armored targets. The only real drawback of this configuration is its need to be right on top of the enemy for the bombs to be effective, making it vulnerable to close-range anti-aircraft fire.

To help compensate for the C-variant’s shortcomings, the P-48X was fitted with large HVAR rockets. These dedicated ground-attack rockets are fired in volleys and can do devastating damage to all but the most heavily armored vehicles. Additionally, they have a longer range, allowing the P-48X to maintain some distance between it and its targets.

When choosing what type of aircraft to add to your Allied forces you’ll have a hard choice. Do you sacrifice some of your firepower for added range, or is it better to save points and gain a slight safety net? Either way, you’re most likely going to want to field multiple P-48s in a close air-support role. Two of these powerful aircraft supporting your ground forces will make quite the challenge for your opponents.

Allied Mechanized Infantry with Air Support
Unit Point Cost Bellowing Bertie 55 Bellowing Bertie 55 Hell Boys 34 Death Dealers 23 Leathernecks 15 The Choppers 13 Recon Boys 15 Wildfire 24 Grim Reapers 26 Pounder 40 Total 300
The above Allied force has just about everything: air support, armor support, heavy weapons, heavy infantry, and enough regulars to round out the list. About the only thing it doesn’t have is heroes, but this saves valuable Army Points for some extra infantry. Given the abilities of the Pelicans and the vast variety of ground forces represented here, this force should have little trouble overcoming all but the most powerful enemy forces.

On The Front…

All the units and armies shown here are well suited to the battles in and around the city of Zverograd on the Eastern Front. The Allies’ force is especially well constructed for the fights around the Zverograd Airfield. With their air support they could easily cover the open areas in and around the runways. The SSU forces, on the other hand, represent two opposite methods of thought. The first is small, fast and maneuverable, while the second is a more traditional ground force suited to almost any situation. Furthermore, the second SSU force could be modified for duty in the sewers beneath Zverograd by eliminating the armored vehicles, and replacing them with more infantry or heroes.

The choices are yours: how will you build your army? Will you focus on Allied technology, or the raw numbers of the SSU, who seemingly have an infinite supply of men?

Thanks, Jeremiah! Discuss this article in our forums, then head to your local retailer to grab any of the units described above!

Today, the SSU and the Allies can each add two new units to their arsenals; the P-48 Pelican, Allied Heavy Support Walker, BR 47 Self-Propelled Weapon Platform, and SSU Heavy Weapons Teams are all on sale at your local retailer and through our webstore!

The Allied P-48 Pelican

The Allies have been hard at work developing a means to meet Axis air threats: the P-48. The P-48 Pelican is capable of taking off with a very short runway, making this light and versatile fighter quick to deploy on any new battlefield. Additionally, the Pelican is equipped with Triple Dual .50 cal machine guns that give it a serious edge against enemies in the air and quickly eats through infantry.

The Pelican was first put to work as a dive bomber in its P-48C configuration, affectionately known to the Allies as “Diving Dotty.” The P-48C is capable of providing great ground support against infantry while fending off enemy fliers with its heavy machine guns alone. Diving Dotty really shines when it leverages its powerful 500 kg bombs, which can wipe out tanks and troops alike in a fiery explosion. Daredevil pilots dive as low as possible for extra accuracy in using these devastating explosives. In contrast to the P-48C, the P-48X, or “Bellowing Bertie,” prefers to deal death from a distance. Bellowing Bertie makes use of the same heavy machine guns as its predecessor, but is equipped with powerful Ground Rockets that let it strike from a longer range than Diving Dotty. These devastating rockets are a reliable and powerful way to clear a path for any Allied ground forces needing to cut through enemy tanks and troops. Either of these Pelican configurations are sure to add a great deal of firepower to your airborne Allied forces.

The Allied Heavy Support Walker

For those who prefer to keep the battle on the ground, the Heavy Support Walker is the Allies’ latest piece of VK-powered hardware. This versatile killing machine has three configurations, the Long Tom II, the Mobile HQ, and the Skysweeper. Each configuration supplies the Allies with a different advantage, giving the Allies the edge in any confrontation.

Leveraging long-range fire can make or break an engagement, and the Long Tom II is a potent engine of destruction from a distance. Equipped with the Long Tom M2 artillery weapon, this walker can turn the countryside to craters in no time. The efficient design of the Long Tom M2 and the huge supply of ammo on board this walker allows this main gun to be fired without the need to reload, meaning a constant rain of explosive power.

Meanwhile, the Mobile HQ is a command vehicle with a carry capacity of six, allowing Allied command squad units to hop on board and use the Mobile HQ’s equipment in order to more effectively use their abilities. The Mobile HQ is more than a transport vehicle, however, and it’s equipped with three .50 cal MGs for holding off incoming infantry and any lighter walkers.

Finally, the Allies are well aware of how quickly the tide can turn when superior air power is in play. Enter the Skysweeper configuration of the Allies Heavy Support Walker. This vehicle aims to keep the airspace above the Allies free of enemies. With its Triple 60 mm AA Gun, enemies will need a miracle if they’re trying fly by the Skysweeper. Once the air is clear, this trio of guns can set its sights on tanks and infantry for an equally deadly effect. Clear the air above the Allies with the Skysweeper!

The SSU BR 47 Self-Propelled Weapon Platform

For the SSU, the BR 47 Self-Propelled Weapon Platform has proven an inexpensive and potent method for bringing some anti-tank weapons to the battlefield. This light vehicle evolved from little more than a farm machine into a staple of the SSU forces.

The BR 47-100 Self-Propelled Weapon Platform configuration, known as the "Red Fury," wields a massive 100 mm M1946. This gun is capable of dealing damage to even the heaviest tanks and hardiest infantry. A few BR 47-100s can hold the line against much more powerful targets, dealing effective damage while the enemy attempts to close the distance.

If your SSU forces have another method of holding the line and a team of Observers in the field, then the BR 47-200 Self-Propelled Weapon Platform brings a cheap and effective artillery weapon to the field. Known as the "Red Rain," this vehicle carries a 200 mm Heavy Mortar. The cost-effective Red Rain can sit comfortably behind enemy lines and strike a spotter’s targets with deadly effect without ever getting in the line of fire.

The SSU Heavy Weapons Teams

The SSU Heavy Weapons Teams are focused on bringing some seriously big guns to the Sino-Soviet infantry. The Hailstorm and the Red Lightning units each come equipped with the newest in infantry adapted destructive power. Either of the two units in the SSU Heavy Weapons Teams box will lend an incredible amount of destructive force to the battlefield.

Four brave SSU soldiers make up the SSU Heavy Mortar Team known as Hailstorm. This team looks to pelt their enemies with a 120 mm Mortar capable of loading two different types of ammo. The 120 mm Mortar is capable of a vicious Artillery strike on tanks, or loading a type of heavy round that will easily and utterly destroy any enemy infantry at mid-range. Hailstorm is more than capable of flattening foes at any range. The Red Lightning unit leverages new Tesla Weapon technology with extremely deadly effect. The SSU has long been working to create weapons that make direct, effective use of electricity itself on the battlefield. Inspired by the research of the brilliant Nikola Tesla, the SSU began the creation of their Tesla Weapons.

Remember: Premium Pre-Painted Versions Are Available

If you want to bring your units to the field pre-painted and battle ready, then pick up our professionally painted versions of these units from our line of Dust Premium Edition Miniatures. Now, the time has come for the next chapter in the Dust story.

Beginning June 1st, 2013, New Zealand–based Battlefront Miniatures will partner with Dust Studio to publish and distribute the Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare miniatures game lines. On that date, we will transition sales and marketing activity to Battlefront Miniatures.

Below is the official press release for this announcement, followed by a brief Q&A.

Dust Studio today announced that Battlefront Miniatures will become its publishing and distribution partner for the Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare miniatures game lines. Fantasy Flight Games, Dust Studio’s current publishing partner for those games, will transition sales and marketing activity to Battlefront Miniatures on June 1st, 2013.

“Dust has had a wonderful few years, during which we have seen the game’s community grow exponentially,” said Dust creator Paolo Parente. “Both Dust Studio and Fantasy Flight Games have evolved significantly during our relationship, and we now mutually feel that we are both better served by moving in new directions. Christian (CEO of Fantasy Flight Games) and I have known each other for many years, and I can say that this decision is a truly amicable one.”

Added John-Paul Brisigotti, CEO of Battlefront Group, “we are very excited by the Dust universe, and although it is a first for us to be distributing a product other than our own, the fit with our business model made this partnership something we could not resist. During the last few years, we have been moving into new avenues to expand the breadth of products the group offers, and we see Dust as another one of these ranges.”

“We’ve been fortunate to distribute Dust Tactics since its debut at Gen Con 2010, and we’re very proud of our development work on Dust Warfare,” said Christian T. Petersen, CEO of Fantasy Flight Games (FFG). “The last year, however, as FFG experienced phenomenal growth across many of our publishing categories, it became clear that Paolo and the Dust games would be better served by a partner who specializes in the unique business of miniature games. We’re confident that Paolo’s partner choice in Battlefront Miniatures is a strong one, and we wish nothing but the best to them, to Paolo, and to the fantastic Dust fan community.”

Starting June 1st, Battlefront Miniatures will begin soliciting and distributing all new products for Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare. FFG will ship all of its previously solicited new products prior to that date, and FFG will continue to exclusively sell all current Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare items while its inventories last. While FFG will support the Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare regionals events in May and June 2013, all future marketing and organized play for the games will be handled by Battlefront Miniatures, including the scheduled Gen Con 2013 tournaments.

About Dust Studio: Dust Studio Limited is a Hong Kong–based company that creates and manufactures the Dust Tactics miniatures line, as well as model kits and scenery together with various books and comic books about the Dust universe. Today, we’re pleased to present a closer look at these undead abominations, by guest writer Jeremiah Terry.

A few weeks ago a frightening new Axis menace began to appear on the battlefields: the Ubertoten, (Superior Dead) a creation of Blutkreuz science. These living dead are more than just mindless animals like their zombie predecessors; they have functioning brains. For some, the retention of thought and will is an empowering force, allowing them to become weapons of frightening ability. Others, however, do not cope well with the realities of “life” as an undead soldier. These unfortunate few are destined to join the suicide squads, smashing through enemy armor as efficiently as they smash their own bodies.

The Heilige Tod (Ubertoten Suicide Squad) is armed with the powerful Panzerfaust 100, as well as the recently developed Magnetic Mine. While these weapons allow them to reduce enemy armored vehicles to wreckage, they have extremely limited range. Additionally, these weapons are almost useless against infantry. This creates a number of challenges for them. On the one hand, they have to get very close to their target to be effective. This makes open terrain their true enemy, since while crossing an open field they’ll be venerable to enemy fire that may cut them down prematurely. On the other hand, they could also find themselves cut off from their intended prey by enemy infantry. Under the right conditions, a single enemy infantry squad could impede or stop the Ubertoten Suicide Squad altogether. As a result, players will have to carefully choose their path across the battlefield to ensure maximum effectiveness from their Suicide Squads.

The Braineaters (The Ubertoten Assault Squad) have none of the drawbacks of the Heilige Tod. As these undead warriors have more fully embraced their new “lives,” they are able to create a more cohesive combat unit. The Assault Squad has several advantages over their undead brethren, the foremost of which is their effectiveness against infantry. Armed with the new MP 46, these harbingers of death can easily cut down most lighter infantry squads, making them a huge threat to the SSU forces. Further, their array of Panzerfausts allows them to handle armor with almost the same effectiveness as their more self-destructive counterparts. But all of this comes with a steep cost; at 40 AP the Braineaters will cost as much as a command squad, so players will have some hard choices to make when building their armies.

The Superior Dead Truly Are Superior

For players looking to field armies composed of large numbers of these Axis undead creations, there are two different types of undead units to choose from: the Ubertoten and the Untertoten. Between the two, there are a couple of differences worth noting. For instance, the “standard” Axis Zombie, or Untertoten (inferior dead), are close combat only, and have no ability to use soft cover. This can be a serious disadvantage in more open terrain, or in structures when fighting against specialized anti-infantry units. However, these inferior dead do have the advantage of the “Fast” ability, which neither of the new Ubertoten squads posses. Of course, all the undead have the advantage of Armor Class 3, as well as “Damage Resilient,” making them far more survivable then the average infantry squad. One last thing to note is that all zombie units have the “Blutkreuz Zombie” skill, which allows only heroes who share that skill to join their squad. So, regular heroes like Lara are not able to be paired with any undead squad.

Players should also take note that these new undead soldiers outclass their living counterparts in many ways. For instance, when compared to the Heavy Recon Grenadiers, at first glance the Braineaters may seem overpriced at 40 AP. However, when you look at the stats, you can see where the Braineaters outclass their living allies is some ways. Against armor vehicles, for example, the Grenadiers can’t match the Braineaters. The Braineaters can damage all armored ground vehicles, and in a sustained attack can destroy many tanks and walkers. In terms of anti-infantry ability they are nearly even, but what makes them truly superior is their added unit size. The addition of two extra Armor 3 “Damage Resilient” soldiers makes this unit far more survivable then their living counterparts.

Undead Manual of Operations

Axis commanders looking to field these dread creations of science should take note of the following demonstration. In our example scenario, an Axis force of zombies backed by minimal living infantry are used in a constraining urban environment to set up a trap for an SSU force. The SSU forces are attempting make their way through a narrow street; they are desperately needed to reinforce their beleaguered comrades on the front lines of the battle for Zverograd.

To start, you should familiarize yourself with the forces involved in this battle. Looking at the defending SSU forces, you can see that the majority of the units are armored vehicles capable of not only taking heavy damage, but also shredding infantry forces with little effort. The Axis force is the polar opposite of their enemy, but no less capable. The majority are undead units able to damage all forms of armored vehicles; even the heaviest tanks can be threatened by the lowly Untertoten. The remainder of the Axis force consists of infantry armed with that other scientific creation of the Blutkreuz: the Laser. The Laser unit’s weapons are varied enough to not only take on the SSU’s heavy armor, but also to defend against infantry counterattacks, allowing them to act as a rear guard for the zombie units. At first, you may think that the Axis forces don’t stand a chance against an SSU force with an 81 AP advantage. But all their units are Armor 3 with Damage Resilient, which will be a huge advantage over the SSU’s lighter infantry and medium walkers.
SSU Armored Company Points Blutkreuz Tod Kompany Points Mao Zedong 85 Braineaters & Totenmeister 40+24 Nastasia 34 Heilige Tod 34 Natasha 32 Axis Zombies & Grenadier X 31+24 Grand'Ma 36 Axis Zombies 31 Frontoviki, Red Yana & The Tredikovsky 18+20+7 Heavy Laser Grenadiers 30 Fakyeli, Yakov & The Sumarokov 28+30+5
The defending SSU Armored Company uses a total of 295 points, while the attacking Blutkreuz Tod Kompany uses a total of 214 points. Click to enlarge.

The scenario for this demonstration is a simple one. An SSU armored column must make its way from its deployment zone to the opposite side of the map, with at least 50% (148AP) of its forces intact. When an SSU unit reaches the exit zone, it is removed from play. At the end of the game, the AP for all SSU units that exited the board in this manner are totaled, and if they equal or exceed 148, the SSU wins. The Axis goal is even simpler: they must destroy as many of the SSU forces as possible before the end of the 8th round. The Axis will effectively win when the SSU AP total falls to 147 (including units that have exited the game) or less.

Looking at the map, you can see that the SSU have quite a challenge ahead of them. They must navigate a very narrow city street. Their heavy tanks and walkers will have very little room to maneuver. Further, they will have to spend many of their actions attempting to make their way to the “exit,” giving the Axis forces plenty of opportunities to attack.

On the Axis front, the biggest threats to the Axis’ plans are the two small infantry squads attached to the SSU’s armored force. Once these infantry units make their way into the buildings lining the street, the Axis will have a hard time dislodging them. This will force the Axis to either concentrate their forces in a couple of building to prevent any SSU incursion while providing themselves with cover, or spread out through all the buildings and hope that the SSU cannot gain entry easily.

The defender deployment zone is in red, the attacker deployment zone is in blue, and the defender exit zone is the striped area on the left. Click to enlarge.

Now look at a game already in progress. It’s the end of the first round and you can see the Axis player has opted for the “spread out” approach, placing forces in all the buildings. He has also concentrated the majority of his zombie infantry in the front line buildings nearest the SSU deployment zone. Also, it should now be quite apparent just how much of a terrain disadvantage the SSU forces have. Their only choice is to begin the second round with their forces clumped together. To attempt to mitigate this, the SSU player has chosen to place his walkers with the Assault Ability in his front lines. This will allow them to move out of the way quickly and attack if necessary after moving two spaces. Also in the lead is the powerful Mao Zedong, which can block the entire street if necessary, preventing any attack on the SSU’s rear echelon units for as long as its health holds out. One additional option available to the SSU commander is the ability for some of his infantry to ride on the Mao Zedong, which will help them to get deeper into the battlefield.

Become a General in the Blutkreuz Korps

Now that you have a basic understanding of these new Ubertoten squads and clear picture of the challenge before you, what would you do? It’s the beginning of round two, and thanks to Yakov’s powerful “Legendary Tactician” skill, the SSU has the initiative. This means they’ll have to make a hard choice: move or attack. They have the ability to threaten several of your units, but with the Hard Cover provided by the buildings, combined with your squads Damage Resilient ability, they’re not likely to be eliminated. Alternatively, if the SSU chooses to use Assault and move deep into the battlefield in a single activation, you may feel forced to move to cut them off. This is exactly what the SSU player chooses to do. He moves his Nastasia walker to the center of the map hoping to draw you out. It’s vulnerable, but he’s hoping it will survive the round, and be that much closer to the goal in Round 3.

Now it’s your move. Will you fall for the SSU’s feint and move forces to counter Nastasia’s bold move to the center? Or will you attack the massive Mao Zedong threatening the majority of your forces on the front lines? No matter what move you make, just remember you’re likely going to come under heavy fire from the SSU forces immediately after making your attack. Try to focus on a soft target like Grand’Ma, and attack from in cover. This way, your forces won’t be vulnerable and in the open after attacking. Always keep your mission objectives in mind; while the Mao is a tempting target, destroying it is not necessary to achieve victory. You may find it far easier to use your precious activations on lighter targets instead of spending three or four of them to take out a single enemy unit. Don’t succumb to “Shiny Target Syndrome” and waste valuable time and ammunition on the biggest and most difficult-to-destroy targets, when victory can be achieved through other means.

Victory is yours for the taking, but it is not going to be easy. You must act quickly but carefully. If you blindly rush out of cover and attack without thinking you may soon find your undead are simply dead.

Thanks, Jeremiah! Today, we’re pleased to present an overview of these versatile fighters by guest writer Jeremiah Terry.

Jeremiah Terry on the USMC Heavy Weapons Teams

The recently released USMC Heavy Weapons Teams bring a new range of tactical possibilities to Allied forces, but they also pose a new tactical challenge to veteran commanders. This is because unlike their Axis counterparts, these new Marines don’t have massive armor or the heaviest of weapons. Rather, they fulfill a truly defensive role. Such a purely defensive unit is not something we've really seen yet in Dust Tactics.

The primary advantage of these new units is that they have extremely low AP cost and great cover ability. This makes them great options for players building an army to defend an area of the map, an objective, or even an important hero. In a defensive situation, players can use the Choppers “Advanced Reactive Fire” to keep lighter units at bay, while threatening aircraft with a small amount of damage. Once placed in cover, they succeed in their cover rolls on blanks, making them extremely difficult to dislodge from any fortified position. With the ability to damage all but the heaviest units, the Choppers are incredibly cheap to field at only 13 points.

Although the Choppers are a great choice to defend a small area of the map (limited to their weapon range of 6), when you require a much greater field of fire, look no further than the Leathernecks. The Leathernecks will allow you to reach out and strike targets with their “Artillery” range 120mm Mortar. For 15 points the Leathernecks have the lowest cost artillery weapon in the game. While the 120mm Mortar is not as powerful as a vehicle-mounted artillery weapon, it can do severe damage to most infantry squads and light vehicles. By combining these Marines with a couple of units that have the “Artillery Strike” ability, the Leathernecks will allow players to provide fire support to almost any part of the map.

Boot Camp

As these new units represent almost a completely new category, they take a small change in thinking in order to get the most out of them. The first thing to remember is that these are truly dedicated defensive units. They are only partially effective if used to advance on the enemy. Both of these units have primary weapons that require “Setup.” This means they are not fully effective when moving and attacking in the same activation. As a result, you’re going to want to get them into a defensive position quickly, and only move again if you’re going to be overrun, or if the enemy is in retreat and moves out of range.

The Second point to keep in mind is that these are Dust Tactics’ first Armor 1 infantry. This means that even relatively lightly armed units such as the Recon Grenadiers could roll a maximum of thirty-two dice against them (at Range 1). Even at Range 4, the Recon Grenadiers would still roll sixteen dice, which is double what they’d roll against a “standard” Armor 2 infantry unit. It’s two and a half times more dice then they’d roll against a “heavy” Armor 3 infantry unit. For these units, staying un cover is not just a good idea, it’s a necessity – a fact made even clearer when looking at far more powerful units like the Strumkonig. This heavy walker could roll ten dice from any range, so even a single round spent out of cover could spell doom for these lightly armored units.

Training Exercise

To demonstrate the defensive power of these new units, let’s put them through their paces along with a sizable Allied infantry force, against an Axis panzer company led by Lara Walter. This will give you an opportunity to see how to best deploy these new forces and how they can be used to defeat a far more powerful force.

First, take a look at the armies that will be facing off in our hypothetical scenario. The Allied force is a light but nimble infantry force with only one light walker providing some added anti-aircraft firepower. The Axis, on the other hand, is the epitome of heavy metal, featuring 223 points of armored vehicles along with the ground pounding power of the Fledermaus IV. At first glance, some might think the Allies have little chance of survival, but careful planning and a little luck can allow them to overcome such overwhelming odds.

Allied Army/Marine Joint Task Force Points The 13th Panzer Kompany Points The Choppers 13 Lara 21 Leathernecks 15 Luther 35 13 Foxtrot 5 Luther 35 The Boss 40 Ludwig 40 The Gunners 20 Strumkonig 87 Hell Boys + The Chef 34+22 Heinrich 26 Death Dealers + Rosie 23+20 Fledermaus IV 48 BBQ Squad + The Priest 30+18 Recon Boys + Johnny One Eye 15+16 Wildfire 24 This Allied Army/Marine Joint Task Force costs 295 points, while the above 13th Panzer Company costs 292 points.
Next, have a look at the map setup. The map has a long wall with some gaps just in front of the Attacker’s deployment zone. Meanwhile, the Defender’s area consists of a number of Quonset Huts and Tank Traps. The victory conditions are as follows: The Defender must hold their ground, and they’ll win if they can eliminate the enemy forces. The Attacker must force the Allied forces to retreat or destroy them. To force a retreat, the Axis must eliminate all of the Allies’ Heroes. The Attacker will win immediately if they force the retreat, or destroy the Allied defenders.
The attacker deployment area is in red, the defender deployment area is in blue, and the cover area is in yellow. Click to enlarge.
Now, imagine that it is round two of an eight round game. Round one saw a little combat, but none of the units have suffered any damage. Many of the units on both sides have taken up good positions, but you can see the Axis force has a serious terrain disadvantage.

On the Allied side, you can see that the Choppers and Leathernecks are not only in cover, but the Leathernecks are as far to the rear of the defensive area as possible, keeping them far from the enemy, but not out of range of the Strumkonig’s massive guns. The Boss and 13 Foxtrot are also well protected, with The Boss having clear line of sight to the enemy lines. This allows them to call for artillery fire from the Leathernecks despite the Leathernecks’ lack of a line of sight to the enemy.
The attacker must navigate terrain squares, while the defender enjoys the benefit of tank traps and quonset huts. Click to enlarge.
Looking at the situation, the Allies clearly have the tactical advantage for the start of round two. They are in well defended positions. They have multiple light anti-aircraft units to cope with the threat of a small number of aircraft overhead. The Allies also have time on their side, as the Axis force will have to spend a lot of actions moving in order to get its forces into fighting positions.

That’s not to say the Axis forces are no threat. The Fledermaus, the Strumkonig, and the Ludwig are all within range or striking distance. Of those three the Fledermaus poses the most immediate threat. During its activation it will have to make a forced move that will likely bring it into range of a number of Allied units. The Ludwig and Strumkonig, while powerful, are less of a threat as they both need to begin making their way into the center of the map to clear a path for the remaining Axis units. Moving will likely take priority for at least one of them. The Ludwig is the most likely to move as its attack is less powerful.

Take Command

Now, put yourself in the Allies position. You have initiative; what will you do first? Will you call for a sustained artillery barrage from the Leathernecks on the Strumkonig? Using “All in one,” it has the potential to do 4 damage points to the mighty Schwer-Panzerkampflaufer, taking it to half health. At half health the Hell Boys will be able make short work of the massive machine. Or will you charge forward with one of your “Fast” squads? Maybe the Horton will veer off to attack a lone squad in the open giving the Choppers a chance use their “Advanced Reactive Fire.” Or the Choppers can simply wait to perform a sustained attack and begin whittling the Horton’s health down. That way, Wildfire will be able to easily finish it off.

It’s all up to you. The odds may seem overwhelming, but if you act quickly the Allies have a chance of success. However, it’s a narrow window of opportunity. If you wait too long, the Axis forces will bring more of their unlimited range firepower to bear...allowing them to focus their attacks on your heroes, who are vital to their victory.

Thanks, Jeremiah! Beneath the city of Zverograd lay ruins filled with the promise of alien technology and VK energy, and the Allies, Axis, and SSU will stop at nothing to secure the city once and for all. The Axis has a firm grip on the airfield just outside of this Soviet city. Meanwhile, Axis troops are taking cover in quonset huts and leveraging their new Horten HO-347s to defend the skies.

If the Allies have any hope of taking the city, then they must secure the airfield to utilize their massive air fleet. Operation “Icarus” brings the Allied assault to life as the airfield becomes the centerpiece of the contest for Zverograd. The Allied approach will not be easy with a distinct lack of cover on the airfield, the entrenched Axis forces, and the SSU still trying to hold the city itself.

Zverograd Beckons

Operation “Icarus” introduces new rules for minefields, the limited cover provided by the trees that line the airfield’s landing strips, and the quonset huts in which the Axis forces await the Allied assault. All these elements come together to create the dangerous new battleground that comes sharply into focus with the seven tense and ferocious scenarios of the Operation “Icarus” campaign.

Operation “Icarus” ffers a large dossier of information on the city of Zverograd, featuring an expanded look at the ravaged city that began to be revealed in Operation “Hades.” Zverograd has a number of key tactical locations, and many are connected by the very underground tunnels and metro lines that housed the claustrophobic Rattenkrieg. Operation “Icarus” brings a wealth of information to players about these various strategic locales, allowing you to build your own scenario objectives.

New Heroes Take the Field

The Axis has brought their best and brightest to bear in this struggle to hold the airfield from the Allies and the SSU. Colonel Prince von Furstenwerth, known as the “Panzerprinz,” is one of the most famous armor commanders in the Axis army. His innovative walker tactics have become the stuff of legend, earning him the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. This soldier’s tactical genius will be one of the greatest threats to the Allies’ Operation “Icarus.” The Axis soldiers will rally around their Ace Pilot and provide a wall of opposition with walkers performing at peak efficiency.

Pre-painted Premium versions of Panzerprinz (left) and Sgt. Victory (right)

In turn, the Allies will hope the stories surrounding their superhuman hero are true. They say that Sergeant Percy Washington can run faster than a horse, tear apart a Luther with his bare hands, and survive direct hits from enemy bullets. With his telekinetic strength, remarkable speed, and uncanny resistance to kinetic weapons, “Sgt. Victory” may provide the Allies just the edge they need to turn the tide of their battle for Zverograd.

Dust Tactics Premium Edition

Operation “Icarus” is also available from FFG’s Dust Tactics Premium Edition line. The Premium Edition of Operation “Icarus” features detailed and professionally painted versions of Sgt. Victory and the Panzerprinz. Each one is painted according to the art direction of Vincent Fontaine from Dust Studio. From the highlights that call out the expressions on their faces to the polish of their boots, each of these Premium heroes is a stunning and stylish addition to any army.

The SSU and Axis forces have closed off the other points of entry to Zverograd. Now, as the world’s greatest militaries battle for control of the crumbling city and the skies above it, the Allies risk everything to establish a greater foothold and a base of operations for their future air strikes.

It’s an all-out offensive fought in the open, and there’s no time to spare. Get ready for fast and furious combats as the Allies seek to seize Zverograd’s airfield in Operation “Icarus”!

Three new units are now available for Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare at your local retailer and online through our webstore!

The game’s most recent campaign expansion, Operation “Icarus,” has drawn Axis and Allied forces into new heated conflicts as they battle for control of Zverograd’s airfield and the air superiority to which it may lead. Though the Axis forces holding the airfield were initially able to hunker down in their Quonset Huts, desperate and determined strikes by the Allies eventually wore through the Axis defenses, and the Allies seized command of key locations along the edges of the airfield. Now, with the SSU’s forces pressing in around them, neither side can afford to waste any time, and both send in new troops, hoping to strike the decisive blow.

Turn the tide of battle with the Allied USMC Heavy Weapons Teams, Axis Übertoten Suicide Squad, and Axis Übertoten Assault Squad!

USMC Heavy Weapons Teams

As the Allied invaders gain a greater foothold on the battlefield, they seek to reinforce their positions with their USMC Heavy Weapons Teams.

The USMC Heavy Weapons Teams expansion comes with two units. Both have learned the hard way that heavy firepower is a crucial component along the path to victory.

Serving primarily as a defensive unit, the Choppers wield a deadly .50 cal machine gun which they combine with their Advanced Reactive Fire to reliably fire upon enemy units before they close into position. Set them up in cover, and they excel at wreaking havoc upon enemy infantry.

The Leathernecks have traded their .50 cal. for a 120mm heavy mortar, one of the most reliable weapons you can find for harsh environments. The mortar never jams, is easy to clean, and its 120mm shells can even punch through the hulls of vehicles and walkers!

Übertoten Suicide Squad

To hold their early gains in the battle for Zverograd’s airfield, the Allies quickly established defensive lines. When the first attempts by Axis forces to break the lines were repelled, Axis commanders realized they needed to throw troops against the Allies who they could count to be loyal to the cause beyond all fear for life and limb.

Enter the Übertoten Suicide Squad. These sentient undead soldiers were created by injecting the Wiederbelebungsserum into live subjects rather than corpses. The process grants the soldiers tremendous physical gifts, but for some, the burden of their abominable un-life proves too great to bear. Those souls looking for death’s release volunteer for the Übertoten Suicide Squad.

Armed to the teeth with Magnetic Mines and Panzerfaust 100s, these troops have less than no regard for their safety, as they try to blow up themselves with their targets. A terrifying and effective presence on the field of battle, the Übertoten Suicide Squad excels at breaking enemy lines and can provide an excellent anti-tank measure to any Axis army.

Übertoten Assault Squad

While the soldiers of the Übertoten Suicide Squad have responded negatively to the Axis scientists’ experiments with their Wiederbelebungsserum, the sentient undead of the Übertoten Assault Squad stand as tribute to their more successful efforts.

Nicknamed the Braineaters, these newly augmented troops have been equipped with some powerful weaponry, including the new MG 48 and Panzerfaust 100. The MG 48 can liquidate enemy infantry in an incredible barrage of bullets, and the Panzerfaust 100 is a particularly potent antitank weapon. With their augmented, undead bodies and powerful equipment, these abominations change the course of battles wherever they are deployed.

Premium Pre-Painted Versions

If you want to bring your units to the field pre-painted and battle ready, then pick up our professionally painted versions of these units from our line of Dust Premium-Edition Miniatures. Each Dust Premium unit is professionally painted according to the art schemes of Vincent Fontaine, the art director of Dust Studio.

Whether you pick up the detailed, pre-painted models on our webstore or give the standard versions your own paint-job, the USMC Heavy Weapons Teams, Übertoten Suicide Squad, and Übertoten Assault Squad are all now available at your local retailer!

Lead developer Zach Tewalthomas and the rest of the Dust Tactics team have been hard at work on both of these documents, and Zach took some time to talk about both of these important pieces of intel.

A Word from the Developer

Hello Dust Tactics fans! It's time for another FAQ update. In this document, we answer rules questions about aircraft, dim light, and underground combat. We’ll also shed light on skills like Tank Riders and Take Aim, take a closer look at the USMC Mortar Team and the Fireball, and much more! The biggest addition to the FAQ is an entire section that breaks down rules for units that take up two spaces on the battlefield. We go into detail concerning legal movements, entering the battlefield, unit targeting, and the ways to change a two-spacer's orientation during the game. This is the most comprehensive FAQ to date, and it will surely come in handy when times get tough on the battlefield. Download it today from the Dust Tactics support page.

2013 introduces some exciting changes for Dust Tactics tournament play. The highly successful format used for last year's National and World Championship tournaments have been applied to this year's official Dust Tactics Tournament Rules, allowing for a more balanced and evenly matched tournament structure. Board setup and objectives are no longer scenario-based, but are determined by the players themselves. Before play begins, players vie for optimal battlefield conditions, using the contents of a Dust Tactics Terrain Tile Set to create games that are truly unique. For those of you who are already accustomed to the tourney rules used in last year's championships, there are a couple of changes. A tournament board may now include a tile with triangle (water) squares, and there is an entirely new scenario option available for games in which one of these tiles has been placed!

It's an exciting time for Dust Tactics. With Operation “Icarus” on the horizon, the skies above Zverograd are anything but safe, and the ground is littered with fallen soldiers and scraps of defeated walkers. The Axis is deploying their new VK powered jet, the Horten HO-347, in an effort to secure their hold on the Zverograd airfield. The SSU is trying to make the most of the VK stored in the walkers of fallen friends with the KV47 Recovery & Demolition Walkers. The Axis has stationed their troops in the relative cover and security of quonset huts positioned on the airfield, and the Allies and SSU will have a difficult time digging them out of their position.

Horten HO-347

The Axis was the first to introduce jets to the battlefield, and the addition of new, VK-powered engines have made their fast and versatile fighters all the more fearsome. The Axis’ latest foray into the creation of these powerful aircraft is the Horten HO-347.
The two Horten HO-347 configurations, the Fledermaus IV (right) and the Fledermaus III (left)
The Fledermaus III variation of this plane is a sure bet when facing enemy aircraft with its light cannons, and its larger 75mm gun can thin ranks on the ground in no time. The Fledermaus IV swaps out the 75mm cannon for an array of bombs. This configuration is perfect for pilots who want to get up close and personal as they clear the area for infantry and walkers. Both of these configurations are fast and pack an incredible punch, and both will undoubtedly contribute to the Axis’ superiority in the air.

KV-47 Recovery & Demolition Walker

The SSU has been making the most of their limited resources for a long time. Before the SSU introduced VK-powered units to their armies, it was not a priority to recover vehicles that had been wrecked during heavy combat. With the advent of VK-powered walkers, the SSU has become far more proactive in recovering downed units from the battlefield.

Even when they were no longer functional, VK-powered walkers contained rare materials and technology that was vital to SSU army. If recovery of these valuable materials was impossible, then troops had a standing order to destroy the wreckage to keep the valuable scrap and SSU secrets out of the hands of Soviet enemies.

In the midst of battle, recovering the remains of vehicles that no doubt were felled under heavy enemy fire is no easy task. This process was deemed too dangerous and the scrap too cumbersome for infantry to manage, so a new line of KV47 walkers was produced with these recovery missions in mind. Four configurations of the KV47 Recovery & Demolition Walker were made available to be deployed on the field of battle: Maksim, Marlen, Melor, and Mikhail.

Each walker is outfitted with the equipment it needs to recover the remains of any downed allies. The different configurations are retrofitted with weaponry that has been salvaged and re-appropriated for these particular units, allowing them to stave off the enemy as they extract what scraps remain of their fallen comrades.

Airfield Accessory Pack

The airfield outside of Zverograd is a wide open expanse of land, making cover extremely hard to come by for the Axis troops who are trying to hold this valuable military target. Quonset huts are easy to erect and provide protection from the elements and enemies alike. A cluster of these huts in an open area like the Zverograd airfield can make all the difference for Axis troops.

Operation “Icarus” includes four quonset hut sections, and the Airfield Accessory Pack brings six more sections to your battles on the airfield. More huts mean greater protection from enemy assault, and more options for creating strategic arrangements of cover.

Whether you pick up the detailed, pre-painted models on our webstore or give the standard versions your own paint-job, the KV47 Recovery & Demolition Walker, Horten HO-347, and the Airfield Accessory Pack are all now available at your local retailer!

Now, the Axis is getting close to fielding its new Horten HO-347 jets over the skies of Zverograd, and guest writer Jeremiah Terry has taken the time to explore the potential of these speedy new aircraft.

Speed is Victory…

When the Horten HO-347 was conceived, one premise was held above all others: Speed is victory. The HO-347 is the fastest unit ever to appear on the battlefields of Dust Tactics. With its movement value of three and the ability to fly over any type of terrain, the ‘347 can cover the width of the average Dust Tactics board (twelve squares) in only two turns. However, this huge speed advantage does not come without its drawbacks, and the HO-347 may not be what some expect.

The Fledermaus III and IV are fantastic close air-support aircraft, packing as much punch as some tanks. With their massive speed advantage these planes are able to sweep across the battlefield and take out ground forces with ease. However, despite each having the “Air Superiority” skill, they are not a superior force in a dogfight. In air to air combat, either of the Fledermaus variants have only as much firepower as the SSU’s lowly Mil MI-45 Transport Helicopter. This means that while a Fledermaus can threaten ground forces and provide some anti-air support, it should avoid going nose to nose with the SSU’s most powerful anti-air gunship, the Striker. The Striker can easily take out a '347 in a single Sustained Attack, while the '347 will only ever be able to severely damage one of the SSU’s choppers in one round of fire.

This singular limitation of the HO-347s makes the task of planning a force around them a somewhat difficult job, especially when facing enemy air power. It pays to think hard about air combat before settling on a force. While the Fledermaus III and IV may need some extra anti-air support, using ground-based vehicles such as Heinrich or the massive Strumkonig could be an ineffective strategy. These vehicles will certainly get the job done in terms of firepower when combined with the HO-347, but they are far too slow to keep up with the lightning fast ‘347. Without having a comparable move value, these walkers will simply hold the ‘347 back, and the Fledermaus will lose its primary advantage: speed.

One option is to use the Axis’ fantastic class three armor infantry. These smaller units can move into spaces where larger vehicles cannot. When paired with Lara, they gain the “Assault” ability, allowing them to catch up with the speedy Fledermäusen. There are a few Axis class three armor squads that could provide the necessary anti-air support, but your best choice will likely be the Heavy Flak Grenadiers. While the Grenadiers’ weapons will need to be reloaded every so often, their burst fire can take down a helicopter with ease.
Axis Armored Infantry Company with Light Air Support Unit Point Cost Fledermaus IV 48 Lara + Heavy Flak Grenadiers 21 + 25 Heavy Laser Grenadiers 30 Laser Jagdgrenadiere 28 Jagdgrenadiere 25 Heinrich 26 Ludwig 40 Lothar 36 Beobachter + Manfred 5 + 16 Total 300
In the force listed above you’ll have a lot of anti-armor, and anti-air, firepower. This army build should allow you to deal with all but the most entrenched infantry forces. Lara, the Flak Grenadiers, and Heinrich will all provide some anti-air cover for not only the Fledermaus IV but also for any other infantry and armored vehicles not outfitted for such a role. If this force is properly positioned, most enemy aircraft should find it hard to intercept your Fledermaus when faced with so much anti-air artillery. Additionally, the Fledermaus IV’s 150 Kg bombs can tear through infantry and armor alike, easily cutting a swath of destruction through the enemy’s lines.

And Victory is Life

Another option is to pair up two HO-347s, allowing them to provide their own covering fire. This is also a very tempting idea because of the HO-347’s low point cost of forty-five to forty-eight points when compared to the sixty-two to sixty-nine points that it costs to field the SSU’s Ground Attack Helicopters.
Axis Blitzkrieg Force with Air Support Unit Point Cost Fledermaus IV 48 Fledermaus III 43 Lara + Heavy Flak Grenadiers 21 + 25 Heavy Laser Grenadiers 30 Laser Jagdgrenadiere 28 Ludwig 40 Lothar 36 Beobachter + Manfred 5 + 16 Total 292
Here’s a force that has a lot of tactical options. The speed and “Advanced Deployment” capabilities of the powerful Fledermaus III and IV allow them to strike deep into enemy lines, and the mass of heavy infantry can take out enemy walkers and tanks. Additionally, these ground units will provide the Fledermäusen with some added protection from enemy aircraft. True heavy support is provided by a Ludwig, a walker which no Axis commander should ever be without, and a Lothar. The Lothar combined with the Beobachter will be able to strike enemies virtually anywhere on the board, and Manfred provides the Beobachter team with some much needed protection.

This army also features the added firepower of the Fledermaus III’s 75mm heavy anti-tank gun. While this gun isn’t terribly effective against infantry, and is useless against enemy aircraft, it can tear a tank apart. The 75mm allows a player to roll nearly as many dice against all armor classes as Ludwig’s 88cm does. The Fledermaus III can do even more damage against light and medium armor when it combines its 75mm gun with its Vier 20mm cannons. This allows the Fledermaus III to roll two more dice then a Ludwig against armor class three and four ground vehicles. With the HO-347’s speed and the innate benefits of being an aircraft, the three extra points you’ll pay for a Fledermaus when compared to a Ludwig make it seem quite the bargain. Just remember that if you’re facing down super heavy enemy armor, the Ludwig will still be the better option for the point cost.

As you can see, the new Axis Horten HO-347 is quite versatile, and it can easily break an unprepared enemy. With all the factions soon to be fighting over the skies of Zverograd, no commander should be enter the battlefield without some form of anti-air artillery, or air support.

Take the Skies for the Axis

Special thanks to Jeremiah Terry for his intriguing insights into creative ways to make the most of these new Axis jets. The HO-347 will be available next week, so make sure to visit your local retailer and add these troops to the skies above Zverograd in Dust Tactics!

The siege of Zverograd continues, and the three factions are all trying to secure this vital military target. The Allies currently possess the most powerful air force on the planet, but the Axis is in control of the airfield in Soviet Zverograd. The helicopters of the SSU and the new Axis jets are beginning to close the gap in control of the skies. In order for the Allies to secure their dominance in the air, they must launch a major offensive to take control of the airfield.

Prepare for an Aerial Assault

The Allies will have to take care as they plan their approach. New rules are introduced for taking some limited cover in the few trees that line the strip, deadly and explosive minefields create an added obstacle to tactics on the ground, and the Axis’ infantry can take shelter from the Allied barrage in quonset huts. These hazards and havens will be vital to the Allied assault and will be just as crucial for any Axis or SSU defense plan.

A large array of new skills are introduced in Operation “Icarus,” offering a whole host of news ways to gain a tactical edge. A good general knows the strengths of the units he commands, so to make the best use of all these new abilities, begin planning now.

More Realism in Your Dogfights

If you hunger for a more realistic representation of airborne combat, new Optional Advanced Flying Rules (pdf, 1.5 MB) are also now available on our Dust Tactics support page. A tank was obliterated, but there was movement in the rubble. An Axis zombie, eyes alive with malevolent purpose, clawed its way out of the debris, snarled something in German, and rushed the SSU platform with a mine clutched to its chest. Another deafening boom sounded, and the Ubertoten was knocked to the ground, its mine detonating in a blinding flash as an Allied bomber veered away from SSU gunfire. Ivar and Emil sat in stunned silence for a moment, then quickly snapped into action when the radio crackled to life with new target coordinates.

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announced three new units for Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare! The three factions are each bringing something new to the battlefield. Zverograd is still a hotly contested military target, and each army is looking to find an advantage. The Allies want to secure their supremacy in the air, the Axis is fielding more Ubertoten, and the innovative SSU continue to find new ways to leverage their limited resources.

The Allies Rule the Skies

The Allies have the largest air fleet of all the factions, though they have recently been given a tough time by the Axis’ jets. The Allies have been hard at work developing a means to meet this new threat: the P-48. The P-48 Pelican is capable of taking off with a very short runway, making this light and versatile fighter very quick to deploy on any new battlefield. The Pelican is equipped with Triple Dual .50 cal machine guns that give it a serious edge against enemies in the air and quickly eats through infantry.

The P-48C Pelican configuration known as Diving Dotty

The Pelican was first put to work as a dive bomber in its P-48C configuration, affectionately known to the Allies as “Diving Dotty.” The P-48C is capable of providing great ground support against infantry while fending off enemy fliers with its heavy machine guns alone. Diving Dotty really shines when it leverages its powerful 500 kg bombs, which can wipe out tanks and troops alike in a fiery explosion. Daredevil pilots dive as low as possible for extra accuracy in using these devastating explosives.

Bellowing Bertie, the P-48X Pelican configuration

In contrast to the P-48C, the P-48X, or “Bellowing Bertie,” prefers to deal death from a distance. Bellowing Bertie makes use of the same heavy machine guns as its predecessor, but is equipped with powerful Ground Rockets that let it strike from a longer range than Diving Dotty. These devastating rockets are a reliable and powerful way to clear a path for any Allied ground forces needing to cut through enemy tanks and troops.

Either of these Pelican configurations are sure to add a great deal of firepower to your airborne Allied forces.

Seeking a Second Death

The Axis has recently deployed their powerful undead Ubertoten on the field of battle. These sentient undead soldiers were created by injecting the Wiederbelebungsserum into live subjects rather than corpses. While this process grants the soldiers greater physical gifts, some soldiers have found the burden of their abominable un-life too great to bear. These souls looking for death’s release volunteer for the Ubertoten Suicide Squad.

The explosive Ubertoten Suicide Squad

The Ubertoten Suicide Squad is armed to the teeth with Magnetic Mines designed to do damage to tanks at close range. They also wield Panzerfaust 100s which they use to soften their targets before charging in to detonate their mines. These troops have less than no regard for their safety, as they try to blow up themselves with their targets. The Ubertoten Suicide Squad are a terrifying and effective presence on the field of battle, and will work as an excellent anti-tank measure in your Axis army.

Cheap and Effective are a Great Combo

The SSU is always working to find ways to support their tremendously effective infantry with more firepower. The BR 47 Self-Propelled Weapon Platform has proven an inexpensive and potent method for bringing some anti-tank weapons to the battlefield. This light vehicle evolved from little more than a farm machine into a staple of the SSU forces.

The Red Fury version of the Self-Propelled Weapon Platform

The BR 47-100 Self-Propelled Weapon Platform configuration, known as the "Red Fury," is wielding a massive 100 mm M1946. This gun is capable of dealing damage to even the heaviest tanks and hardiest infantry. A few BR 47-100s can hold the line against much more powerful targets, dealing effective damage while the enemy attempts to close the distance.

The Red Rain configuration of the Self-Propelled Weapon Platform

If your SSU forces have another method of holding the line and a team of Observers in the field, then the BR 47-200 Self-Propelled Weapon Platform brings a cheap and effective artillery weapon to the field. Known as the "Red Rain," this vehicle carries a 200 mm Heavy Mortar. The cost-effective Red Rain can sit comfortably behind enemy lines and strike a spotter’s targets with deadly effect without ever getting in the line of fire.

Pre-Painted Premium Miniatures for all Three Factions

Each faction is bringing a variety of new forces to the field, and FFG also offers Dust Premium Edition pre-painted models for each of these units’ configurations. Get Diving Dotty in that beautiful shade of blue, see the Red Rain in vivid detail, or bring painstaking painted suicidal Ubertoten to the field. Each of our Dust Premium Edition figures is painted according to the detailed art schemes developed by Vincent Fontaine, the art director of Dust Studio.

Each of these units brings something interesting to the struggle for dominance in Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare, so plan to pick up your favorite faction’s reinforcements in the near future!

Zverograd is currently the central target of this conflict, and the SSU have brought new units and a new walker to aid in the defense of the city. The Axis bring a new walker to the battlefield specifically designed to flood the city with troops. The Allies will have their work cut out for them as these new units for the SSU and the Axis are now available at your local retailer and our webstore!

Dealing Death from Afar

The SSU Specialists features two units adept at bringing long-range destruction down on the enemies of the SSU: the SSU Sniper Team and the SSU Observer Team. The SSU is leveraging their highly skilled snipers on the battlefield to greater effect by sending them in pairs, rather than deploying a lone sniper with a spotter. The twin firepower of the SSU Sniper Team can even put a dent in enemy walkers.

The SSU Observer Team (left) and the SSU Sniper Team (right)

The SSU Observer Team is not as heavily armed, but they give eyes to the SSU artillery strikes, making them an extremely valuable asset on the battlefield. Often underestimated because they don’t post an obvious threat, this pair of stalwart soldiers may be the deciding factor once they get the enemy in their sights.

Powerful Walkers for the SSU

The SSU has re-engineered the chassis of a captured Axis Luther into the devastating KV-3 Heavy Walker. This heavily armed walker can be utilized in either the Babushka or Matrioshka configurations, each offering a different focus for its potent firepower.

The Matrioshka (left) and Babushka (right) configurations of the KV-3 Heavy Walker

The KV-3 K, or Matrioshka, is armed with devastating dual 152mm ML20-S guns. These twin cannons are designed to obliterate enemy armor, and make the Matrioshka an incredible anti-tank vehicle. The KV-3 M, or Babushka, is equipped with dual Maxim Gatling Guns, which don’t pack quite as much punch when it comes to tanks, but they will clear the battlefield of infantry with deadly efficiency.

These two configurations make the KV-3 Heavy Walker a force to be feared in any confrontation.

Carrying the Weight of Command

The heavily armored and armed infantry of the Axis forces are an incredibly valuable asset, and the Axis Armored Transport has been designed to make these soldiers more mobile and even better protected from enemy fire. Axis engineers have developed two primary configurations for the Armored Transport, each of which features Advanced Reactive Fire, Carry Capacity: 6, and six hit points to keep troops out of harm’s way.

The Prinzluther not only carries your troops safely through enemy fire, but is also the very first vehicle to make use of the Command Vehicle skill. Any unit in the vehicle that possesses the Command Squad skill can use the walker’s extensive array of radio equipment to keep in contact with the field. These units can issue orders from within the armor plated walls of the Prinzluther, and, once per turn, they can reroll any failed die results to get an extra try at using one of their special abilities.

The Prinzluther (left) and Sturmprinz (right) configurations of the Axis Heavy Transport

While the Command Vehicle ability is incredibly useful for some squads, there are times when you just need more guns on the ground than the Prinzluther offers. The Sturmprinz is the second configuration of the Axis Armored Transport, and it boasts the same Carry Capacity as the Prinzluther, but can also take on an additional six Tank Riders. While the soldiers riding outside the tank don’t benefit from its protection, they can defend the tank with their own weapons. The Sturmprinz also boasts bigger guns, so it walks the battlefield brimming with troops and bristling with firepower.

Premium Pre-Painted Miniatures Are Ready for Battle

All of these powerful units are also available in professionally pre-painted Dust Tactics Premium Edition versions. These highly detailed miniatures bring the battle to life with their art scheme directed by Vincent Fontaine, master painter and Art Director of Dust Studio.

These units are all now available to bring to your SSU and Axis armies. Whether you want to customize your own troops and walkers, or you choose to pick up the pre-painted Premium Edition versions, these powerful pieces will add serious strategic options and firepower to your games of Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare!

The year is 1947, and World War II still rages. The discovery of alien VK-driven technology has changed the course of the war. Massive combat walkers stride the battlefields supported by troops with laser cannons and phasers. Scientific experiments have unlocked superhuman powers in a handful of soldiers and promoted the development of super-intelligent Axis gorillas. As Axis and Allied battle for control of the world’s VK reserves, their deployment to the war-torn city of Zverograd has prompted the mighty SSU to retaliate!

The 2012 FFG World Championship Weekend saw ferocious battles in the world of Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare, waged between all three of the games’ military blocs. Heavy walkers gunned down scouts and commanders. Gorillas and zombies raced across the battlefield. Phaser cannons scorched walkers and troops like, leaving the burnt scent of ionized atmosphere in the air. When the last shots had been fired and the dust settled, two champions emerged, the winners of our Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare World Championship Tournaments.

Today, we celebrate these champions in the Hall of Heroes.

We induct 2012 Dust Warfare World Champion – Julian McPherson.

We add more laurels to the Hall’s entry for 2012 Dust Tactics World Champion – Louis Gentile.

2012 Dust Warfare World Champion – Julian McPherson

Julian McPherson has been an avid miniatures gamer and painter since the age of 13. He started playing Dust Warfare upon the game’s release and quickly built on the success he had enjoyed in other miniature games.

At the 2012 FFG World Championship Weekend, Julian McPherson conquered the field with his high-powered Allied army to win the inaugural Dust Warfare World Championship.

2012 Dust Tactics World Champion – Louis Gentile

As the 2011 Dust Tactics World Championship Runner-Up and the 2012 Dust Warfare North American Champion, Louis Gentile quickly established himself as one of the greatest generals in the alternate 1940s reality world of Dust Tactics.

During the 2012 FFG World Championship Weekend, Louis took the final steps to assert his command over the battlefield by winning third place in Dust Warfare and taking home the title of 2012 Dust Tactics World Champion.

Dust Tactics World Champion – 2012

Dust Warfare World Championship, 3rd – 2012

Louis Gentile plans a strike during the 2012 Dust Tactics World Championship finals.

You can learn more about Louis Gentile at his place of honor in the Hall of Heroes.

To the Victor Go the Spoils

What’s better than annihilating your foes and earning your induction to the Hall of Heroes?

As the World Champions for Dust Warfare and Dust Tactics, both Julian McPherson and Louis Gentile earned the opportunity to work with Paolo Parente and the developers to design a miniature for the game. Furthermore, Paolo Parente and Vincent Fontaine will provide them each with a custom, painted, one-of-a-kind version of the miniature he designs.

Congratulations to both Julian McPherson and Louis Gentile, our 2012 Dust Warfare and Dust Tactics World Champions!

Each configuration of this powerful airborne threat has something unique to leverage on the battlefield. Today, Dust Tactics enthusiast and guest writer Jeremiah Terry discusses just how best to go about owning the air with this powerful new unit.

Death from Above

After the launch of the SSU faction earlier this year, Dust Tactics got its first taste of air power with the SSU Airborne Transport. Although the transport was the first Dust Tactics aircraft, it wasn’t exactly a tank killer. Now, after much anticipation, the SSU receives some real air power with the SSU Ground Attack Helicopter. This impressive gunship comes with four weapon packs and the accompanying stat cards for each configuration. For most folks, the first choice in SSU air power is going to be the Airblaster with its massive anti-tank abilities. The Airblaster can damage just about any piece of armor it encounters, and it can take out most light and medium vehicles single handedly. In addition to its anti-tank capabilities, the Airblaster’s standard Quad DshK 12.7mm machine guns make it an effective anti-air weapon.

Obviously, with all of this versatility, the Airblaster is going to become the centerpiece of many SSU armies. Despite its strengths, the Airblaster does have some limitations. Both of the Airblaster’s primary weapons are limited to only two uses. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. This means that you may want to provide the Airblaster with some backup that won’t run out of ammo. This backup can come in the form of ground-based forces like infantry, some KV-47s, or even a massive tank like the Lenin, but none of these are going to fast enough to keep up with the flying Airblaster. It may be a good idea to pair up the Airblaster with one of its whirlybird brethren. The Striker can provide cover fire to keep enemy infantry and light vehicles at bay. Striker is also an excellent anti-air weapon as its Air Superiority ability makes all attacks against enemy aircraft function as if they were Sustained Attacks.
SSU Airborne Strike Force Unit Point Cost Airblaster 69 Striker 62 SSU Airborne Transport 40 Red Yana + The Trediakovsky + Frontoviki 20 + 7+ 19 SSU Walker Transport 40 Nina 34 Total 291
This force is very small and has very little in the way of ground forces, but the ground units it does possess can be loaded into aircraft and moved about the board very quickly. This army’s primary firepower comes from its attack helicopters, Airblaster and Striker. As there are still 9 points remaining, you could use any combo of choppers, even two Airblasters.

   The Death Rain
Bring the Rain…

If a small mobile force doesn’t suit your needs, then maybe the Death Rain will be more to your liking. Death Rain is slightly less expensive, and, while it does have some of the same limitations as the Airblaster, it has very well balanced abilities overall, making it effective against infantry, armor, and opposing aircraft. The Death Rain is best thought of as a flying tank filling the role of a couple KV-47s, except it can cross the battlefield in half the time.
                            SSU Mechanized Infantry Company Unit Point Cost Death Rain 64 Kosha + Grand'Ma 18 + 36 The Frontoviki + The Trediakovsky 19 + 7 Ohotniki + The Fonvizin 22 + 9 The Medvedi + The Karamzin 44 + 7 Natasha 32 Fakyeli + The Sumarokov 28 + 5 Total 291
As you can see this army costs exactly the same as the previous force, but has nearly twice the number of units. This army is far more suited to holding a lot of ground or defending a wide front. The previous force was much better suited to striking fast and deep, splitting the enemy forces and allowing you to take out isolated units.
The Airblaster
…and the Fire

The last of the four SSU Ground Attack Helicopter configurations is the Burner. Burner carries a mix of the weapons from the Airblaster and Striker, sporting the powerful rocket pods and the devastating anti-infantry napalm bombs. Burner, much like Death Rain, is going to be a great close infantry support weapon, and will pair well with the KV-47s armed for close combat.
                            SSU Mechanized Close Combat Company Unit Point Cost Burner 64 Yakov + Fakyeli + The Sumarokov 30 + 5 + 28 SSU Airborne Transport 40 Natalya 30 Nadya 30 Ohotniki + The Trediakovsky 22 + 7 Frontoviki + The Fronivzin 19 + 9 Jnetzi 12 Total 296
In this last army you have lots of flame weapons and Natalya’s chainsaws. What can’t be burned can be cut to ribbons. With Burner, you can unleash an assault on medium armor units from a bit of distance. This can soften up the enemy before you move in with your close combat units. Don’t count Burner out after it expends its limited ammo, it will still be able to provide close air support with its DshK 12.7mm machine guns.

These are just a few of the options you’ll have with the new SSU Ground Attack Helicopter. While it has a pretty steep point cost, its speed and versatility make it a great centerpiece for almost any SSU force.

Control the Air

Special thanks to Jeremiah Terry for his insights on some effective ways to utilize each of the four configurations of the SSU Ground Attack Helicopter. The SSU Ground Attack Helicopter is on sale now, so make sure to visit your local retailer and add this heavy-hitting flier to your SSU forces in Dust Tactics!

The SSU have powerful new infantry in the form of the Red Guards Assault Squad, and their Heavy Tesla Gun enters the fray on the IS-48 Super Heavy Tank. Meanwhile, the Axis is leveraging some hard hitting infantry in the form of the Heavy Antitank Grenadiers, and the Allies are bringing some grave threats to their opponents’ infantry by introducing the British Commandos Kill Squad.

IS-48 Super Heavy Tank

The two IS-48 configurations: Lavrentiy Beria (left) and Karl Marx (right)

In its Karl Marx configuration, the IS-48 Super Heavy Tank is armed with a Heavy Tesla Gun, making this tank is a dire threat to infantry and vehicle units alike. Designed by the SSU, the tank’s deadly Tesla cannon ignores cover, has a chance of wiping out enemy squads in a single burst, and “explodes” for tremendous damage against enemy vehicles.

The Lavrentiy Beria is the second configuration of the IS-48 Super-Heavy Tank, and, though it doesn’t come equipped with the Heavy Tesla Gun, it packs a mean punch against smaller tanks and all infantry with its ATO-45 flame weapon. The Lavrentiy Beria also punches through even the heaviest armor at any range with its 152mm ML-20S Gun.

Red Guards Assault Squad

The core of the SSU’s famous Red Guards Infantry Regiments, the Red Guards Assault Squad consists of some of the best soldiers on the planet. Joining a unit of the Red Guards is an honor for any SSU soldier; it means that he has made it through the selection process and survived one of the world’s toughest training programs.

The Red Guards Assault Squad are armed to the teeth with their PPSh-48, DPM MG, UGLs, and Molotov cocktails, these troops are capable of dealing critical damage to unwary foes.

Heavy Antitank Grenadiers

Both configurations of the Axis’ Heavy Antitank Grenadiers share a single base and come with a special card with three health boxes, like on a hero card. The more traditional Jagdgrenadiere unit brings a devastating Caseless PaK 7.5 cm gun, specifically designed to cut through tank armor. Though bullets are dependable, laser technology can cut down foes with incredible speed, and the Laser-Jagdgrenadiere tout the powerful Laser Kanone for the express purpose of slicing through heavy armor.

British Commandos Kill Squad

The British Commandos Kill Squad (left) and the French Foreign Legion Kill Squad (right)

The Allies British Commandos Kill Squad provides players with three carefully sculpted miniatures that they can configure as either a British Commandos Kill Squad or a French Foreign Legion Kill Squad. Either of these Allied Kill Squads can rain death upon enemy infantry with 50W Phaser Rifles. The British Commandos back up their firepower with the Scout skill while the French Foreign Legion Kill Squad can use its Assault skill to execute a vital tactical maneuver once per game.

Pre-Painted Minis are Ready for Action

As always, FFG is proud to also offer Dust Tactics Premium Editions of each of these units. The Premium Edition models of these tanks and troops are professionally painted to reflect the intention of Vincent Fontaine, master painter and Dust Studio’s Art Director.

Each of these new units brings tactical advantages and some real power to the battlefield for both Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare, so stop by your local retailer to add these units to your battle plans today!

In August, we announced the upcoming Heavy Antitank Grenadiers for the Axis forces. These heavily armed and armored units are able to be deployed with incredible speed and can leverage a great deal of damage to those who would stand against the Axis. Next week, these formidable forces will go on sale, and today Dust Tactics enthusiast and guest writer Jeremiah Terry discusses some interesting and innovative ways to get the most out of these heavy hitters.

Heavy Metal and Heavy Weapons…

The Axis forces of Dust Tactics are the first to receive a new type of unit made up of three men on a single base. Having troops in this configuration gives you some of the advantages of a hero character, while still maintaining the lower point cost and cover options of a standard unit. These new units provide an array of new tactical options for Axis players as they possess good anti armor ability for nearly half the cost of a larger armored walker like the Wotan.

A Burning Light

The Laser-Jagdgrenadiere are armed with the massive Laser Kanone which deals as much as six damage per roll. As with all laser weapons, when you have a successful roll, you can keep rerolling that die for extra damage, giving this unit the chance to bring down even the most heavily armored vehicles. This makes the Laser-Jagdgrenadiere an excellent choice to build a laser army around. Below is an example of a laser based army that can take down even the heaviest enemy armor. This build also has enough anti-air support to hold its own against even the most diverse Allied or SSU forces.

The above table is an example of how a nearly all laser army can be constructed. This team has massive firepower, and the addition of a couple of anti-air units means those pesky SSU copters will be held at bay. The only thing sacrificed is an unlimited range weapon. If that’s really an issue for your play style, you can try a setup like this:

            The Laser Korps

This army gives up a little bit of anti-air power that was gained by including Lara, but adds a Ludwig and the heavy artillery firepower of Lothar.

Hot Lead and Cold Steel

If lasers aren’t your cup of tea you’ll find the more traditionally armed Jagdgrenadiere just as impressive, and slightly cheaper. These soldier 3 armor units are very similar to their laser-armed compatriots, but are equipped with a 7.5cm Caseless PAK gun. This weapon sports not only as much firepower as some tanks, but also has an unlimited range. Their range and power makes them an ideal addition to almost any army, and are also a great compliment to the Axis’ existing heavy infantry. An army like the one below will be tough for any enemy to take on, having nearly all soldier 3 armor units:

            Axis Heavy Infantry Battalion

            30

            Heavy Recon Grenadiers
            26

            Ludwig
            40

            Jagdgrenadiere
            25

While an army like the one above is a bit on the small side if you look at the raw numbers, it has the advantage of having all “Damage Resilient” troops. This means that, although they are fewer in numbers, these units should be able to last longer in the fight than their more numerous but more lightly armored counterparts. Being soldier 3 units, they are nearly impervious to some of the lighter infantry weapons that only roll 1/1 against them.

In the above army, the massive Strumkonig provides a great deal of anti-air support. If you know you won’t be facing off against any enemy airpower, you can free up 87 points for more infantry or lighter walkers. In the army list below, the Strumkonig has been dropped in favor of more infantry:

As you can see from just these four army lists these two new units can make a great addition to a variety of Axis forces. The possibilities when building your army are nearly endless and these are just a few examples.

Bring These Troops to Battle Soon

Special thanks to Jeremiah Terry for his insights on some innovative ways to utilize these powerful Axis units. The Heavy Antitank Grenadiers go on sale next week, so make sure to visit your local retailer and add these troops to the battlefield in Dust Tactics! Look for these great units to go on sale next week!
